issue when trying to convert mtk binary log to another format

Hi!
I didn't found if this issue has been reported
it was working fine with an older version of gpsbabel
I have a qstarz Q1000p data logger, I use it to record every 5m
(tipical use is hicking)
the command used is :
gpsbabel -D 2 -t -w -i mtk -f /dev/ttyUSB0 -o gpx -F out.gpx

the bin is downloading fine, the file contain data
however the created gpx is an empty one, only the headers are
provided, I tried to re-do the conversion using mtk-bin for -i but the
result is the same.
I tried to create the gpx using bt747 and here all is ok, I get a
valid gpx file....
it was working some time ago, I don't remember the version of gpsbabel
I was using then

If it's a straight-forward text file, you (or anybody else) can probably add support for it via our style scheme described at http://www.gpsbabel.org/htmldoc-development/Styles.html When you're done, send us the style definition you created and a paragraph of doc (bonus points for a sample file and associated test suite entry) and we'll include it in the tree for future releases.

If you send it here and rely on someone else to do the work the odds of it being done in the time frame you want (potentially infinity) drop.

I keep a text file from it, and I was trying to convert it into GPX when I found your software.

I’m using version 1.3.6 to convert GPX files to KML with the default settings. The start of the resulting KML file looks like:

Is there an option to tell GPSBabel to leave the <Document><name> element blank in the KML output file? I looked through the documentation and I did not see any option for this purpose.

I have an app that uses these KML files to produce a map. Anything in the <Document><name> element is displayed on the map as a caption. Right now the phrase “GPS device” is showing up on my map as a caption.

For now I will write more php to read the kml file, erase this bit, and re-write the file. But if I could tell GPSBabel to just leave the <Document><name> element blank, then my app would run faster.

after a trip into the field last week I was downloading &

actually I do, but that's a bit besides the point & I'm not
really asking you to support research gear (but for the cost
of 1 sigf dig that would sure be nice).

good thermistors are pretty cheap these days, something that
gets you to better than 0.1 deg C is less than $0.50 so lots
of things have that. The idea of going to 0.001 deg instead
of 0.01 deg was to avoid introducing any FP rounding errors.
(mostly an issue for lat/lon which needs to be stored in a
double, but after tearing my hair out so many times due to
that (after the source data was gone) I try to preserve
precision+1 for everything now and let gzip worry about any
added zeros)

DOP was just to standardize at 1mm reporting. No arguement that
that will be slight overkill. I'll have a peek at some of our
Trible logs and see if I get any really tiny DOP numbers out of
that (should be good to about 2mm position in the horizontal).
I've got a feeling that the DOP there is in pseudo-meters though,
Gpsd has some code to convert, I'm not really sure how correct
their approach is though.

sure, I see your point.

for bit balance, the GPX output doesn't need to go to %.6f for
those things.

are you sure about that? I seem to recall something recently
discussing how the speed solution was often better than fix as
it took phase differences into account.

Well, the default install location probably requires write perms that you
don't have. But on any reasonable Linux-y host, you don't really _need_ to
spin through the install. Just copy the gpsbabel executable to someplace in
your path.

gpsbabel -h

What you describe is one of the biggest tradeoffs in logger class GPS vs. "real" ones. Loggers tend to slavishly record the receivers best guess at its location every second or so (sometimes configurable) even when that guess is nonsense or just noise. The higher end units (the kind that's 4x the size with 1/4 the battery life) have additional filtering and post-processing logic to throw out the "zingers" and de-noise the position, frequently allowing you to record points only when you've moved a certain distance or after a certain amount of time has passed.

If you have a unit that records HDOP, you can indeed use our discard filter to identify known crappy fixes. (Why GPSes record stuff they know is bogus is kind of a baffling to me, but many of the loggers do it.)

For the second case, I've had excellent luck using our 'simplify' filter to clean these up. It runs over a track, discarding points but trying to retain the interesting vertices to maintain the fidelity of the route. The 'relative' option even factors HDOP in. I usualy find some (not terribly scientific) experimentation is in order to strike a balance of reducing the track too much, cutting off corners and switchbacks and reducing it too little, leaving in clusters like you describe where I've parked or rested.

I understand that the rpm command works with its own database and I am guessing that the above message is telling me that I do not have (and am unlikely to get) permission to update that database.

Yeah, if I were bluehost, I wouldn't let you run rpm, either...

Installation Attempt #2 - tar.gz

I followed the instructions at http://www.tuxfiles.org/linuxhelp/softinstall.html and did:
1. unpack
2. ./configure
3. make

This went well and I now have a directory ~/bin/gpsbabel-1.3.6/ with lots of files that end mostly with .o, .c or .h

But the instructions I’m following now say I am supposed to ‘install’ the program and need ‘root’ permission to do so. Well, rats.

Well, the default install location probably requires write perms that you don't have. But on any reasonable Linux-y host, you don't really _need_ to spin through the install. Just copy the gpsbabel executable to someplace in your path.

ISTR that PHP has some funny rules about paths and permissions but it's pretty straight-forward. I don't consider myself a PHP jock and I was able to get through it.

Finally, I noticed the file install-sh* and understand this is a shell script. Am I supposed to do something with this file? The terse comments in that file were not very informative to someone who is trying hard to master this yet feeling their way through it for the first time.

Since I doubt that Bluehost is going to let you attach Garmin or Delorme devices to a USB port, just build GPSBabel from source. It should detect the absence/incompatibility and move on. I've found the 64-bit Linux systems provide a fairly incomplete 32-bit runtime so this may not be the only rope you have to tug at anyway. Build it from source as the Linux binary compatibility story is just too icky.

The transform filter was added to the GUI since the last beta. It'll be in the next beta.

Of course, the command line version, as described at http://www.gpsbabel.org/htmldoc-development/filter_transform.html , has been around for a while.

GPSBabel+ is not the complete package. Try the next beta of GPSBabel, of use the terminal for full effect. Note that this list does a reply to sender only by default. You may want to include the list for better answers.

I think it should be something like:

wpt->course = DEG(atan2(pvt->east, pvt->north));

Your patch should at least give a warning, because atan2 needs a
second argument.

Notice that I've rotated the result by 90 degree by swapping east and
north and then putting a minus in front of "north". Mathematicians start
counting at east, and count counter clockwise. Course is clockwise, so
should go the other way. So to achieve that, we should flip the whole
thing. This is done by adding another minus sign.

Now there is one more problem: The result of atan2 is between -PI and
+PI, so we also get negative courses. We could add:

if (wpt->course < 0) wpt->course += 360;

but we can ddo this more elegantly. If we rotate the result by 180
degrees and add 180 degrees the result will be between 0 and 360...

wpt->course = 180 DEG(atan2(-pvt->east, -pvt->north));

patch to increase precision in unicsv.c

Hi,

the attached patch increases output precision for fields like depth and
temperature with the unicsv output format. To-the-mm is perhaps erring on
the side of overkill, but to-the-decimeter was losing valid information.
No point in throwing away good data...

atan (x) is only just a little more than "x" when x is small.

This is what implementations use to implement atan. Many atan2 (and
atan) functions will start with something like:

Mac user convert routes to tracks

I don't understand how to use the transform filter, where to invoke it or how to make it work at all. I know this must be very basic but to me it looks like something to run from the command line on a dos machine. I am a Mac User, what am I to do?

What is the problem? What is the source of the gpx route?

Crystal ball mode: The route in question is created with Garmin RoadTrip,
you want a track to ensure that exactly *that* route is used in GPS.
Answer: Not possible at this moment, has been requested before.

I never saw any Gopal-device reading this file itself. There are just
a few 3rd party applications (like KOORD465.EXE) which read and write
.TRK.
If you put a 12-field-trk-File in the track-directory of an Gopal
<=4.7, it just does not care, since it starts a new file upon
starting. I never saw it appending a file after a restart.
Appending only happens after standby (Suspend to RAM), but this not
what i care about, because the filehandle is probably not beeing
closed meanwhile.

market uptake: sale of gopal4.8 started this year, updates are not for
free and the commerical prices offered for updates are NOT suitable,
because update of software plus update of map is normally around 80%
of a new device (which comes with faster processor, new battery and
new warranty).
But i suppose that 30% of the customers update anyway because the new
versions are available on p2p-networks. (but this is just my assumption)

Anyway: as Gopal just writes .TRK and (as far as i see) never reads
it, i suppose there there is no need to generate 2 different versions
of file as output format. Beeing able to read both versions will be
sufficient.

For the fileformat/date-issue: I will send you some samples via Mail,
so you get the full picture.

Thank you for you support in advance. gpsbabel is a great tool for
preprocessing my tracks for Openstreetmap.

I've just committed support for reading the date from field 9. I didn't change the writer. Can you confirm what happens if a Gopal < 4.8 sees this new 11 field format? Do you have any idea of the market uptake in this update? For example, we generally don't cater a lot to old versions when there are free updates, but if the updates to current versions are expensive enough that a lot of people don't update, we have different pain thresholds.

Oh, and can you confirm your sample was collected November 6 and not June 11?

The way we've handled this in the past has been to expose two separate entries in vecs.c (thus allowing two different menu options in the GUI) and then have the foo_init set or clear the equivalent of your 'binary' variable. If we were convinced anybody used binary LMX, I'd be more inclined to tackle this. :-) Let's just go with it for now.

support both formats. So I think, it makes sense to keep both
implementations close to each other.

(This also means, that even Nokia does not comply strictly to their own
specification :-)

Yes, this project has made it very clear that even when vendors do publish specs for such things, they're frequently not followed even internally within the company.

You should be able to almost write a style definition (see http://www.gpsbabel.org/htmldoc-development/Styles.html ) to read this. The "almost" is that we don't handle that timestamp format. It's certainly a surprising format for GPS data but not terribly complicated. In another window, I'm adding "NET_TIME" token to the XCSV modules to read and write this so in the next beta, you'll be able to pull out the time, too. Note that we don't have any internal concept of "distance from last point", either. If you have a sequence of lat/longs, it just seems redundant.

If you'll take a shot at writing the style definitinon an da paragraph or two of doc, and send it to the list so others can benefit, I'll add the NET_TIME.

atan (x) is only just a little more than "x" when x is small.

This is what implementations use to implement atan. Many atan2 (and
atan) functions will start with something like:
