Getting to grips with PlasmoidsIf KDE 4 still feels strange to you, UserBase now has a treat in store. Hans
(aka Mogger, on IRC) has created a whole set of short looping screencasts that show you exactly how to do all the common tasks associated with Plasma - covering desktop and panel widgets, extenders and activities. Each one lasts only a few seconds, but because it loops you have plenty of time to see exactly what is happening. Find them at http://userbase.kde.org/Plasma/FAQ/HowTo In case you didn't already know, there are already http://userbase.kde.org/Plasma #a general introduction http://userbase.kde.org/Plasma/FAQ #now updated to 4.3 http://userbase.kde.org/Plasma/Plasmoids #a few of our favourite plasmoids. Why not add your favourites? Anne -- New to KDE4? - get help from http://userbase.kde.org Just found a cool new feature? Add it to UserBase |

I will check it out. I have stayed away from KDE4 because of the plasmoids. Looks like a steep learning curve for an old man. Gary |

There are a few minor things that 3.5 had that are still not there, but I think it's true to say that all the things that are widely used are now possible. UserBase is searchable (though it doesn't like short terms like 'pdf', which we are trying to get fixed) and I'm always happy to help. I guess that is something I have been struggling with in KDE4. I just haven't found anything that I like, to replace it, and that has the same functionality. Rick Kunath |

Gkrellm works perfectly with KDE4 on 2009.1, although you may have to switch to the traditional desktop. I've never tried Gkrellm on the folder view desktop. Jim |

It's not as convenient as gkrellm. > Gkrellm works perfectly with KDE4 on 2009.1, although > you may have to switch to the traditional desktop. I've never tried > Gkrellm on the folder view desktop. (Slight confusion there - the folder-view desktop is the traditional one.) I run gkrellm on the standard Plasma desktop. James' message implies that he runs it on the folder-view desktop, so I guess that means that you can run it whichever you prefer ;-). I should have written "standard" and not "traditional". Like you I use the standard plasma desktop and not the folder view desktop. Jim |
