Galeon refusing to launch

On one of my Fedora 8 machines, Galeon kept showing only a cutout
of the desktop I had just come to it from, and letting it sit while I
used another machine didn't help.

I finally closed it, and now it won't launch.

There are no huge cruft files in .galeon.

I ran 'yum remove galeon' followed by 'yum install galeon' -- the
biggest hammer I know. No joy.

Trying to launch it from gnome-terminal, I get this :

[btth@topblack ~]$ galeon &
[1] 16844
[btth@topblack ~]$ ps ax|grep galeon
 2788 ?        Sl   427:09 galeon --sm-config-prefix /galeon-pE6WP1/ --sm-

[btth@topblack ~]$ kill 15032
[btth@topblack ~]$ kill 15080
[btth@topblack ~]$ kill 15090
[btth@topblack ~]$ kill 15888
[btth@topblack ~]$ kill 15989
[btth@topblack ~]$ kill 16002
[btth@topblack ~]$ kill 16844
[btth@topblack ~]$ galeon &
[2] 16885
[1]   Terminated              galeon
[btth@topblack ~]$

What can I do? Galeon runs fine on other F8 machines.

I've got galeon refusing to start because of a broken bookmarks file,
once. Found out what line in the file was broken and galeon could then
start normally.

Well, I had an awful time finding an app that would open
a .galeon bookmark file; and when that succeeded, I realized it was going
to be a huge job looking for anything obviously wrong anywhere.

But I remembered that I have plenty of other browsers, and Galeon
isn't the one I keep my main stash in.

So I started sending whole bookmark files to the trash.
Eventually I had trashed them all -- and the result is still the same.
Clicking the launcher in the drawer puts a little box on the panel which
says (if you put the cursor over it) "Starting Galeon," or words to that
effect.

After a few seconds, the little box goes away. And that's the end
of that.

I finally deleted all bookmark files I could find for Galeon,
both in .galeon and in .mozilla; rebooted; immported my main stash from
Opera into Konqueror; and re-imported them all from there to Galeon,
which had indeed launched after the reboot.

I'll have to reconstitute my last session -- or a new standard
session -- as best I can; but I *have* Galeon again.

Anybody knnow a way to guard against this happening again??
