A 1GB GeoTiff file needs to be processed to get good performance, in
particular it needs to have both internal tiling and overviews.
If you don't have both of them accessing it might be very slow

There is no geowebcache-servlet.xml for the embedded version, it's
optional to have geowebcache.xml.

Im using GS 1.7.4 war deployed on Tomcat, I want to start using GeoWebCache! I`m going through the turtorials but I cant seem to find the gwc folder and geowebcache-servlet.xml file

performance affected after uploading geoTiff

Hi list,

I just uploaded a geoTiff of size 1.01 Gb, now the problem is that GS response has slowed down and at times the image is not displayed at a random scale, the file has been uploaded with default settings, any idea what I might be doing wrong here,Im calling the image through WMS service through URL which has other layers in it aswell

Yes.

(0) Stop Geoserver.
(1) Edit WEB-INF/web.xml
(2) Locate the section (commented to disable it) that sets
GEOSERVER_DATA_DIR.
(3) Uncomment it.
(4) Set the <param-value> to the base directory of your new data
directory location.
(5) Move your data directory to the new location. The default data
directory is called "data" and is in the same folder as WEB-INF
(6) Start GeoServer.

can we change data directory path?

Hi,

I have this small problem related to storage space, is it possible to set a data directory outside GS? or do i need to move the whole thing to a bigger storage ?

The wrapper uses Jetty, and does not require Tomcat. But this is not the
cause of your problem (see below).

As an aside received wisdom is that:
Tomcat 5.5 - > Use Java 5
Tomcat 6 -> Use Java 6
This is also no the cause of your problem (see below).

It looks like JAVA_HOME is not set. Please check your environment variables.

Did you install the Java 6 JRE? (It should come with the JDK.) I would
expect that the Sun Java 6 installer would install the JDK, JRE, and set
JAVA_HOME, if you ran it with its default options.

You could try manually setting JAVA_HOME so that %JAVA_HOME%\bin\java
points at the Java 6 version.

As far as I see there are some jars missing in your maven repository. You

OK, the problem seems to be in the geotools code. The XSD says that the typeName is of type QName but the getProperty function in org.geotools.wfs.bindings.QueryTypeBinding expects it to be a String:

installation problem

Hi List,

On a new machine, I installed JDK 6, Apache Tomcat 5.5.28 and Geoserver 2.0.
Geoserver does not start. The wrapper.log is at the end of this message.

If I run the command in a dos box I get:

GeoServer datastore with UNC path in Windows server

GeoServer users,

I have a problem with GeoServer 1.7.6.
We use GeoServer on Windows 2003, and want to store our data on external server, accessible via a UNC path.
So I want do define my datastore (directory of Spatial Files) as:

file://nldbcro04/data/shapefiles

This results in an error:

"given parameters couldn't be used" (in dutch but the
english one should roughly look like that).

Anyone a idea how to solve?

Invalid URL

When I try to load a TIFF file into a Coveragestore within GeoServer, I received an 'Invalid URL' message. When I opened the GeoServer command line window, I noticed the following messages corresponding with the time of attempted upload.

1) ‘no context parameter, system, or java environment variables found for GEOSERVER_WMS_URL’

2) ‘no context parameter, system, or java environment variables found for GEOSERVER_WFS_URL’

3) ‘Rule *.*.r=* is overriding another rule targeting the same resource’

4) ‘Rule *.*.w=* is overriding another rule targeting the same resource’

Anyone have any insights as to what is going on?

Using JPEG files to create GeoServer maps

I am trying to create interactive maps of the City of Douala with GeoServer - the idea being that I overlay maps of the city onto either a Google Earth or Google Map layer and enable the viewing public to click on various points of the map to obtain information (like photographs, data tables, etc.) about a particular spatial image.

However, I have experienced some difficulty in getting this project off the ground. To start, my boss has given me eight JPEG files (which are maps of varying scales of the City of Douala) accompanied by an XLSX file containing information about various quarters of the city (including area in square metres, acres, and the length of the perimeters of each quarter in metres). It is my understanding that JPEG files are only supported as an output format with GeoServer, so I downloaded a copy of ImageConverter and converted the eight JPEG files into PNG files. I also converted my XLSX file to an XML file, as I observed that all default coverage data in GeoServer is accompanied by XML files.

Upon making this conversion, I tried to create coverage stores for each of my PNG files, but every attempt failed (I received error messages attesting that I entered an Invalid URL). I then converted my original JPEG files to TIFF files and tried to load these into a GeoServer coverage store, but these attempts failed as well (I received error messages identical to those received for the PNG files). It was at this point that I began searching for explanations as to why my relative file path wasn't working (as I had followed steps identical to those of the GeoServer online tutorials and had no problems loading my data). My difficulties brought me to Nabble, and after reading numerous posts, I felt that downloading and installing the Imageio-extension for GeoServer 1.7.3 to try and add a coordinate system to my TIFF files was the solution to my problem. Unfortunately, the installation of this extension was an unmitigated disaster - and for awhile, everytime I tried to open the GeoServer admin page I received an HTTP 503 error message (although I've rectified this problem, but am still without the Imageio-extension).

In the light of all that I have stated above, can somebody please answer me this question: Is it possible to take a JPEG file accompanied only by an XML file, and use these to produce an interactive map via GeoServer? If not (and I'm assuming/hoping the answer is no), what steps must I undertake to get my project off the ground? (i.e. what file formats must I use, how do I go about completing the conversions, do I have to create any other files? etc.). In other words, is it possible to create an interactive map with GeoServer given the data I have at present? Also, is it easier in the long run to simply buy ArcView 9.3.1 and convert my JPEG map images to PNG, TIFF etc. and create accompanying PRJ, TGW, META files to accompany these maps? Hopefully you can help me out here, as I'm starting to give up hope with this whole ordeal. Finally, please try to make your explanation very simple, as I'm not a computer/software guru, and find concepts that you find ridiculously simple to be obtuse. Anyways, hope to hear from you soon.

You can, but they are handled independently. Joining support will
be part of the next WFS specification, which has still to be released

At the moment there is no way to a join.

We all just run "mvn eclipse:eclipse" and then import the resulting
projects. As far as I know it works for everybody here.

Multi-layer Filter

Hey guys,

My question doesn't have much to do with GeoServer, but since I don't know wherelse I could ask it, and you people have lots of experience with GIS-development, maybe you know a way out of this.

I want to do an OGC-Filter corresponding to a basic SQL JOIN statement, like:

SELECT A.*, B.* FROM A,B WHERE A.id=B.id

I know a GetFeature Request, can retrieve multiple typenames.

I also read the specification of OGC Filter Encoding and all filters have the following pattern:

PROPERTY - OP - "LITERAL"

Although I want to achieve something like:

PROPERTY - OP - PROPERTY

Do you guys know anything that already implements this?

I import the geoserver to eclipse IDE, and after I run "mvn clean install -Dmaven.test.skip=true", it works fine, but in my IDE,it seems that the generated sources by javacc under the module wcs11 are not used.

And in the pom.xml I see this"

I tried recreating similar config and data with properties file.

It works for me though, when I use URN form for the CRS, I get the output in reversed axis order, but no error.

Using normal EPSG form also works.

I don't know if this helps, but maybe you can try resetting the EPSG database?

I think I know what the problem is, but I'm still investigating.

I suspect it might be an axis ordering issue, as your default srs name is in URN format: urn:x-ogc:def:crs:EPSG:4326.

If you try to query with the same srsname (http://services.usgin.org/PolygonMappedFeature/wfs?request=GetFeature&typename=gsml:MappedFeature&maxfeatures=10&srsname=urn:x-ogc:def:crs:EPSG:4326),

you'll get the same error.

Using the plain SRS name (EPSG:4326) implies a different axis ordering though, which works.

I'm still looking at this and will get back to you.

In my PostGIS database, the public.geometry_columns table lists the column for my polygon features as 4326. I'm not exactly sure what you meant by it being registered in the database metadata. Is there anywhere other than this table that the geometry column should be listed?

Thanks for pointing out that results are returned when the query specifies the spatial reference. This will help satisfy the powers-that-be in the short term.

Rini: perhaps the simple feature [the type operated on by app-schema] has no geometry descriptor? Ideas?

This bit only gets used if reprojection is in use, so it looks like GeoServer thinks this type is not EPSG:4326 by default, so specifying EPSG:4326 works around the problem.

Ryan:

(1) What is the SRS in the <srs> element of your featuretype.xml for gsml:MappedFeature?

(2) What is the SRS of the geometry column in the database? Is it registered in the database metadata (geometry_columns [PostGIS] / user_sdo_geom_metadata [Oracle])?
