Hey folks, just updated to 2.2.1 and noticed that I no longer received email notices for yahoo or hotmail. Any ideas??

Initial Comment:
Hi,

This is half a feature req, half a bug report - and I
also only try to suggest a resolution, not patching it,
as I'm not familiar with GAIM codebase.

So, the current GAIM 2.0 cvs situation is the
following: if I switch from one ICQ status to another
(say to DND from Occupied), my ICQ privacy status
changes to "Block only the users below". As that list
is empty for me, everyone is suddenly allowed to
connect me.

Well I think the culprit is somewhere in this region:
oscar.c:6598-6601
In my opinion the privacy status set in the else branch
should be something selected by the user, not something
always chosen by default.

I changed the else branch to "account->perm_deny =
GAIM_PRIVACY_ALLOW_BUDDYLIST;" for myself, but it
really should be a preference somewhere.

Also on a separate note, it would be nice to implement
disabling the status display on the ICQ webpages.

Closing this for the reasons mentioned in my previous comment. Better
privacy support is on our list of things to do, so there's no need for
another feature request about it. And the ability to disable the status
display on the ICQ webpages will exist in Pidgin 2.0.0, once it's released.
It can be toggled from Accounts->ICQ #->Set Privacy Options.

This is intentional. It's how the official ICQ clients
behave. For ICQ, the privacy setting determines your
visibility/invisibility.

To make it seem less stupid we need a new privacy API.

When logged into the ICQ with Gaim, my status is set
to n/a (not available) from the web
(http://www.icq.com/features/web/indicator.html).

In the original ICQ client 5.0, there is an option
which let me allow to enable seeing my status from the
web: 'Allow others to view my Online/Offline status
from the Web'. If I disable this option I appear as
offline from the web, if I enable this option, I
appear as online from the web.

I would siuggest to implement this option into Gaim.

what it's not possible is to use it with MeeboMe Widget

this widget is a peace of embedded Flash player that you can add in your blog or in your web site

who enter your site can chat with you without knowing your credential!

can choose a nick name and see your online status

with game you get a request of authorization every times somebody refresh or change position in your web page

plus the nick name choose by the guest user is not taken..
this mean that when the page get reloaded the user name change too.. and you didn't know who are you talking with

if you log into the meebo web site all work good..

there's no chat client around, but the meebo web page, capable of doing this

Interesting. Yeah, you have to sign up for it. Well, more accurately it
only works with your @meebo.org Jabber account, and only when you create a
widget and embed it somewhere on your web page.

I haven't looked at MeeboMe in great detail, but I imagine you have to
sign up for it somewhere, and there's some place you can turn it off. If
all of the above is true, then I see no reason not to auto-authorize, as
the authorization is just an implementation detail. If your web client
auto-authorizes the meebome widgets, I see no reason for it not to happen
on the server, so any Jabber client can be used w/o modification.

BTW, the site linked here to DLLs that auto-authorize doesn't have any
source posted for the DLLs. Someone should ask nicely.

my 3c (inflation, y'all understand). Following from the stance that one
should never fully rely on any protcol's servers to be totally safe with
regards to privacy, it should be a client side preference whether the
client can trust server auto-authentication (the default should be to not
trust the server). E.g., I've logged in to do some work, I don't want to be
spammed with messages from people commenting on my blog, so I disable it. I
get home from work, and enable it while casually browsing the 'net.

The problem, as I see it, is that there's no interaction between the
client and the servers whereby the user gets to decide whether they want
auto-authentication on (or for that matter, one could consider any
'advanced' server side privacy). Nor does the server get to explain why
such a feature might be useful to the user.

Gah, I really need to mess with the jabber spec some day. I might be able
to speak without my donkey being involved.

faceprint: How do you feel about a server auto-authorizing people in your
roster like that? The meebe crew have mixed feelings... Some of us feel
like a Jabber server should never authorize people automatically. Others
of us feel like the server should auto-authorize the people who contact you
via the flash widget.

GTalk basically does the same thing, right?

For the nickname meebo is using parts of XEP-0172, the user nickname spec.
Specifically the non-pubsub method given in example 18. We should add
support for that in Gaim, since the spec is a draft now, and it's pretty
awesome.

It probably makes sense to do the auto-authorize stuff in a plugin.

You guys are basically right. Each time someone loads a widget they're
logged in with a new, random, guest Jabber account. This new account adds
your @meebo.org account to its roster. So Gaim would need to auto-approve
all authorization requests coming from guest#.meebo.org.

cause when i select "allow all to contact me" still it ask for

widget get loaded..
and then use some strange behavior to assign those different random nick
to the choosen-by-user nick name..

in gaim we have multiple chat opening.. and you can't know if you are
talking with the same person as before and so on...

I suspect what's happening is that the jabber details for IM are seperate
from meebo's blog section and that any meebo member can comment on a blog,
but the "standard" buddy rules apply to the gaim client. Thus, gaim is hit
by authorisation requests from this 'anonymous but trusted' source every
time a web-authenticated meebo user refreshes a page.

Of course, this is pure guesswork. I'm sure Mark can enlighten us all :)

Okay, I think I understand it now... The problem is that you get a million
authentication requests, right? What happens if you go to the Tools menu,
then to Privacy, then you select your meebo.org account there, choose
"Allow all users to contact me", and then click OK? Does that stop the
authentication requests?

Mark, can you shed any light on what's happening here (from Gaim's point
of view, not Meebo's of course)?

It would be nice to have "View Log" by right clicking on a tab. It's just a little bit more convenient then Conversation - View Log.

Also, it would be nice that when my previously requested feature is implemented for view all logs. If View All Logs was displayed by right clicking on any tab. (that is not as logical as the above method, but regardless it would make the process of accessing logs much faster)

Summary: IRC account lost on exit: same server, different ports

Initial Comment:
Gaim's IRC account handling does not make any
distinction between the same server with different
ports. The Accounts dialog allows two accounts to be
created with the same IRC server and different ports.
I can add the chat to my list for each Account.
However, I can only join one of the chats.
Double-clicking the other chat does nothing. This
might indicate that Gaim thinks I am already connected.
Upon client exit, only the last account created is
remembered. So perhaps IRC accounts are distinguished
only by server name, which is incorrect.

The test case is on irc.freenode.net, where the stable
server is on port 6667, and the test server is on port
9001. I want to help with the load testing, but I
can't be on both networks.

Your summary of "clean" is pretty accurate. Basically, it
needs to "fit in" with the other Gaim code, and it shouldn't
do anything too horrible. I can't even begin to enumerate
"horrible" things, because previous submitted patches have
shown me that my imagination is not powerful enough.

As far as backwards compatible, I'm really only concerned
that a Gaim using user@host:port does something reasonable
when it encounters a user@host entry with a separate port
item as gaim currently behaves. This makes upgrading Gaim
just Do the Right Thing, and people don't need to notice
what's happened. Going the other direction is probably
impossible.

I'm willing to at least try to understand enough about Gaim
to patch this. But I do not know what you mean by "a good,
clean patch" and "backwards compatible with old account files".

I guess the easier question to quantify is "how old"? If
it's just a matter of me downloading an older version of
Gaim (and GTK), and setting those up so I get old files,
then I can just keep a copy of them, and use a copy to test
in the patch. So how old? I don't suppose the config files
store the Gaim version anywhere to make compatibility
detection easier?

A good, clean patch, I can only begin to guess. I would
assume that it must allow building flawlessly and no runtime
crashes in at least Windows and Linux, that the new code be
formatted like the rest, that it's a collection of diff -U
patches or a single diff -rU patch, and that it does what it
intends, and doesn't do what it didn't intend. Beyond that,
is there a specific test suite or procedure to follow? Or
are there any other meanings impled by good & clean?

As Luke described, Gaim only distinguishes two IRC accounts
by nick and server host; therefore, if you wanted to use a
different port on the same host, you would have to use a
different nick.

I am not interested in further complicating matters by
involving the port number in this. If I got a good, clean
patch to do so, I would accept it. (Note that it has to be
backwards compatible with old account files!) In my
opinion, the bug which should be fixed here is that Gaim is
apparently allowing you to create two accounts between which
it cannot distinguish; this certainly sounds erroneous to me.

Oh, I didn't notice this had been moved from Bugs to Feature
Request. To me, this is a bug, (albeit by design), as it
doesn't handle a perfectly valid case. But for a real
feature request which might be pertinent, consider this.

What about the case where IRC servers allow only a certain
number of connections to a port, and therefore provide
multiple ports? For IRC, the Server Port (SP) should handle
a range (SPR), and try from first to last, or at random or
round robbin. Therefore, an IRC account would need to
consider SP as a string, not as a number. UN@SN:SPR

I have not yet examined account*.[ch], so I'm not aware if
all protocols are required to handle accounts in the exact
same manner, or if each protocol has it's own account type
struct, or if all possible account values are tossed into
the account struct and only the account-specific ones are used.

If you can refer me to an archived discussion of the account
handling then I might better understand what decisions were
made and why, and how the code came to be where it is. Thanks.

its acting exactly as designed. Originally we defined an
irc account to as identified by the SN alone, which didn't
work well, because of the same sn on multiple networks. so
we changed it to use a jabber style identification using
sn@server as the identifier. this would require it to be
sn@server:port to identify, for what is clearly a corner
case, freenode happens to be testing new code on the same
host name but a different port. I'm not sure what the
appropriate course of action is.

Correct, that the behavior is incorrect and will be fixed at
some point? Or correct, that Gaim won't handle it, and

If nobody is going to fix, then would patches to solve the
problem be accepted for review, or sumarily ignored? I have
no build environment or patches yet, but it is annoying
enough for me to investigate.

The server and port are different. These should be allowed
as separate accounts. And if support is not planned to do
the proper handling, then for consistency's sake, the Add
Account should be modified to scan for the existing IRC
server name and disallow adding with a warning, so as not to
lead someone to initially believe that Gaim will handle this
properly.

Sorry for double post, but I just noticed some additional
behavior. On the buddy list were both channels with an
alias set to indicate the ports.

#channel (6667)
#channel (9001)

When I joined either channel, the last one (9001) was
displayed in the conversation window title. When I deleted
the #channel (9001), then the conversation window title
immediately changed to #channel (6667), further indicating
that the accounts do not distinguish the ports as the
Account UI would at first seem to indicate by allowing two
entries to be created and exist. Upon client restart, or
merely joining channels, the truth of the bug is revealed.

I think it'd be useful to add a "scroll to bottom"
button in GtkIMHtml objects (or their containers? I'm
not very familiar with the source yet). It could be a
button just below the "scroll down" button on the
scrollbar.

The benefit would be when finished reading a section of
the log/buffer, one could just hit the "scroll to
bottom" button, then the auto-scrolling would once
again take over.

I don't think there's any problem with taking up
valuable screen real estate -- the scrollbar already
takes up enough space, and it'd only be causing the
scrollbar to be made slightly shorter.

Adding comments from #1352175:
Often I do the following when using gaim for IRC: I scroll
up, forget I've done so, then think "odd, why haven't I
received any messages?", do a /ping, seemingly get no
result, and so log out and back into the server.

It would be good if, like in xterm, gaim had an option so
that when you type something in the message window (to be
precise, when you send a message or command), the main pane
automatically scrolls to bottom.

Friends tell me I'm not the only one to have this confusion.

I can't seem to add the following buddy to my gaim
list: jrobinsonIMS7308

When I try to add this buddy I get a popup window with
the title "Unable To Add" and the body of the dialog
box (with a Close button) says:

"Could not add buddy jrobinsonIMS7308 because the
screen name is invalid. Screen names must either start
with a letter and contain only letters, numbers and
spaces, or contain only numbers."

However in the dialog box you can see a space between
the 8 and the word "because". Check the attached file
for a display.

I found the problem! I am cutting/pasting the buddy
name from Thunderbird. I'm cutting pasting by just
doing double-click on the word. It seems it's picking
up something at the end that I can't see.

I would suggest that the window that's taking the buddy
name ignore white spaces and control characters that
might appear at the beginning/end of the name. It's
quite confusing since the message looks ok and the
buddy name looks ok, yet you still get that popup window.

If you want to send me gaim's debug output from the start of
the connection to completion of signon, I'll see if I can
help you figure out the TLS thing.

I agree some sort of visual notification would be nice. But
I really can't think of any place to put it, that works well
for multiple accounts. What we really need is for the
jabber options to go something like this:

[ ] Allow unencrypted plaintext passwords

Hrm. I never get the "(ssl)" part. I may have an issue
with my jabberd v2.0s8 not supporting/using TLS. I'll
contact those folks about that issue.

However, this brings up another point. I think it's
important to have the encryption status more prominently
displayed. I don't want to have to go to the debug window
to see if my chats are encrypted. Maybe something like the
little golden lock icon in the lower-right of Firefox? Thanks.

Connect with debug output enabled. Every send and receive
to and from the jabber server should have "(ssl)" towards
the beginning of the line, i.e.:

If you're not seeing those, then SSL/TLS was not negotiated,
and it is in fact an unencrypted stream.

I'm using v1.3.0 on Windows, and everybody here gets a popup
about using plaintext auth over unencrypted streams. If
they allow the connection, it works fine. My jabberd2
server (v2.0.0s8) is requiring TLS connections in the c2s
config, so I'm pretty sure that they're encrypted when they
work. So why do I get the popup? Better yet, how can I
tell, in GAIM, that my connection is encrypted?

Hi,
I believe it would be very interesting to have an
option to resize the buddy list automatically. It
should not be allowed to exceed the workspace height
however.

So when, for example, one of my buddies sign off, the
window shrinks, and no desktop space is spilled. It
would be pretty cool! I think this is not really
complicated to implement, but I may be totally wrong
since I don't really know about gtk.

Can the buddy list window height be permitted to be
adjusted automatically to fit the height of its
contents, as people sign in and out? (optional feature
of course)

I know this was rejected in 2002 but I cannot see a
good reason for this besides GTK+ not providing gaim
with the height of the screen (or the height of the
available space, e.g. screen height minus taskbar and
other adornments). I imagine the GTK+ API has advanced
significantly since 2002 so this feature may now be
able to be implemented.

At least under *NIX -- under Windows I imagine GTK+
might not be able to understand the taskbar height. It
certainly has no idea about a taskbar at the top of the
screen.

One workaround for all such issues could be "reserve x
px at screen edge {top|bottom|left|right}". My taskbar
for example is two rows, so that's 16 px times two (32)
plus 15 spacing, so I'd reserve ~50 px at the bottom.

For my home with the taskbar at the top, no need to
reserve anything as gaim would max the window height
(if I had that many people online!) at (screen_height -
blist_top_Y).

For what it's worth, Miranda IM already has this
feature, and it's nice, as I like a small, compact
window but sometimes I find that it ends up too small.

It happens very often to me, if I write to someone over

Because then I need to search for the text again. Some of my
log files are quite long so it happens that I find more than
1 result if I use the search function. On the other hand I
can't remember everything, can I?

I thought it wouldn't be too expensive to add some kind of
html-tags in the logs to mark the text and that it can be
found easierer later.

Initial Comment:
Currently several IM services support an "other side is
typing" indicator of some sort in the recipient's chat
window. This helps solve the ambiguity between an
iminent response and no activity, but I propose
something even more useful...

What if the indicator also showed the running word
and/or character count of what was being typed on the
other end?

This solves another kind of ambiguity -- where the
sender has typed something but then thought better of
it and deleted their text or closed the window
altogether. Without a wordcount indication, the
recipient sees just a typing indicator and then waits
and waits but nothing happens. With the wordcount
indicator they'd see the count go up, then back down to
zero and would know not to expect a message.

Also a wordcount indicator would help the recipient be
patient when the sender is writing those marathon IM's
since they would have some reassurance that indeed
progress is being made..

Unfortunately being that Gaim is an integrator and thus
you won't necessarily have Gaim on both ends of the
connection, I don't know how possible it would be to
implement this kind of extension. Maybe this feature
would only work when both sender and recipient are
using Gaim...

It's really annoying when IMs interrupt me while I'm
playing games (some of which can't be easily alt-tabbed
out of), but as a lazy user, I can't be bothered to set
myself away before playing. I wish there were a plugin
that could be configured to automatically set different

something like a filter on the path to the executable
or the command lines.

Initial Comment:
When dragging and dropping an image onto a conversation
window, a dialog pops up asking whether you would like
to set it as your buddy image or send it as an image.

IMHO, this is far too intrusive. A better and more
appropriate way of doing this is shown in the attached
PNG files. Dragging over either the buddy image or main
window pops up a tooltip, notifying the user what would
happen if they drag it there. Obviously then dropping
it would do the desired operation.

tunneling of ICQ traffic with the hosts reachable at

My version of gaim(v1.3.0 on Debian/Linux, i386) only
reports an 'Error 404' when I'm trying to use
http.proxy.icq.com:80 as a HTTP proxy.

Will there be support for this ICQ proxies soon?

Initial Comment:
Trillian had a nice feature that would show the webmail
accounts and you could doubleclick on the webmail
account and open your email. There are times I'd like
to send email, or read an email, and letting Trillian
open the site was really nice.

I know GAIM can do the same thing since it does it when
I receive email, but can it would be nice to envoke the
email protocol with out having received email, just to
speed up the process of logging in to yahoo or hotmail.

My Buddy window is set up to only show logged in
buddies. I want to add a New Buddy Pounce for someone
who is NOT logged in, so I have to use the the
"Tools/Buddy Pounce/New Buddy Pounce" dialog, which is
fine.

In this dialog, I would like the ability to pick from a
list of all of my buddies instead of having to remember
exactly how folks spell their silly handles. Maybe the
list could be provides through a dialog invoked from a
"Browse..." button, or the text field could be replaced
with a list box.

Hello,
by reading the lastest gaim suggestion for google
summer of code, I though about one thing to do
on the gaim UI to be more useful and adaptable to
users needs.
I think it would be a good idea to rewrite the UI
part by using massively .xml configuration files.
Thoses files would be used in order to describe
the different components of the gaim UI.
by component I mean the buttons as well as the
windows or the buddy list organisation (vertical list,
circle, ...).

There is a problem with the plugins of gaim ?
ok, in an .xml file it should be possible to
define a "plugins area" and to specify the way they
are inserted (from left to right, right to left,
vertical, horizontal,
fixed number of placeholders,...).

The buttons (or any other graphical element) would be
described with svg or other to superseed a specific
gtk/gnome theme button.

least but not last an .xsd file can be use for UI .xml
validation.

Gaim would provide a default set of .xml files to have
an UI ;)
The main interrest here is the liberty of any user to build
an UI that fit exactly to its needs without having to
develop
a specific plugin. (I think plugins have better to do
elsewhere).

Of course using .xml files can be very heavy in resources
utilization but it is not mandatory to have a realtime
update
of the .xml file, component first use loading for less
powerful
computers could be used.

What do you think ?

Initial Comment:
Under Win 2000 SP 4 at least (gaim 1.3.0 and GTK+ 2.6.7
A), IRC MOTD windows are showing a sans-serif
proportional typeface. Given that IRC is predominantly
a monospace environment, using a proportional face for
the MOTD display upsets any formatting in the MOTD that
relies on monospace type for its arrangement. I suggest
gaim switch to using monospace type for the MOTD window.

The MOTD window is also a bit on the small side, the
lines of text already wrap as they are now (in
proportional type). How badly this happens depends on
the server; SlashNET Coruscant server's MOTD only has
one line that wraps, but Freenode's Tolkien server's
text wraps like crazy. Using a monospace font would of
course worsen this as the letters are mostly wider for
a given point size.

Both server's ASCII art graphics get mangled by the font.

GTK+ permitting, the best approach IMO would be to size
the window according to the longest line of text in the
MOTD (screen width permitting), and then you'd
guarantee to always get it right. That failing, a boost
to the window size should help instead :)

when someone adds you in yahoo, it doesn't ask
permission, it adds u right away. if you chose to deny
someone to be on ur list, yahoo (messenger) sends a
packet to the server saying to remove your name from
that person's list.
currently gaim only asks you if you want to add them
after they add you. there is no way to deny a request!
this is my major gripe with gaim. it can't be that hard
to code.
i get tired of having to log in with zinc
(www.larvalstage.org/zinc/) just to /unbuddy some idiot
who adds me without asking.

This is the room list, not the user list.

The only way to see if it'd slow things down is to test. The
question is, can a modern computer keep up with the sorting and
display as the data comes in over the network? The network is
quite a bit slower, so it might be alright.

Would it be acceptable to just let rooms fill into the list
(alphabetically) as the server sent them to us? It wouldn't be as
useful if you were to start at the top and manually look through
the list for the room you wanted, but given the speed at which
names come in, I doubt most users do that.

Initial Comment:
Hi,

previously I used saberhagen.freenode.net to connect to
IRC. Now I think it is better to let
irc.eu.freenode.net decide which regional server I
should connect to. Trying to switch the server was a
pain. If I had just gone the obvious route and changed
the setting in "Tools - Accounts - Modify" I would have
lost all subscribed groups and logs (I did that once).
To prevent that I opened the following files in an
editor: accounts.xml, accels and blist.xml and replaced
every occurence of saberhagen.freenode.net with
irc.eu.freenode.net. Furthermore I renamed the log
directory accordingly. I think this should be easier
to do and via the GUI. I set to category IRC for now
but this might apply to others as well. I also think
this is borderline bug instead of RFE considering the
unexpected result when one goes the "official" route.

This is for the WinGaim plugin:

It would be nice if the away window itself started
flashing in the task bar when you received a message
while away (just like when you receive a message
normally in IM windows)... The flashing away window is
much more visible than the blinking system tray icon.

If possible, this would be a turn-offable option, just
like the other blinking taskbar option... A sort of
"Flash away window when messages are received" option.

Initial Comment:
I would regularly use Gaim as my IRC client if it would
allow me to "join" channels while keeping those pesky
channel windows away, the same way that, say, I am
"joined" with my regular jabber contacts: I do not have
to keep a window open to be reachable by them. Once
they contact me, a window pops up, or optionnally, the
tray icon logo blips.

What I would like would be an option that would allow
me to join IRC channels without having to keep that IRC
channel window open. When activity is detected in the
channel, some proper plugin/monitors could warn me
their usual way.

I guess this could be done by having a special setting
in the IRC channels. When right clicked in the buddy
list, one could have a "channel joined" toggle that
would allow us to join/part channels without having the
window open.

All this because the current system doesn't scale: once
you're in 4 channels, you have to keep 4 window open.
This is unbearable, and not really within the general
spirit of other IRC clients...

This is not likely to be implemented.

I disagree; it is very bearable, and very much in the spirit
of _all_ other IRC clients. You need not have four windows
open in your example, simply put four tabs in the same window.

Note: Currently using Yahoo.

It would be nice to be able to right-click on a group
name and have an option to invite all buddies in that
group to a chat (not just online buddies).

Or, after creating a chat room, have an option to
invite all buddies in a group (not just online buddies).

Example, I sometimes need to open a chat room and
invite multiple buddies to the room. It would be nice
to only have to type in the invitation text string once
and have the invitation go out to all of my buddies
listed under that particular group.

Situation:
I'm coding and I'm talking to a group of people. Only
three of them are people I want to talk to, the others
are annoying fools I would love to stab in the face for
taking me out of the zone.

What's Wrong With That:
Random people are stupid and annoying. As a developer,
I don't want to talk to them. As a human being, I'll
talk to them and probably try to get in their pants.
Since ideally I'm keeping my social and business life
seperate, this would be invaluable.

Solution:
Whitelisted group flashing. Disabled flashing for
everyone, except for a certain group I nominate. If any
of these speak, I'm pestered. Otherwise, I don't care
overly much.
Perhaps even tie this to away messages -> so setting
"busy - work" triggers one behaviour, "away, miserable"
triggers another.

For corporate chat use on Windows (we have both jabber and
silc), I can tell you that the inability to allow for chat
conversations to flash is *desperately* needed in the
community. I dug up this sourceforge account which I've
never posted with before just to humbly request that the
chat window taskbar flashing be added as an option (checkbox
in preferences) -- my company has have several employees on
various teams paying for Trillian just for the single
feature of taskbar notification for chat windows.

I know the assumption is that chat windows are constantly
bustling and the notification would be annoying, but it
varies widely among gaim users. For example, my employees
are all IT multi-taskers and we can't go into 4 different
chat rooms (engineering, development, support, emergency,
etc.) every 5 minutes to see if anyone's typed anything
(usually they haven't), which means there's no way for us to
really send out important, timely alerts, to employees.

I realize the systray can flash for some of these events,
but that is completely unnoticeable and not specific on >
800x600 resolutions, as far as everyone I've ever spoken
with is concerned.

As another feature requestor reported, "Chat isn't very
useful if you always have to go back to check to see if
there are new messages." This is true for a very large
number of gaim users -- note that every single IRC or chat
client I can think of has a way of signaling activity in a
given channel (mIRC turns the tab red with the option to
flash taskbar, BitchX has notification options, etc.)

Thanks so much for your time. GAIM is a great example of a
useful, highly adaptive open source project/product and the
new beta is very impressive!

Additional thought on representing this sort of thing in the UI:
Contact is dimmed in the list on a scale. Clear, bright,
etc, they can talk to you normally.
A bit dimmer, they can't make stuff flash / beep / whatever.
Even more faded out and kind of hard to see, they can't open
new windows and get told to sod off, you're busy.

To set up everything from scratch, it'll really annoy me.
I'm lazy and don't do these things - I don't even have any
custom away messages for GAIM, because i'm too busy doing
everything else at the same time to set them up.

Right now in GAIM you can drag and drop people/groups about.
This is a great feature, for list sorting. I've just been
looking at stuff like http://www.dontclick.it/ which has
made me start thinking about alternative ways to do UI stuff.

Sub idea:
The buddy list has an "i'm annoying" section. You get to be
able to pick up and drop in the box/section to muffle the
flashing / message notification / etc.

The satisfaction, as an end user, of being able to feel like
I'm *actually* picking someone up and throwing them into the
"ssh" section would be a good stress relief.
