************

This is version 2.0 of the GNUSTEP LIVE CD and Distribution.

What is GNUSTEP?
================

GNUSTEP is a LIVE CD, that is based on Debian "sid".
If installed to harddisk, it's a complete operating system, with
development environment. So it's also a distribution
of GNUstep.

Noteworthy changes in version `1.9'
=====================================

    * Added alot of more GNUstep software, and updated it
      to the latest versions.

    * More fonts.

    * Improved running/bootup speed.

    * New software: Fontmatrix, GrafX2, Emacs 23.x, MyPaint,
      Google Chrome, Vamps, Lives...

    * Comes with a Linux kernel 2.6.31.

How can I get support for this software?
========================================

Open a Terminal.app and type irssi -c irc.gnustep.org, then
/j #gnustep, or check the homepage for more details.

Where can you get it? How can you compile it?
==============================================

Where do I send bug reports?
-----------------------------------------------

WHAT'S NEW?
The most important addition is the Themes module bundle, which allows
the preview and the user-wide setting of the theme, without the need to
resort to set defaults form the console.

WHAT IS IT?
System Preferences is an Application to manage preferences through
pluggable control panel bundles. The Framework is compatible to Apple's.

Note: To take advantage of the theme features of the panel, like

This is version 0.17.1 of the GNUstep GUI library (`gnustep-gui').

1.1 What is the GNUstep GUI Library?
====================================

It is a library of graphical user interface classes written completely
in the Objective-C language; the classes are based upon the OpenStep
specification as release by NeXT Software, Inc. The library has been
enhanced in a number of ways to take advantage of the GNU system.
These classes include graphical objects such as buttons, text fields,
popup lists, browser lists, and windows; there are also many associated
classes for handling events, colors, fonts, pasteboards and images.

    The GNUstep GUI Library is designed in two parts. The first part is
the front-end component which is independent of platform and display
system. This front-end is combined with a back-end component which
handles all of the display system dependent such as specific calls to
X/Windows. This design allows the GNUstep applications to have the
"look and feel" of the underlying display system without any changes to
the application, and the library can be easily ported to other display

    The GNUstep GUI Library requires the GNU Objective-C compiler, the

*GSPDF* v0.3
==========

What is it?
--------------

*GSPdf* is a PDF and PostScript file reader, implemented as ghostscript
front-end. Ghostscript is required at runtime.

Where to get it?
--------------------

*GSPdf* is available at the *GNUstep* Application Project, GAP
(http://gap.nongnu.org).

http://gap.nongnu.org/*gspdf*/index.html

About this release
-----------------------

Release 0.3: a new Preference Panel to set the Ghostscript binary path.
Code clean ups

Release 0.2: This release bases directly on Enrico's original 0.1
release. The code has been adapted to work also with newer versions of
GhostScript which have added security restrictions. On the project side,
source files have been cleaned up, a ProjectCenter project has been
added and the makefile was regenerated to work with the current version
of *GNUstep* Make.
Objective C objects. For example, it includes classes for strings,
object collections, byte streams, typed coders, invocations,
notifications, notification dispatchers, moments in time, network ports,
remote object messaging support (distributed objects), and event loops.

    It provides functionality that aims to implement the non-graphical
portion of the OpenStep standard (the Foundation library).

    There is more information available at the GNUstep homepage at

1.1 What is the GNUstep makefile package?
=========================================

The makefile package is a simple, powerful and extensible way to write
makefiles for a GNUstep-based project. It allows the user to write a
project without having to deal with the complex issues associated with
configuration, building, installation, and packaging. It also allows
the user to easily create cross-compiled binaries.

1.2 Changes in version `2.2.0'
==============================

    * New -with-objc-lib-flag for specifying libobjc.

    * Automatically uses -lobjc_gc with configured with garbage

GSPDF v0.2
==========

What is it?
--------------

GSPdf is a PDF and PostScript file reader, implemented as ghostscript
front-end. Ghostscript is required at runtime.

Where to get it?
--------------------

GSPdf is available at the GNUstep Application Project, GAP
(http://gap.nongnu.org).
-----------------------

This release bases directly on Enrico's original 0.1 release, it has to
be considered a maintenance release.
The code has been adapted to work also with newer versions of
GhostScript which have added security restrictions.
On the project side, source files have been cleaned up, a ProjectCenter
project has been added and the makefile was regenerated to work with the
current version of GNUstep Make.

The GNUstep Startup Package, version 0.22.0 is now available.

What is the GNUstep Startup Package?
====================================

GNUstep Startup is a compilation of the following core GNUstep packages:
gnustep-make Version 2.0.7
gnustep-base Version 1.18.0
gnustep-gui Version 0.16.0
gnustep-back Version 0.16.0

The main advantage of Startup is that it includes a script to
automatically build and install the core GNUstep system.

After installing GNUstep Startup, you will have a complete system for
compiling and running GNUstep applications. You will, of course, need
to compile and install applications (such as GWorkspace) to actually
use GNUstep in a runtime system. For a complete developement system,
you would also need to install the Gorm and ProjectCenter
applications.

The installation scripts have been tested on:

Darwin/PPC 8.x
Darwin/PPC 7.x
Solaris/SPARC 2.7
NetBSD/ix86
NetBSD/sparc64
Debian Unstable/ix86
Gentoo/ix86
MingW/ix86

NOTES: Some systems (Debian, FreeBSD, Gentoo,
etc) have precompiled binaries of GNUstep available through their
normal distribution system. It may be preferable to get GNUstep this
way.

Note for developers and testers: You can use these scripts to build
the libraries from SVN. Just make sure the 'core' directory is at the
same level as the 'startup' directory, and run the InstallGNUstep script
from startup.

Changes in version 0.22.0
=========================

Upgrade to latest stable release. Files may install in LOCAL domain
now.

Where can you get it? How can you compile it?
==============================================

The gnustep-startup-0.22.0.tar.gz distribution file has been placed at
-----------------------------------

WHAT IS IT:

Battery monitor is a small utility that displays the status of your
laptop battery (charge/discharge and status). Currently, it works only
on Linux with ACPI with 2.6 kernels since it reads files in /proc and
relies on that format. It runs also on FreeBSD thanks to patches by
Chris Vetter.

It is a 0.3 release and thus has some limitations but it is already
working and I found no problems running it on my computer and thus I
wanted to share it with you all.

What is new in 0.3 ?
- bug fixes, especially a nasty memory leak
- percentage display
- better handling of strange ACPI cases (like charge greater than 100%)
- an Icon
- cleaner system to support different platforms

WHERE:

Battery Monitor is part of GAP, the GNUSTEP Application Project
(http://www.nongnu.org/gap/). Specifically its pages are:

This is version 0.14.0 of the GNUstep GUI library (`gnustep-gui').

1.1 What is the GNUstep GUI Library?
====================================

The first part is
the front-end component which is independent of platform and display
system. This front-end is combined with a back-end component which
handles all of the display system dependent such as specific calls to
X/Windows. This design allows the GNUstep applications to have the
"look and feel" of the underlying display system without any changes to
the application, and the library can be easily ported to other display
systems.

    The GNUstep GUI Library requires the GNU Objective-C compiler, the
GNUstep Base Library, the TIFF Graphics library, and a back-end
component like the GNUstep 'Back' Backend.

1.2 Noteworthy changes in version `0.14.0'
==========================================

    * New class NSGlyphGenerator for glyph generation

    * NSSplitView implemented setAutosaveName:

    * NSOpenGLView added some Mac OS X 10.3 methods

    * Manu bug fixes.

1.3 Where can you get it? How can you compile it?
==================================================

The gstep-gui-0.14.0.tar.gz distribution file has been placed at

1.1 What is the GNUstep Base Library?
=====================================

The GNUstep Base Library is a library of general-purpose, non-graphical
Objective C objects. For example, it includes classes for strings,
object collections, byte streams, typed coders, invocations,
notifications, notification dispatchers, moments in time, network ports,
remote object messaging support (distributed objects), and event loops.

    It provides functionality that aims to implement the non-graphical
portion of the OpenStep standard (the Foundation library).

    There is more information available at the GNUstep homepage at

1.1 What is the GNUstep makefile package?
=========================================

The makefile package is a simple, powerful and extensible way to write
makefiles for a GNUstep-based project. It allows the user to write a
project without having to deal with the complex issues associated with
configuration, building, installation, and packaging. It also allows
the user to easily create cross-compiled binaries.

1.2 Changes in version `2.0.6'
==============================

    * Fixed some spurious rebuilds of plists, and framework headers.

    * Added the -enable-absolute-install-paths option for Darwin
systems.

    * Install GNUstep.conf in /etc/GNUstep/GNUstep.conf on all systems.

GNUstep doesn't seem to be the right place for device drivers: GNUstep has to work on *nix, Windows, and even OS X. All of those have different driver APIs.

Or are you asking about writing drivers for NeXTSTEP? I don't think GNUstep would be much help there either. You'd be better off [using a virtual machine][1] to run NeXTSTEP-Intel or OPENSTEP.

1.1 What is the GNUstep makefile package?
=========================================

The makefile package is a simple, powerful and extensible way to write
makefiles for a GNUstep-based project. It allows the user to write a
==============================

    * Update C++ and ObjC++ support so that g++ and proper flags are
      automatically used.

    * Added a new filesystem layout for Apple Mac OS X and use this by
      default on this system.

    * NEEDS_GUI variable added to determine linking behavior against gui

Binary RPMs of GNUstep 2.0, for openSUSE 10.2, are now available for
download from:

<URL:http://www.rstonehouse.co.uk/extras/gnustep-2.0/openSUSE_10.2>

They comprise the core GNUstep libraries and tools, and some
applications. It is hoped that they will benefit end-users and people
wishing to evaluate GNUstep, by providing a quick and painless way of
setting up a basic GNUstep system.

The packages were built on gnustep-make-2.0.4 and configured with the
UNIX/Linux FHS file-system layout, slightly modified for openSUSE.

They were built under openSUSE 10.2 on a machine with i586
architecture. The binaries are stripped - please let me know if this
causes you any problems.

The packages use the stable versions of gnustep-base (1.14.2), and
gnustep-gui and -back (0.12.1). It is intended to upgrade to the
newer versions of these libraries when they are declared stable.

It is also hoped to expand the set of applications, when:

    * upgrading to newer versions of gnustep-base and -gui makes it
      possible to include new applications that depend on them; and

    * more applications are brought into line with gnustep-make-2.0
      and the new file-system layout.

If you have any comments, queries, complaints, suggestions, requests
for future additions etc, please direct them to me.

This is version 0.13.1 of the GNUstep GUI library (`gnustep-gui').

1.1 What is the GNUstep GUI Library?
====================================

The first part is
the front-end component which is independent of platform and display
system. This front-end is combined with a back-end component which
handles all of the display system dependent such as specific calls to
X/Windows. This design allows the GNUstep applications to have the
"look and feel" of the underlying display system without any changes to
the application, and the library can be easily ported to other display
systems.

    The GNUstep GUI Library requires the GNU Objective-C compiler, the
GNUstep Base Library, the TIFF Graphics library, and a back-end
component like the GNUstep 'Back' Backend.

1.2 Noteworthy changes in version `0.13.1'
==========================================

    * NSMenu - Added more MacOS X methods and an ivar.

    * Added support for hiding views.

    * Added Key-Value bindings implementation (NSKeyValueBinding) with
      support in several classes (NSControl, NSTextField, NSView, etc).

    * Added some MacOS X 10.4 methods to NSTableView.

    * Changed the NSCursor hot point to 0,0 for MacOS X compatibility.

1.3 Where can you get it? How can you compile it?
==================================================

The gstep-gui-0.13.1.tar.gz distribution file has been placed at
`ftp://ftp.gnustep.org/pub/gnustep/core'.

Read the INSTALL file or the GNUstep-HOWTO for installation
instructions.

1.4 Where do I send bug reports?
================================

Please log bug reports on the GNUstep project page
`http://savannah.gnu.org/bugs/?group=gnustep' or send bug reports to

ANN: GNUstep Startup 0.19.0

The GNUstep Startup Package, version 0.19.0 is now available.

What is the GNUstep Startup Package?
====================================

GNUstep Startup is a compilation of the following core GNUstep packages:
gnustep-make Version 2.0.2
gnustep-base Version 1.15.1
gnustep-gui Version 0.13.0
gnustep-back Version 0.13.0

The main advantage of Startup is that it includes a script to
automatically build and install the core GNUstep system.

After installing GNUstep Startup, you will have a complete system for
compiling and running GNUstep applications. You will, of course, need
to compile and install applications (such as GWorkspace) to actually
use GNUstep in a runtime system. For a complete developement system,
you would also need to install the Gorm and ProjectCenter
applications.

The installation scripts have been tested on:

Darwin/PPC 7.x
Solaris/SPARC 2.7
NetBSD/ix86
NetBSD/sparc64
Debian Unstable/ix86
Gentoo/ix86
MingW/ix86

NOTES: Some systems (Debian, FreeBSD, Gentoo,
etc) have precompiled binaries of GNUstep available through their
normal distribution system. It may be preferable to get GNUstep this
way.

Note for developers and testers: You can use these scripts to build
the libraries from SVN. Just make sure the 'core' directory is at the
same level as the 'startup' directory, and run the InstallGNUstep script
from startup.

Changes in version 0.19.0
=========================
source distribution. Other than minor configuration changes, it is
identical

ANN; GNUstep gui 0.13.0 unstable release

This is version 0.13.0 of the GNUstep GUI library (`gnustep-gui').

1.1 What is the GNUstep GUI Library?
====================================

The first part is
the front-end component which is independent of platform and display
system. This front-end is combined with a back-end component which
handles all of the display system dependent such as specific calls to
X/Windows. This design allows the GNUstep applications to have the
"look and feel" of the underlying display system without any changes to
the application, and the library can be easily ported to other display
systems.

    The GNUstep GUI Library requires the GNU Objective-C compiler, the
GNUstep Base Library, the TIFF Graphics library, and a back-end
component like the GNUstep 'Back' Backend.

1.2 Noteworthy changes in version `0.13.0'
==========================================

This is an unstable release. There may be backward compatibility issues
with previous releases of the gui library.

    * Switched to use LGPL 3 and GPL 3.

    * Added new methods from Mac OS X 10.4 for NSDragging,
      NSFontDescriptor, NSAttributedString, NSImageView,
      NSStringDrawing, NSParagraphStyle, NSView, NSCell, NSActionCell,
      NSAlert, NSApplication, NSBitmapImageRep, NSBox, NSColor,
      NSColorSpace, NSComboBox, NSComboBoxCell, NSDocumentController,
      NSEvent, NSScreen, NSFont, NSFontManager, NSFormCell, NSForm,
      NSWindow, NSTextField, NSTextFieldCell. Some ivar names were
      changed also.

    * Moved Postscript printing methods from NSView to
NSGraphicsContext.

    * Rewrote the NSView drawing mechanism to always use
      [displayRectIgnoringOpacity:inContext].

    * Report more controls as being flipped. (NSTextField,
      NSTableHeaderView, NSSlider, NSProgressIndicator, NSButton)
      NSTabView is still missing.

    * In NSAffineTransform use optimized primitive methods from base.

    * Add font attribute fixing to NSAttributedString. To allow for the
      output of glyphs not present in the current font.

    * Optimized the validation of edited cells.

    * Implementation of special connectors for Key-Value binding.

    * Base library version 1.15.1 is required for this release

1.3 Where can you get it? How can you compile it?
==================================================

The gstep-gui-0.13.0.tar.gz distribution file has been placed at
`ftp://ftp.gnustep.org/pub/gnustep/core'.
