>> The attached patch adds "install-pdf" support to GCC. The pdf files are
>> currently installed in $(pdfdir), with $(pdfdir) determined by the
>> --with-pdfdir configure option if supplied, and otherwise defaulting to
>> $(docdir), which defaults to <installdir>/share/doc.
>
> Foreword: I know this is asking a lot more work than this. Would you
> have time to investigate instead switching to automake 1.10 (should be
> no big deal) and autoconf 2.61? This would provide the same effect that
> you have here. In addition, we wouldn't add another --with-pdfdir
> option that is there only to be deprecated when we switch to the newest
> autoconf.

As Joseph said, upgrading autoconf/automake, while technically perhaps
not a big deal, requires a substantial amount of coordination among lots
of projects. (And see also the debates we had about requiring an
updated version of flex a month ago; I can see the same thing happening
here.) I don't think I could commit the time to try to navigate that
process within the next few months, at least.

And, also, switching to automake 1.10 doesn't actually duplicate as much
of this as one might hope. Of the directories touched by this patch
other than the top level, only nine (out of 25) are actually processed
by automake, and of those only one actually installs any pdf files; the
rest are trivial single-line patches. The remaining non-top-level
changes would need to be made regardless.

Your comment about the --with-pdfdir option is a good point, though:
Would it be more appropriate to name the option just --pdfdir, so that
it is consistent with what the more recent autoconf would produce, and
thus will not need deprecation after the switch? On the other hand,
--with-pdfdir is consistent with the other options that are currently in
configure.

Thanks,
- Brooks

Bleah. It works fine on my system, but apparently that's just luck -- I
missed including the new gcc-vers.texi dependency in gccinstall.* in the
Makefile, but on my system the "mv -f gcc-vers.texiT gcc-vers.texi" line
happens to get executed first anyway.

The attached patch ought to fix it; I've tested it on i686-pc-linux-gnu
(which unfortunately doesn't prove it fixes anything, because it worked
before, but at least proves it didn't break things), and committed it to
4.2 and trunk as obvious. (svn 122365 and 122366) Let me know if this
doesn't fix things.

For a change of this kind, I'd prefer Joseph to have a look as well,
so please give him a bit of time before checking this in.

(Joseph, http://gcc.gnu.org/ml/gcc-patches/2007-02/msg01863.html has
the original patch.)

> As a documentation patch, should this also go into 4.2?

Yes, please!

As promised in my recent post to gcc-devel, the attached patch
standardizes all of the title pages in the texi documentation under the
gcc/ directory. (Note that this patch only changes the pdf and dvi
versions; it doesn't affect the info or html.)

The new standard is, for simplicity, the standard Texinfo format; I've
also put in a "For GCC version N.N.N" subtitle on each of the manuals.
In development versions of the compiler, it will say "For GCC version
N.N.N (pre-release)", making it easy to distinguish development from
release versions of the manuals.

I also stuck a table of contents into install.texi while I was
standardizing things, since it didn't have one. This, again, is set to
only affect the dvi and pdf output.

I don't know whether the list is still useful. So much
depends on how the community here relates to the gcc maintainers. I
understand most of their work appears on gcc-help (but I've been wrong
once or twice before).

I would propose moving to a "sign-up to post" policy for starters.
Spam and Virus filters wouldn't be a bad idea; a spam filter could
shunt the questionable posts aside for moderation.

As to that, I would volunteer for some moderation duties. Perhaps we
should talk off-list.

Greetings,

It appears that this mailing list, help-gnat@..., (among many others),
has no known owner/moderator, and accepts mail from non-subscribers.
The result is passing through of lots of spam.

So we need to do something. I'm writing to get input on the best thing
to do. Please reply to me if you have any thoughts on the following:

(1) If this list is obsolete and should be deleted. We'd keep the
archives, just make the address inactive, so any future mail to it
    would bounce.

(2) If the list is *not* obsolete, and should remain as a live address.
In many cases there is so much junk in the archives that it is hard
to tell, hence my query. In other cases, I could guess, but I felt
it would be best to just inquire about everything.

In case (2), if you can volunteer to help moderate the list (and/or
others!), that would be most appreciated. But even if not, I'd still
like to know if the list is still live; I'm recruiting volunteer
moderators to help with the job.

Any other information or suggestions is welcome too. For example, if
someone is already administering the list but just isn't listed in the
mailman interface.

Thanks much,
Karl
