Hi,

Any idea when this will be merged into the stable branch release?

OpenBSD contains the stable branch of gnustep in the ports tree, where
gnustep-gui 1.16.0 is included, which is the latest available stable release.

I tried several times to get the maintainer to switch to unstable, but as it
is policy to not include sth. called unstable into the ports, he refused my
request.

anyways, thanks for pointing me to -unstable.

cheers
Sebastian

Well, it sort of works, but not in a useful way for a machine where the
workspace manager doesn't own the appicons (i.e. one using GNUstep).

The program starts, and doesn't create any windows (not even the appicon
needed to activate the app). Also, "Got response with
postNotificationName:object:userInfo:deliverImmediately:for:" shows up in the
logs (doesn't happen without -autolaunch).

I closed this bug report, as you fixed the original problem. Alpha handling
for Windows drawing has been a hack all the time. Probably it would be best to
use the cairo backend on Windows in the long run.

The problem here is different from what it seems. Beside the message you get
displayed in the message window you should also see something like this at the
prompt:

2009-12-05 21:44:24.201 Ink[5673] Language: Spanish
2009-12-05 21:44:24.202 Ink[5673] Service to start: (nil)
2009-12-05 21:44:24.203 Ink[5673] Port: (nil)
2009-12-05 21:44:31.071 Ink[5673] Failed to get the spellserver

This tells you that there isn't any spell checker service installed for the
language you are requesting.

The spell checker in GNUstep works via a separate service application. An
example for this is provided in gui/Tools/GSspell.m
This service states in the GSspellInfo.plist that it only supports
AmericanEnglish, which is actually true, when you check the code.

You could easily change this to any other language, but adding support for
multiple languages will be harder.

Follow-up Comment #2:

I think this problem was caused by a change in the cairo API. They fixed a
long standing issue and we had to adopt our code. This was done in GNUstep
back almost half a year ago, this change is in 0.17.1 and was the main reason
for that release.

Your GNUstep packages are rather outdated could you please try newer ones or
even better GNUstep SVN? Another possibility is to switch back to an older
cairo release :-(

I cannot reproduce your problem, I have built gworkspace on many machines,
linux, bsd and windows. As other people do, i think it is a peculiarity of
your installation.
I am running latest svn trunk though.

What version do you have installed? On Linux I have:
      Latest version installed: 3.6.20-r1

I have:
ls /usr/lib/libsqlite3.*
/usr/lib/libsqlite3.a /usr/lib/libsqlite3.so

maybe you have 64bit? and have troubles with having both versions? Or mixed?
I can build fine on a full 64bit install.

To better diagnose, you should check what the error is in config.log or

Okay, so on looking at the code again, I realized that it was simply trying
to do a straight compare of non-Unicode strings when in fact one of them was
Unicode. Here's a patch that resolves the problem (since the comparison logic
for GSMutableStrings was correct, this just eliminates the incorrect code for
GSStrings and combines the two).

I'm having trouble right now committing this in SVN myself, so I would
appreciate if someone else would...

Details:

Something is seriously broken in NSMutableDictionary with respect to
GSUnicodeInlineString keys, as seen in this transcript from gdb. As you can
see, the dictionary wasn't able to retrieve the object when the key was that
type of string. This is using the latest tip of the trunk (r29095) but I think
it has been broken for a while. This issue didn't exist back in r28259 or so.

Very well spotted ... that's pretty obscure and must have been difficult to
track down.
It certainly makes sense to only remove notifications if the loop is known to
be running in a matching mode.

    _______________________________________________________

Details:

Despite my recent fix to re-enable saving of menu positions in the user
defaults, I sometimes observe that positions are not saved. I've tracked down
the problem to the point that NSMenu enqueues a special notification on the
default NSNotificationQueue. The enqueued notification is supposed to be
posted with notification style NSPostASAP in NSDefaultRunLoop mode, i.e.,
after mouse tracking has ended and the menu has been put to its new position.

By setting appropriate breakpoints I could verify that GSPrivateNotifyASAP
and notifyASAP indeed are called. The problem is that notifyASAP (and ditto
notifyIdle) just takes every notification off the respective queue and passes
it on to _postNotification:forModes:. This method in turn posts the
notification if the run loop is in the correct mode and discards it otherwise,
which is obviously wrong. Either notifyASAP and notifyIdle should only take
notifications with a suitable run loop mode off their queues or
_postNotification:forModes: should be replaced by a method that pushes those
notifications which cannot be posted back onto the appropriate queue.

Follow-up Comment #3:

I was able to open this image on my Mac with the QuickTime application. This
looks like it is rather a limitation of other Mac applications not of libtiff
that produced this image.

How was the image generated? Perhaps we need to provide a few more parameters
to libtiff to get all Mac applications to accept this format.
