Garland controversy?

Seems the authors of Garland (the new default theme for Drupal) are a
little upset[1] about WP porting it for WP.com[2]. Steef (one of the
authors) came in and made a big stick in #wordpress just a few minutes
ago (I have a log if anyone wants to see it). They're really upset
about this. I was just wondering what Matt and Co. had to say about?

You can tell them that three days later, this is already old news. :)

Matt has apologized for any branding and linking confusion and announced
that the theme will be disabled until after the Drupal 5.0 release and
Drupal.org has acknowledged this and Matt confirmed it on their site.

My question is if the WP port will be made available for download sometime
later.

Matt's on top of all this and has done the right thing.

It's a lesson to all of us though, that when we port/convert something, it
is a REALLY good idea to give the original author one more review before it
goes live.  In the GPL world, you don't have to agree to everything the O.A.
says, but it will help you avert (or prepare for) any nasties like this
coming down the road...

I guess someone didn't get the memo then. The guy came into IRC really
peeved. Someone asked what Garland was after Steef asked if anyone
knew about the situation and he immediately responded with:

[12:19] <Steef> the new main drupal theme which I designed, and some
moron ported to WP before we could even release a version of drupal 5
[12:19] <Steef> that is what Garrland is

Pretty bad attitude the whole time he was there. *shrugs*

The attitude really does leave a poor taste in my mouth. I know it's
not *exactly* the same situation, because Drupal doesn't offer a
hosted service like WordPress.com, but I don't recall anyone in the WP
camp raising a big fuss whenever Kubrick was ported to Drupal.

Anyway, kudos to Matt and crew for doing "the right thing" - it really
is disturbing though to have them fuss so much.

Though not directly involved, a couple of days ago it seemed things were OK.

I had already planned on visiting my Bryght / Drupal friends at their
office in Vancouver on Monday, so I imagine I will get some additional
insights then.
