GIS Hardware and Software

Hi,

may I ask members of the group to guide me on the most viable solution to
set up a monitoring system using GIS. We are starting up a farmer income
support project in northern Mozambique helping farmers to access markets -
agribusiness. We need to map out areas where we are working with farmers,
mapping of tree cutting areas of disease affected coconut trees.

This is a new project and we need to buy all software and hardware
components (computers, laptops, GP's), anybody who can advise?

Thanks

Dear Peter,

Your project is based on temporal data: satellite images with reasonable accuracy for your application and crop recognition on frequent basis, and other data from field such as GPS.

I suggest to focus on data acquisition which is expensive and most important. Hardware is not an issue, as the cost is decreasing. I know that many will not go for my opinion for open source and free GIS software, but do not invest too much in commercial GIS software, and you have to know that your staff will spend the same energy in learning commercial or open source software.

I wish you success, it is not easy to have a working GIS system.

Kind Regards

Mohamed Eleiche
