Getting Started - Need somebody to point me in the right direction pleaseJust installed hercules-3.06-leopard.dmg.
I guess the hercules.cnf depends on the OS I run. So where do I get one? What is closest to z/OS and where do I get a starter hercules.cnf? Thanks - Stefan |

Legal or illegal? Illegal I think you can get OS/390 ADCD from emule and other places. Not sure if z/OS is also available. I've never bothered to check. There's virtually no traffic about it in the Hercules groups. Legal - MVS/380 comes closest thanks to its ability to run 31-bit programs using more than 16 MB. Most public development chatter in the Hercules forums is regarding efforts to bridge gaps between it and z/OS. You can get that from http://mvs380.sourceforge.net It is based on Turnkey-3, which is probably the most popular legal distribution in use (silent majority if you will). If you're using Windows, you can use tk3qstart to assist with the installation process. See recent traffic in this group for the location. It depends what you're after. Do you want to program in C? You will need a 31-bit system to compile large C programs. 24-bit will work fine for small programs. If you want to learn DB2 or ISPF programming or something like that, then the legal OSes are useless. If you like the idea of raising the un-dead, then the legal OSes are a hell of a lot of fun. BFN. The problem is that IBM has not made its mainframe OSes available for individual use except by remote access to their datacenters at high cost. There's not much any of us can do about that. Please don't run down the hard work of others who are doing their best to make some subset of the tools available to the individual developer. -- Jay Maynard, K5ZC http://www.conmicro.com http://jmaynard.livejournal.com http://www.tronguy.net http://www.hercules-390.org (Yes, that's me!) Re: Re: Getting Started - Need somebody to point me in the right direction pleaseHey, not running down anything intentionally. Wasn't aware that none
of the older versions weren't available to Joe Public, thought I was likening one of them as "not the real thing". Re: Getting Started - Need somebody to point me in the right direction pleaseJay makes a good point - there is an incredible amount of time that people have spent on this project.
I certainly do respect them for it. --- On Mon, 10/12/09, Stefan <safendoulis@...> wrote: From: Stefan <safendoulis@...> Subject: [hercules-390] Getting Started - Need somebody to point me in the right direction please To: hercules-390@...
