Dear Edward !

Josip has pointed what is wrong : your pygtk version !
You need to have *pygtk-2.10* or later. You are using pygtk-2.8, you need to use pygtk-2.10 or pygtk-2.12 with Gramps-3.1.2.

I thought it was after an upgrade because, this dependancies issues often occur after an upgrade !

Note, you have installed "old" dependencies version !
python, gtk, python bindings, etc ...
I suppose it is a good idea to install versions, which work fine with current stable release :

Need at least pygtk 2.10 for this:

For Gramps 3.1.2 you need newer libraries
http://www.gramps-project.org/wiki/index.php?title=Windows_installer
suggest 2.12.9 and you said to have 2.8.6

You have not mentioned you installed PyGObject, but I guess you have, as the installer would have complained if it could not find an installed version.

What you will need to do when you get this error box, is open up "Error
Detail" by clicking on the plus sign
[+] Error Detail

This will open up a box with the error information in it.
then you will need to copy the entire contents of this box to this email
(select all the text, it will be multiple lines, Ctrl-C to copy the
text, then open the email for editing and Ctrl-V to paste into the email)

The contents of this box contains the all important error message
specific this the unexpected error, and may help us in solving your problem

Edward,

Your email referenced an image, but it looks like your client, Outlook Express, didn't attach the image & instead pointed to this URL:

mhtml:mid://00000042/!cid%3A1.2243151620@...

This shows that the img is linked via mhtml (MIME HTML) to a body part (1.2243151620@...) within a message (00000042), which looks to have originated in a yahoo email and isn't accessible by any of us.

You need to go into Outlook Express' options (Tools>Options) and click the Send tab. Make sure that you have HTML as the Mail Sending Format & under HTML Settings, have enabled "Send picture with messages".

Then, when composing the email, be sure the format is set to Rich Text (HTML).

Alternatively, you could upload the image to a server and point us to that URL. :)

I cannot view any picture attached to the email, so hard to diagnose the problem.

You have not mentioned you installed PyGObject, but I guess you have, as the installer would have complained if it could not find an installed version.

I had almost the same problem as Arnout. I wasn't able to export my tree because splash.jpg didn't load. But the only jpeg62.dll I had was the one from GTK+.

In the end, I got around the bug by converting splash.jpg (from the "images" directory of Gramps) into PNG and saving that PNG file as "splash.png". Now the splash image is displayed correctly, and I can export my tree.

The command on windows is:

"C:\Program Files\Python26\pythonw.exe" "C:\Program Files\gramps\gramps.py"

It does not need to run as admin so there should be no problems with
"user account control" on Vista or Windows 7. I now have it running
nicely on Windows 7.

This is not so easy.
If I understand your question correctly, there are 2 problems.
1) GRAMPS (the program) is massive you cannot expect to email GRAMPS to
anyone, especially if their computer has not previous been setup for
python and friends you mention in next question.
2) While GRAMPS can export data in a format that is convenient to move
between computers, it does not really support merging of data from
multiple sources. There was a recent thread on this topic in the users

I'm a little confused, are you installing for Windows or Linux? (the
link you provided is for Ubuntu Linux distribution)

Both systems will require these dependencies installed, however if your
using Linux then the package manager will handle these dependencies for
you, infact you probably already have the dependencies installed due to
other programs on your Linux system. However if your using Windows then
no-one is handling the dependencies for you, you must install them
manually. At one stage there was an attempt to make an all-in-one
distribution for windows, that would bundle the dependencies with the
main code, I don't know what has happened to that project.

After some searchs, it is often a python.exe rights management issue. "Windows User Account Control" was poping when running python.exe, users agreed but did not run Gramps into his locale (french).

Problem has been fixed by unchecking something like "run with admin rights" on python excecutable. This was out of Gramps !

My question is : Should windows package rather runs with pythonw.exe ? I have read that pythonw is linked with the WindowManager library, so it can do GUI operations and runs as a background process. Does it change something ? no more UAC ?

For the python excecution rights, I do not know what could be done !

Hello Helge!

First of all, I cleared the default key value of HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpeg: Default NeroPhotoSnapViewer.Files9.jpg.

Then I changed your _WinMime.py with original one and saw GRAMPS worked the best way with *.jpg files,

but did not work with other graphical extensions files.

I understood the problem with NERO 9, so I unistalled one, but all the keys with *nero* were still present in the registry.

I decided to remove all these keys manually and did it for about 1 hour ...uff - stupid work!

Then I checked GRAMPS with *.gif, *.jpg, *.tif and *.png files - everything was OK.

Finally, I tested the main applications - Internet Browser, Microsoft Word, graphical applications and mail - all of these worked the usual way.

Next time I will need to burn CD I will install NERO 9 without any wievers and players.

yesterday evening I was just a little bit quick.
Before changing some thing in registry:
What happens (before such changes) if you run a double-click on any .jpg file?
Do you find a registry key
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\NeroPhotoSnapViewer.Files9.jpg?
Which values are defined there?

If you try to patch the registry (may be temporary):
What happens if you run a double-click on the same .jpg file as before?
What happens running Gramps using the standard _WinMime.py?

I'm quit not sure if my quick hack should be suggested as Gramps standard solution. May be there is a special image tool using some thing special in registry or it's a wrong registry.

I'm glad to provide a first way to solve the problem.
I think too your problem is based on the value of
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpeg: Default

So far my experiences (but I'm not using XP today) there should be the default value "jpegfile" to direct to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\jpegfile

You may try this value and go back to the the standard _WinMime.py. But of course keep in mind changing a registry value may result in a total infarct of your windows system! It's quite dangerous! Be careful please.

One additional question from my side to have a better understanding what happens in general. What tells Gramps about the media type for all the added files using my special version of _WinMime.py?

I tried your _WinMime.py.

All types of images (jpg, gif, png) I need now can be added to Media and Gallery tabs without any problems.

What I found in registry:

First, these actions are running well on my PC (using Vista and Phyton 2.6). But I don't think that Phyton or the major Windows version are involved in any case.
May be, there is a Wrong MIME definition for jpg the other image formats in the registry.
So far I understood the code around line 103 in _WinMime.py there is no exception for wrong PROGIDs.
Did you remove an application for image handling last times?

To go forward to find a solution:
Which image handling application are on your PC? I'm little bit away from XP but I remember there were some applications having the possibility (some where in options) to define standard connections from image extensions to the application itself. Doing this these applications also set the MIME definitions of the registry.

Look at your registry:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MIME\DataBase\Content Type\"image/jpeg"\extension
--> what's written there?
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpeg
--> what's written there?
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\jpegfile
--> what's written there?

I did a quick hack in _WinMime.py. You may also try this file to go ahead. But it should prevent the exception only. In general it should be better to repair the MIME definitions.

pycairo-1.2.6-1.win32-py2.5.exe

on laptop with Windows XP Professional SP3.

When I try to add image (jpg, gif, png e.t.c) in Media or Gallery tab I get error:

I added optional third-party references on template (gramps.pot) ... :-[

Translation file is like a dictionary (or a lot of key/value).
File need to avoid duplicate entries and one entry will be used whatever
frequency (if already present do no need to be translated once more).

If you translate third-party references (at the end of the file), you
will be able to see translations on third-party plugins.

Why I added them on french translation (and template) ?
Because this references are not on POTFILES.in (not part of Gramps
sources). If someone want to translate one of them, they are optional on
template. You could also remove them.

If you are using Windows OS and you need to generate a "clean" template,
maybe you will miss some translation strings ! :(

"$ intltool-update -p" needs XML::Parser (perl)

There is a binary package
http://ftp.gnome.org/pub/gnome/binaries/win32/intltool/0.40/
but I do not know if it is able to retrieve glade or xml.in translation
strings.

I have finally got it sorted.

I installed:

python-2.6.3.msi
pycairo-1.4.12-2.win32-py2.6.exe
pyenchant-1.5.3.win32.exe
pygobject-2.14.2-2.win32-py2.6.exe
pygtk-2.12.1-3.win32-py2.6.exe
PyGTKSpell-2.25.3.win32-py2.6.exe
gtk2-runtime-2.16.6-2009-09-12-ash.exe
gramps-3.1.2-1.exe

Gramps still would not run. The only error from the command line said
lib glade could not be loaded. Eventually, by trial and error and
guessing, I found I needed to copy the following to the GTK\bin directory:

libglade-2.0-0.dll
libxml2.dll

I got these from the recommended GTK/Glade install.

I now have a working Gramps with the annoying find bug fixed.

Yes, I also believe that Gramps still need libglade.
Where are you copying libglade dll to ?
I have installed my gtk in GTK2-runtime, so I put libglade in the
runtime bin directory. C:\Program Files\GTK2-Runtime\bin

Try running gramps from the command prompt, it might tell you whats missing.

- start command prompt
- cd to the location you installed gramps (i.e. c:\gramps)
- then either gramps.py (if python is on your path) or python
gramps.py - any error messages?

I thought (I may be wrong) that GIMP comes bundled with it's own version
of GTK, and was independant of any installed GTK on the HD.
i.e. when I look at C:\Program Files\GIMP-2.0\bin I see files such as
libgtk-win32-2.0-0.dll & libgobject-2.0-0.dll

I have a system I need to get GRAMPS running on, .... so I might upgrade
the GTK as well see if I have similar problems.

The patch is a SVN patch. Not for applying to an installed version of
GRAMPS.

You need to apply it with a SVN command (or TortoiseSVN if you use that).

However there is no need!, .... the last comment, indicates it's already
in SVN Trunk, so update your GRAMPS source tree (trunk) to the latest
and the bug fix will already be in the code for testing.

How to install a GRAMPS-patch under Windows?

I once reported a GRAMPS-bug related to Narrative Website creation.
This bug is solved in the meantime and a patch was provided - many thanks to SNoiraud (the Developer)

Unfortunately, I could not find a way how to implement the patch and found nothing in the wiki.
Can someone please tell me how to run the patch under Windows Vista ?

Try http://sourceforge.net/projects/gladewin32/files/ you should find 3.6.1

Also have a look at look at http://glade.gnome.org/ , they now seem to
be distributing windows binaries, however when I tried version 3.6.7 I
had a problem with the icon images in Glade itself, but it's been a
while and YMMV, maybe I didn't have something set up properly.

The only reason for installing GLade is to get libglade dll, not sure if
the newer 3.6 series of Glade are supplying the DLL anymore.

If you seriously want to recover the data you must stop using the
partition with your home drive immediately. This means stop booting
into that Windows environment. Let us know if you plan to try and
recover the file, it's actually easier on windows than on linux!
