Gimp Windows Installer failure

Hello,

I just wanted to install Gimp on my computer for the first time.
I tried 2.4.6, 2.4.5 and 2.2.17.
In all cases I got the same installer message:
"Internal error: failed to get version numbers of _shfoldr.dll."
I could not find a DLL with this name on my system.
Any hints for me what to do?

Thanks.
Jan

Jan:

I am new to GIMP and this list, but did you see the previous posts about anti virus software and the problems it caused for installation? Some found it necessary to disable their AV software until after the program was installed.

Good luck - J. Ross

Thanks,

that was exactly the problem.
I do not use Norton, in my case Kaspersky interfered.
But why these cryptic misleading messages...??

Update your antivirus definitions, it should be fixed by now.

The AV was pulling rug from under the installer, and the installer reported
what happened to it as best as it could in an otherwise impossible
scenario.

Kaspersky reportedly quarantined Windows Explorer as a virus.  I would
dump it in favor of McAfee.

McAfee and Norton are the worst of the bunch. The rest aren't much better,
but nothing is as bad as Norton and McAffee.

I've been using McAfee for years and never had a speck of trouble with
interference with installs.  Norton, on the other hand, was far too
intrusive with normal operations and I dumped it.  I can imagine it
would play havoc with an installer.  Kaspersky's problems are well
documented. It recently locked up a friend's computer.

If you insist on paying for an anti-virus program I suppose you could
do so.

I've used AVG's free AV software for years, and love it. I install it
on every friend's PC who asks my opinion, gladly killing off Norton
and McAfee.

Between AVG and the Zone Alarm (also free) firewall, I'm amply protected.

That, and I stay away from Russian pRon sites..

I don't pay for McAfee. It's provided by my ISP. ;-)
