GPS track smoothing?

Hi, does anyone have any references to some algorithms for smoothing GPS
tracks?

I'm going to be logging boats (speed from 0 to 40mph, generally around
2-8mph), over long periods of time, including when they are anchored.
There are no high precision requirements here, but I was going to log
the data at between minutely to hourly intervals, but there seems some
scope here to detect when the boat is at rest rather than just moving
slowly, and also to smooth the track a little

Mainly though just interested to hear a little more about techniques
people are using when there is no realtime requirement (ie smoothing
done after the fact) and for slower moving vehicles (including detecting
the difference between gps drift at rest and a slow moving vehicle)

Anyone got any favourite references?

Cheers

Ed W

check out gpsbabel; it has a fairly extensive set of stackable filters.

GDB has a 'break' feature; why doesn't it have 'fix' too?

Also, Andrew Johnson of TrailBehind.com released a Kalman Filter for
their iPhone GPS app.
