Exact versions: I'm not sure, running Ubuntu 8.10 and haven't changed
anything

$ ps jaxwww | grep gconf
21338 21339 21338 21338 ?           -1 S     1000   0:00
/usr/lib/pulseaudio/pulse/gconf-helper
    1 21341 21335 21335 ?           -1 S     1000   0:01
/usr/lib/libgconf2-4/gconfd-2
29590 29621 29620 29590 pts/1    29620 S+    1000   0:00 grep gconf

Neither gconf-sanity-check-1 nor gconf-sanity-check-2 work

As I said, I am running Ubuntu 8.10.  Any help or a point in the right
direction would be great.  Thanks for the help
