NOTES:
======

   The Deskbar applet packaged with Tracker is currently out of date
   and needs some love to get it working with the new APIs. It is in
   the same state as it was for 0.6. As such it isn't expected to work.

Few changes in that release, except an improved handling of init scripts
priorities, which makes the gnome-system-tools 2.29.1 require it.

Liboobs 2.29.1, 2009-11-30
--------------------------

Liboobs version 2.29.1 "Not Yet!" has been released.

- Remember init scripts priority, allowing for GUIs not to care about
them, simply passing 0 to mean "previous".
- Don't allow clients to remove init scripts by setting their status to
"ignore": scripts should always use "start" or "stop" statuses, so that
their priority is not lost when disabling them.
- Print a warning to the console when asynchronous commit fails. This
ensures that errors will always be reported for debugging purposes.
-----------------------------------------------

  General
  =======
  - Enable Automake silent rules by default, and compiler warnings
  - Remove call to deprecated gdk_event_get_graphics_expose() (thanks to
Andre Klapper)

  Users
  =====
  - Complete rework of the user interface: settings are now shown in the
main dialog, with separate dialogs to edit them. Unlock button is gone,
replaced with on-the-fly authentication request when applying changes.
  - Login proposals are now shown when creating an user, with live
checking of forbidden characters, and transliteration from Unicode where
possible.
  - Fix GID wrongly set to 0 in group settings dialog, which could lead
to adding users to the root group
  - Add privilege groups from Debian (Sam Morris)
  - Always show system groups: "showall" GConf option is now only for

ANNOUNCE: Zeitgeist 0.3.0

Hi,

On behalf of the Zeitgeist team I am proud to announce our first
development release, Zeitgeist 0.3.0, leading up to what will be our
stable series which will be 0.4. It is our intent to aim for a 1.0
release as soon as we feel good about the stable series, but that is
still a bit in the future. Now that we've crossed the initial hurdle
in the rewrite we expect the release cycle to be much shorter than
this one, although we have not settled on something strict yet.

As many of you know the bulk work on this release was done in the
Zeitgeist hackfest in Bolzano. Since we came back we've been busy little
bees polishing it up and fixing bugs - trying not to flame each others
too much when discussing the designs :-) Working face to face in
Bolzano gave us a unique chance to really discuss things through and
get to the bottom of the details. This will also affect other
developers a bit since...

We were bad boys and decided to change both our internal database
structures as well as our public DBus API. Sorry - but after long
discussions we all agreed that this was for the best. The new design
is leaps and bounds better than the old one. This means that you both
have to give up on your old log database, and accept that there are no
GUI written for the new API just yet. This is being worked on as you
read this though!

Something that might come as a shock to some other developers is that
we decided not to store annotations and bookmarks within Zeitgeist.
This should be done in Tracker or some other semantic metadata
storage[1]. Zeitgeist answers only when and how data was accessed, but
stores no information about the current state of the metadata. We will
be working very closely with Tracker from now on since 0.7 is a
blessed dependency for GNOME 2.30. Congrats to the Tracker Devs.

You can download the release from: https://launchpad.net/zeitgeist/+download

The NEWS entry reads:

First development release leading up to the stable 0.4 series. This
release features:

- Complete rework of engine and DBus API. Read: apps written against 0.2.*
  will most certainly need an update (see fx.
  http://mail.gnome.org/archives/desktop-devel-list/2009-November/msg00019.html)
- Public Python client API defined in zeitgeist.datamodel and
  zeitgeist.client modules
- Documented public API with Sphinx (we'll have an URL for you shortly)
- Changed Ontology from XESAM to Nepomuk.
- Removed the Storm backend (obsoleted in 0.2.1).
- Removed the Querymancer backend.
- Support for event payloads (binary attachments to events)
- An extension API for the core engine, allowing extensions direct
access to the DB
  There are already a handful extensions things in the works here,
you will hear
  more about this later

There are a few DISCLAIMERS that needs to be attached to this:

- The event notification/signals are not yet ready in the new DBus API.
  We expect to have that ready for 0.3.1.
- We plan to support querying only for available items (eg. filtering out
  deleted files, not listing files on detached USB storage, etc.). However this
  feature is not fully supported yet, even though it is exposed in the API.
- While we are pretty satisfied with the database layout, there may still be
  changes in the ontologies or concrete data extraction methods. This might
  require that users delete their log databases in order to rebuild them
  with the new definitions. Of course this will no longer happen when we
  go stable
- Much related to the point above our event ontologies are not yet
set in stone,
  and minor changes are expected
- We have only one logger enabled for now. Namely the one monitoring your
  recent files. In coming releases this logger may well be deprecated in favour
  of application specific plugins.
- And finally. Please note that this is a *development release*. We can not
  guarantee stability of services nor APIs, although we strive hard to keep
  things stable.

Cheers,

Mikkel

[1]: There have been talk about defining (and implementing) a very
simple DBus API for storing semantic annotations (bookmarks, tags,
comments, ratings, etc). In our internal speak such a service is
called a Repository. Tracker or Soprano would expose this API in most
cases, but on platforms where they are not available the simple
Repository implementation would be most handy. This being said, it is
currently not a high priority to implement a Repository, there are
alternatives ready in Tracker and Soprano.

============

GTK+ is a multi-platform toolkit for creating graphical user
interfaces. Offering a complete set of widgets, GTK+ is suitable for
projects ranging from small one-off tools to complete application
suites.

GTK+ has been designed from the ground up to support a range of
languages, not only C/C++. Using GTK+ from languages such as Perl and
Python (especially in combination with the Glade GUI builder) provides
an effective method of rapid application development.

GTK+ is free software and part of the GNU Project. However, the
licensing terms for GTK+, the GNU LGPL, allow it to be used by all
developers, including those developing proprietary software, without
any license fees or royalties.

Where to get more information about GTK+

This is a development release leading up to GTK+ 2.20.

Notes:

* This is an unstable development release.
   It has had only little testing and there are unfinished
   features and plenty of bugs in this release. It should
   definitively not be used in production.

* Installing this version will overwrite your existing
   copy of GTK+ 2.18. If you have problems, you'll need
   to reinstall GTK+ 2.18.

* GTK+ 2.20 will be source and binary compatible with
   the GTK+ 2.18 series; however, the new API additions
   are not yet finalized, so there may be incompatibilities
   between this release and the final 2.20 release.

* Bugs should be reported to http://bugzilla.gnome.org.

What is GTK+
============

========================================

Information about GTK+ including links to documentation can be
found at:

http://www.gtk.org/

An installation guide for GTK+ 2.x is found at:
============

GTK+ is a large project and relies on voluntary contributions.
We are actively searching for new contributors in various areas
and invite everyone to help project development.
If you are willing to participate, please subscribe to the project
The 2.29.1 release is a unstable release of the GNOME Display Manager
(GDM) program with the following bug fixes and improvements:

- A new desktop extension is now supported in GDM session desktop files
   (normally found in /usr/share/xsessions). Setting the key to true as
   follows:

   X-GDM_BypassXsession=true

   will cause the Xsession script to not be used to launch the session.
   This can be useful if you want to create a "failsafe" xterm session.
   The Xsession script sources the user's $HOME/.profile, for example, so
   setting this key to true will ensure that any errors in the user's
   $HOME/.profile will not cause the session to fail to start.

- Fix makedist problem.
===============

AT-SPI2 is a D-Bus based accessibility framework. It defines a D-Bus
protocol for providing and accessing application accessibility
information. The project includes a library for bridging the D-Bus
protocol to the ATK API, allowing Gtk based applications to be made
accessible. It also contains a client (AT) side library in Python.

GLib 2.23.0 is now available for download at:

  ftp://ftp.gtk.org/pub/glib/2.23/
  http://download.gnome.org/sources/glib/2.23/

md5 sums:
470fbbc06d5fa70643777cec5b0edd4c03c7f05f  glib-2.23.0.tar.gz

This is the first development release leading up to GLib 2.24.

Notes:

* This is unstable development release. While it has had
  a bit of testing, there are certainly plenty of bugs
  remaining to be found. This release should not be used
  in production.

* Installing this version will overwrite your existing
  copy of GLib 2.22. If you have problems, you'll need
  to reinstall GLib 2.22.

* GLib 2.24 will be source and binary compatible with
  the GLib 2.22 series; however, the new API additions
  in GLib 2.23.0 are not yet finalized, so there may
  be incompatibilities between this release and the final
  2.24 release.

* Bugs should be reported to http://bugzilla.gnome.org.

About GLib
==========

GLib is the low-level core library that forms the basis for projects
such as GTK+ and GNOME. It provides data structure handling for C,
portability wrappers, and interfaces for such runtime functionality as
an event loop, threads, dynamic loading, and an object system.

More information about GLib is available at:

http://www.gtk.org/

An installation guide for the GTK+ libraries, including GLib, can
be found at:

http://developer.gnome.org/doc/API/2.0/gtk/gtk-building.html

Overview of Changes from GLib 2.22.x to GLib 2.23.0
===================================================

* GIO:
- GConverter: a generic interface for stateful conversions of data,
   suitable for charset conversion, compression, decompression, regexp
   replacement. Concrete implementations are GCharsetConverter,
   GZlibCompressor and GZlibDecompressor. GConverterInputStream,
   GConverterOutputStream are stream implementations that convert data
   while loading or saving it.
- GMounts can now have a 'default location': a path that reflects
   the main entry point for the user (e.g. the home directory).
- As a consequence of the compression support, GIO depends on zlib now.

* GObject:
- G_IMPLEMENT_INTERFACE_DYNAMIC: a convenience macro for adding
   interfaces to dynamic types.

* GModule:
- The -pthread flag has been added to all gmodule .pc files, because
   it is not generally permissible to load modules that are linked
   against libpthread if the program has not been compiled with
threading
   support.

* Bugs fixed:
601637 GUnixFDMessage should contain a GUnixFDList
585566 GSocketListener API issues

=======================
  What is mousetweaks ?
=======================

    The mousetweaks package provides the functions offered by the
    Accessibility tab of the Mouse control panel. It also contains
    two panel applets related to the mouse accessibility. More
    particularly:

     1. It offers a way to perform the various clicks without using any
        hardware button. In this context, the Dwell Click panel applet
        can be used to choose what click type to perform.
========

Java ATK Wrapper is a implementation of ATK by using JNI technic. It
converts Java Swing events into ATK events, and send these events to
ATK-Bridge.

JAW is part of the Bonobo deprecation project. It will replace the
java-access-bridge after being fully tested.
By talking to ATK-Bridge, it keeps itself from being affected by the

- Implement optional UPnP Search action. This is not only a must have feature
- Simplify Browse action handling.
- Simplify MediaServer plugin implementation.
- Make sure autostart dir exists before attempting to write to it.
- Fix a potential crash that is trigered by MediaContainer reporting incorrect
- External:
  - Work around (vala) bug#602003.

Vala Toys for gEdit can be downloaded at:
======================

* support for vala 0.7.8

Vala Toys for gEdit
===================

Vala Toys for gEdit is an experimental collection of plugins that
extends the gEdit editor to make it a better developer editor.

Vtg tries to make less compromises as possible so, for now, its scope is
narrowed only to support the Vala programming language.

Vtg is written in Vala itself and it is currently composed of just one
plugin with four modules and it adds to gEdit:

      * Bracket completion
      * Symbol completion
      * Project Manager - based on the gnome build framework library
      * Project build / execute
--------------------------

This release is a snapshot of development code. Although it is
buildable and usable, it is primarily intended for testing and hacking
purposes. GNOME uses odd minor version numbers to indicate
development status.
