GPG 2.0 vs. 1.49Excuse my late entry into this (or re-entry, rather), but I have a
question I've been unable to find the answer for. What is the main difference between GPG 2.0 and 1.49? Is one preferred over the other? Will 1.x continue in development? Thanks in advance. Re: GPG 2.0 vs. 1.492009/4/11 Michael Disabato <mike@...>:
> What is the main difference between GPG 2.0 and 1.49? The underlying architecture is completely different. Rather than one big program, v2 separates the functionality into smaller programs and offers gpg-agent, the ability to use smartcards and support for S/MIME. > Is one preferred over the other? >From the MacGPG2 wiki: Should I upgrade from v1.4.x? GnuPG v1.4.x and v2.x, and hence MacGPG and MacGPG2, achieve their goals in different ways and are designed to be completely complementary - you can run both on the same machine if required. However, the project leader has removed MacGPG from his machines and exclusively uses MacGPG2. > Will 1.x continue in development? Yes. Although I have the impression of having already addressed these questions in the Macgpg-users lists, here we go again, and I hope this helps. For information on GPG 2.0, please refer to the MacGPG2 project site: <http://macgpg2.wiki.sourceforge.net/>. The MacGPG2 project has been created, and is maintained by Ben Donnachie (Cc: in this message). MacGPG2 mailing list, where MacGPG2 are debated: <https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/macgpg2-users> The main differences between gpg2 and gpg: <http://www.gnupg.org/> GnuPG 2.0 is the new modularized version of GnuPG supporting OpenPGP and S/MIME. It requires the installation of several libraries, and more. MacGPG2 installer will install all the libraries required by gpg2, as well as gpg-agent and a mac-native version of pinentry. gpg-agent caches (and encrypts) the signing/decrypting key passphrase, without writing the passphrase to disk. pinentry provides a graphical interface where the user can type the required passphrase, only one during the length of the gpg-agent cache. Whether one is preferable to the other is the user's choice, according to her/his requirements. The question whether the development of gpg 1.4.* will continue is in the purview of the GnuPG developers, questions on this matter should be posted at the gnupg-users list: <http://lists.gnupg.org/mailman/listinfo/gnupg-users>. To the best of my knowledge, a 1.4.10 is in the making, and its SVN might be available at <http://www.gnupg.org/download/cvs_access.en.html>. If you are not familiar with and experienced in processing CVS/SVN releases (I barely understand the essentials, please don't ask me), I suggest that you do not touch these things. :-) Charly ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ This SF.net email is sponsored by: High Quality Requirements in a Collaborative Environment.
