Connecting to chatrooms (ICQ, AOL,...)

I am unable to connect to any chatrooms on ICQ, AOL, or Yahoo (known bug) using pidgin 2.1.1 on Windows XP Pro SP2.

Has anyone confirmed that chatrooms using any protocol(s) is working? If so, will you please send me room details (any protocol)? I am writing a libpurple chatroom client, so I want to debug Pidgin to get the proper calls; unless there is a simple "how to" out there.

Also, does anyone know if the ICQ rooms hosted at: http://www.icq.com/ should be accessible by pidgin. If so, sample connection info (e.g. room name and exchange) would be greatly appreciated.

Minimizing or iconifying a window is really the job of your window manager so
if you want a shortcut for that look there first, the benefits of this are that
it will work on any window and not just pidgin windows.

I finally got the approval to install Ubuntu on my work machine, don't laugh,
it was hell to get my supervisor to understand why I didn't want a Windows machine,
but know I am using GAIM for my IM needs, is they a plugin that hides conversation
windows with a shorcut key.

Hello,

I've tried resizing one image for 80x80, change the extension (png -> png) and
I can't put one simple avatar to work using jabber (google talk) on this version
(2.0.0 beta6), only on msn network.

PS: Works as well one 2.0.0 beta5 version...

Gaim can't resize this automagic?

Ok. For the record, then, with Yahoo manually ordered first, and the buddy
idle on both Yahoo and GTalk, GTalk is still used by default. I'd even say
that when my buddy is actually Active on both, GTalk is still being used, but
I can't swear to that. In this case, both me and my buddy are on the 2.0 beta
6. FWIW.

No, you can't control the colors that gaim uses for the other people in a chatroom
without messing with the source and recompiling.

I don't understand that browser bit, if you mean not full width browser window
with your conversation window behind it and the tabs just fitting in the space
consider using side-tabs in gaim.

As to the tarball winrar can probably do it, winzip can, powerarchiver can,
and you can always get the files themselves directly from the sf viewsvn or
the pidgin viewmtn.

Sorry for so many questions, but in a chat, is there anyway to change the color
of the other sn's in it?It's hard to differentiate between the people now. I
have about 4 friends I'm normally in one with, with the aliases, so at a glance
I just see a bunch of "b" starting names (including my own, though in blue)
in green. Thanks, and again, sorry for so many questions/complaints.

Ah...main reason I don't like the tab thing is I got used to being able to see
if someone was typing with my not-quite-full-screen browser set-up. Ah well.
As for the buttons underneath, I've already gotten used to that, to some extent.
Still annoying, but not as much. And I thought about the tarball, but I'm running
on Windows and don't know how exactly TO extract it.

The visual order does control that but only to an extent, the relative 'availability'
of the buddies also factors in, pidgin attempts to give you the best shot of
actually reaching your buddy and the assumption is that all else being equal
the most active account is likely to be where they actually are. There is a
plugin (that doesn't build by default but is in the source) that allows you
to tweak some of the settings which control how these calculations work. I wrote
the plugin a long time ago and haven't played with it much since, so whether
it builds cleanly at the moment I'm unsure but it shouldn't be hard to fix if
it doesn't.

If you want the 1.5.0 sounds download the files from the 1.5.0 source tarball,
extract them somewhere, and then point gaim at them (you can do that in the
preferences). What options "that were under where you typed"? The large buttons
in the bottom of the conversation window? What 'options' there do you want back,
and why do you want them back? If those are what you mean then you are clearly
aware that they are in the menus but you may not be aware that you can easily
add shortcut keys to any menu item in gaim by hovering your mouse over the item
and hitting the key you want bound to it (if that doesn't work you will need
a gtkrc setting that the example gtkrc file linked from the FAQ has information
about).
The tabs being full width is an issue that has been discussed to death and virtually
everyone gets used to it in rather short order (and most come to like it better
than the old way in fact). There was just a patch posted somewhere to add the
ability to switch back but I don't know if it will be considered, I would tend
to doub it since there were real reasons for the switch in the first place.

When grouping multiple IDs for a contact under a single "meta-contact", I would
like to be able to specify which service takes precedence. I thought I could
do this simply by ordering the contacts, but for some reason people whom I have
on both Yahoo and Gtalk insist on using the Gtalk ID unless I explicitly select
the Yahoo one, despite the fact that the Yahoo IDs are listed first.

Is there any way to accomplish what I want here? Thanks.

Short directions on changing GTK+ theme: download the GTK+ Theme Switcher from
http://members.lycos.co.uk/alexv6/ and then use it to change the GTK+ Theme.
Someone should put that link somewhere prominent, I'm sure a lot of people ask
about changing themes. (Oh, by the way, I think that program's just for Windows,
I'm not sure what your platform is.)

I recently got 2.0beta6, like others, because I wanted to be able to use my
MSN again. But, one thing that keeps bugging me is the sound...I liked the 1.5
sound, but the 2.0 is too...light, I can't hear it enough. Then the smaller
things like what happened to the options that were under where you typed (I
know where they are, but is there a way to put them back where they used to
be?) and how it doesn't give a new window for new mail (I use that a lot with
forums to know when someone replied to something. That, and the tab buttons
just bug me because they're not the uniform size and stretch, but I can get
used to that of course. Thanks for any help, and sorry for such a long/picky/finicky
post. Thanks again for any help.

I'm seeing this same problem with 2.0.0 beta 6 on Solaris 9/Sparc,
and have seen it with previous 2.0.0 betas as well, i.e., I don't think
it's something in just beta 6.

One possibility that's occured to me is that perhaps file reception
requires a port/protocol combination that's blocked at the DSL
router/firewall I'm using -- however, I've been unable to locate
a writeup on Yahoo-based file transfer that lays out, step by step,
in full detail, exactly how it works, so at the moment it's unclear
to me whether this is the cause. But if it is, then this isn't a gaim/pidgin
issue, it's a network configuration issue.

I am using Gaim v1.5.1cvs with Mepis 6.0 Linux. My kids use YMessenger with
Windoze. The problem I'm having is with sending files. I can send a file to
my kids but when they try to send me a file, the send file button on their YMessenger
is greyed out and they get a message saying that the version of messenger I
am using does not support that feature and that I should upgrade to the newest
version of YMessenger. I do not want to try one of the newer beta versions of
Gaim unless it is known for sure that it would solve my problem as the version
I have installed works very well.

Anyone know?

I was having this problem yesterday, but with ICQ instead of Yahoo! It cleared
itself up after a few hours. Rebooting your PC might fix it as this is a windows
error, but I'm not sure.

Hi!
my problem is that msn emoticons sometimes are difficult to read because people
using msn live use they to write a word....
so want to remove their icon and see only the text...how to do this????

Can someone please give a fairly step by step way to change the themes on Gaim,
or more so GTK. i downloaded pne and put it in the themes directory but do not
know how to install it.

do i need to compile it or something... sort of new at this, just mucking around

The Linux build was released for Pidigin 2.x ... there's still a need for the
win32 build. Anyone w. the expertise is able to help rebuild this plugin for
the windows platform (via either via Cygwin or MinGW)???

Thanks for the reply, was starting to think that I was all alone in this great
big world. If I knew how to make skins I would be all over making one. However
programming is not really my thing. Customer Service and getting things sold,
I am your guy.

This is only one thing that I miss in Pidgin that I would love to have and that
is a "IM Everywhere" plugin. I used this in Trillian and it worked really well.
I set up a 3rd level domain and I could chat from anywhere and keep all my logs
and chats in one place. Currently I am logging into Meebo to use my messengers
away form home, Downside is my alias don't transfer and my chat logs are now
in 2 different places. Maybe one day.

Sorry for the delayed response. The development team doesn't check this forum
normally anyway, but all activity is moving over to a new website with the recent
name change.

Re: your comments:
For your newsletter, I think it's a great idea personally, but I am not on the
development team for Pidgin. I would recommend, though, that you wait for the
2.0 version release which should be happening sometime "soon". By that point
the new site (www.pidgin.im) should be in better order and you can ask for permission
there. There are also mailing lists you could try if you want to look for permission
/ recommendations now.

1. I don't know, sorry.
2. If you don't already have GTK+ (for example if you have Gimp installed) then
make sure you get the .exe that includes GTK+. Otherwise you don't need anything
else, no. You may want to get some plugins later also, but those aren't
required.
3. There are a couple included, you have to rerun the installer to switch skins.
But I don't think any of them are really particularly "micro" like you are looking
for. Hopefully someday there will be a Windows native client, but until somebody
*ahem* creates one then what you see is pretty much what there is.

So I had GAIM and GTK (as well as Gaim-Encryption plug-in and GNU Aspell) installed
on a secondary drive (not the same one as XP) which died and is unrecoverable.
GAIM and GTK still show up in Add/Remove Programs, but when I try to uninstall
them, since they're looking for the uninstall scripts on the dead drive, I get
an error.

If I try to reinstall GAIM w/GTK it doesn't work, I get all sorts of DLL issues,
and my machine will not connect to the Internet at all -- had to use system
restore to get back to a functioning system.

So I assume I have to go into the Registry and strip out the GAIM and GTK entries?
Any guidance/tips on that? Thx. John.

For me the main problem with LCS seems to be, that you normally type your username
(firstname.lastname@...) and the IP Address (or hostname) of the server,
where the LCS is running on.
But the GUI of GAIM tells me, that it tries to connect as 'username@server'.
And this seems to be impossible.
