GRAMPS article deleted from German Wikipedia

Hi,

I just noticed that the GRAMPS article has been erased from the German
Wikipedia, apparently for notability reasons.

http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:L%C3%B6schkandidaten/23._September_2009#GRAMPS_.28gel.C3.B6scht.29

This is obviously inappropriate and detrimental to the project. I'd
ask the German contributors/translators to recreate a proper article there.
It can also be based on one of the many articles available in multiple
Wikipedias.

I'm afraid that my german is not up to Wikipedia standards. I suggest
that if you begin recreating the article you start witha discussion of
it's uses compared to other genealogy software. Eastmans genealogy
website has several reviews of the various versions, see also Linux
Review, they've done a few reviews.

The german wikipedia is currently suffering from wikipedia-admins going postal. They are deleting a lot of stuff which they think does not have enough "relevance" to be in the wikipedia. There are a lot of discussions going on about this. So if anybody goes to work on the article, keep a copy of it. It might get deleted in wikipedia again before you pressed "OK" to submit it!

I would certainly suggest that you put pressure on them to use the
tags to request improvements instead of just removing articles.

Apparently they believe the software is irrelevant. I suppose all
sourceforge users can see file download statistics, from the downloads
there, you see some 12000 possible users. That is those that download
instead of using what is present in their distribution.

Is that relevant? I really wouldn't know. Should it cost 50 Eur, it's
a nice sum :-)

So some 5000 downloads in normal months, more after releases.

Genealogy is a small market.

That's a pertinent rationale but this issue is outrageous imo. These people
who erased the article have a lot of nerve. For starters there are about 15
interwiki links, each one is an article GRAMPS in a different language. Probably
some proprietary software partisans. It's detrimental not only to GRAMPS but to
Free Software as a whole.

>From what I could read of the original discussion link you sent, I
think the main concern is that there is no democracy in this deletion
of articles. The discussion was 50/50 for and against which should be
enough to work on improving the article instead of deleting it, that's
one problem. Of at least as much concern is the fact that the
discussion was not about whether the subject of the article was
notable, but whether the article itself was notable. They failed
totally to look at real statistics of who and why some people use
gramps.

French version on wikipedia is marked as "a draft".
http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gramps
I agreed ... but still there !

I suppose like for german, there is more complete articles out of wikipedia (also powerded by Mediawiki) :
http://wiki-de.genealogy.net/GRAMPS
Same for french :
http://fr.geneawiki.com/index.php/Gramps

Note, french wikipedia version is using Gramps for illustrating genealogical software ! :)
http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Logiciel_de_g%C3%A9n%C3%A9alogie
Also on German version (that's not very logical ...) :-\
