Switching from the GeoTools list to the uDig list...
I've checked out the uDig trunk code, and was quite amazed by the number
of plugins it has.
I haven't heard from Jesse yet (or from his student), but I still have
to delve a bit deeper into the code anyway before I can safely say it is
useful for me.

I assume that the code you were talking about, is in the "catalog.wms"
plugin ?? If not, redirect me pls :-)

I will need to dig up the details for you tomorrow; right now the code
is in uDig trunk and is used for our WMS-C support. A SoC student
extended this work to support many other tile formats;  and his mentor
Jesse Eichar intends to bring it back into the project.

Jesse if we can find a home for this work in GeoTools my preference
would be to combine forces with Pieter here.

Would it be possible for me to have a look at it, and decide whether or not

Hi Pieter,
I didn't follow the discussion on geotools list, but I assume you are
talking about the work of Tobias Sauerwein.

It is not in the udig core, but you can find his summer of code report
page here: http://udig.refractions.net/confluence/display/COM/Final+Summary+Report

and his code here: http://github.com/tosa/wmt

Ciao
Andrea

Hi,

I am recently back from vacation and want to integrate the SOC work with udig trunk ASAP.  I am a little overwhelmed at the moment but will get to this as soon as possible.

The code is on github: http://github.com/tosa/wmt if you want to take a look before I have time.

Just for your info, I downloaded the code and loaded it into udig M8,
and it works as it should. Very nice!
Going to show it at the next days meeting.

Thanks Jesse; you will also note the interest in setting this up as a
geotools module. Something for after it has been brought home to trunk
I guess.

I've tested it together with 1.2M6SDK and it works perfectly in my

After a while working with OSM in my application I got

!ENTRY org.eclipse.ui 4 0 2009-11-12 13:06:05.218
!MESSAGE Unhandled event loop exception
!STACK 0
java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: PermGen space

Because i started my application out of eclipse and haven't changed
anything except adding these plugins and using OSM I assume that there
is a memory leak or the memory consumption is too high for my settings.
Task manager reports 315MB. Doing all the same actions (zoom, pan, ...)
in my application without OSM and just relying on a local WMS the
application never exceeds 240MB.

Has someone else tested it?
Cheers, Matthias

Matthias:

There are two ways to use it - caching tiles in memory; or caching them on disk. I recommend the second. You can change what is used (and how many threads grab tiles) using a preference page.

For a video of how to change look at this: quick start.htm

Thanks for the link. Much better!
Nevertheless the cache should stop caching before running out of memory
;-) (just thinking of WeakReference).
