If I can make a suggestion it would be nice if you could contact the
translators beforehand, so that we put a bit of pressure on the Gnome
lads to push the translations your way.

Hello everybody,

balsa-2.4.2 has just been released. It comes with improved library
compatibility (openssl, gtk, libnm, webkit) and works better under Mac
OS X.

- searching in HTML parts has been implemented.
- improved webkit support.
- NetworkManager events intercepted to reconnect to IMAP servers.
- compatibility with recent openssl.
- compatibility with gtk version >= 2.18
- improved Mac OS X integration.
- bug fixes!
- better translations!

Peter Bloomfield is the person who put most of the work in balsa

Tried to move data from Mbox to Mdir (these contain a lot of mail as
they are mailing lists containers) Problem solved.

it does it a lot I have lenghtened the time to close the mbox after
inactivity and that fixes it unless the time has passed I never notice
this before. I thought maybe it was a missed option

Off hand, I don't recall any change from 2.3.x to 2.4.1 that would slow down opening an mbox. Balsa uses a cache file to avoid parsing the whole mailbox--perhaps it was not found or not recognized. If that was the issue, it should open quickly again after that one slow opening--have you noticed that?

The odd thing is that whil in 2.3.8 opening the mailbox (mbox) now

Good news! The rendering problem is fixed in git master.

Another recent HTML change is the beginning of a text-search capability in
HTML message parts, using a WebKit option. You can find a string--but as
of now, the widget doesn't scroll to display the found text...still a work
in progress.

Gnome 2.28 changes

Hi All!

Gnome users should be prepared for some changes with version 2.28, in for
example Fedora 12. By default, icons are no longer shown on menus and in
dialog buttons. Furthermore, the System:Preferences:Appearance:Interface
tab has been removed, so you also no longer have a GUI for over-riding the
default.

Personally...well, I will censor my thoughts about this decision. The
main thing is, if you want to restore either, you can use the disastrous
gconf-editor GUI to over-ride it, or, if you don't have gconf-editor
installed (it doesn't seem to be part of the default install), the even
more obscure console command(s):

gconftool-2 -s /desktop/gnome/interface/buttons_have_icons -t bool true
gconftool-2 -s /desktop/gnome/interface/menus_have_icons -t bool true

I'm guessing the console messages include "Fatal IO error 11 (Resource
temporarily unavailable) on X server", which is what others and I have
seen.

I've no interest in starting a pissing match! But...Balsa can be built
with fewer dependencies than in the past. It's even usable on Mac OS-X!
In particular, it will build --without-gnome, and can use libunique to
enforce single-instances, instead of the (soon to be?) deprecated
BonoboActivation.

Could be. Xorg.log does not disclose anything, perhaps I need to set the debug level higher. Generally it dumps this stuff to console and there is a clear chain reaction (apps disappear one at a time suddenly) but balsa (or gkrellm...) is always first, and it is my impression that this does not happen when balsa is not running.

Keep in mind, as I said, my environment is very "non-standard" and did involve forcing some packages because the dependencies were source built (and probably not the same way as the corresponding package) so there is ample room for any number of complications. Which that is my problem more than yours!

Anyway, for now I am trying out sylpheed (gasp! sorry...) as it has fewer dependencies and was not intended for gnome integration, which is something I neither want nor need. But thanks for balsa, up to now it has served me well for years!

BTW, if 2.4.1 is the latest version, why does this homepage:

That's a new one to me! We've had several reports (and personal
experiences!) of recent Xorg causing Balsa to crash, but not of Balsa
causing Xorg to crash. Are there any hints in, for instance, Xorg.?.log
about the crashes?

Anyway, Xorg should be robust to misbehavior by a client--that has to be
an Xorg bug.

Yes--it looks as though you have GMime 2.4, and Balsa 2.3 requires GMime
<= 2.2. Try the Balsa 2.4.1 tarball from
<URL:http://pawsa.fedorapeople.org/balsa/download.html>, which does
require GMime 2.4.

2.3.28 is not the latest version. I'm using 2.4.1 under Gentoo, so it
was compiled on my machine with no problems, although not manually. It
might be worth trying a newer version.

building 2.3.28

I have been using balsa for few years -- the latest one, which came
with fedora 10-64, since January. However, it regularly (say once a
day if I leasve it on) causes X to crash. This is sort of okay, since
I do not need to leave it on all the time, and usually it is only a
small hassle to restart X.

However, it is starting to get slightly embarrassing as I am now
working with a vps server where I must maitain a persistant connection
to manage certian details -- if my connection is lost, the server must
shut down, meaning other users are also disconnected. This will happen
when X crashes, since the client at my end is a GUI. Even tho it may
only take me a minute or so to re-establish things, I have still
created a hassle for my users. So short of running two computers,
using my email is now a risky affair.

Also, I would like to use gtkspell, since currently I have no spell
checking at all in balsa. So I would much prefer to build from source,
which is what I do with a lot of software (I am a C programmer, I have
some gtk projects and my desktop at home is source built from gtk on
up, so using packages is sometimes awkward or undesirable). I believe
I tried to build balsa once or twice in the past and failed and just
left it at that, but I would really, really like it to work out since I
cannot find ANY other viable GUI email clients for linux. The latest
attempt was:

configure --enable-pcre --disable-static --without-gnome --with-gnu-ld
--with-gtkspell

and it crapped out here:

WebKit experiment on hold

Hi All!

Balsa has for some time included experimental code for using WebKit to
render HTML message parts, instead of GtkHTML-2 or -3. Recent versions of
WebKit (1.1.10+) have been causing hangs, which are fixed in git master,
but instead don't render anything. I've recently found some spam that
crashes earlier versions. So as of now we have no reliable way of using
WebKit in Balsa.

The rendering problem with recent WebKit does not seem to be a WebKit
bug--a simple test program uses it successfully. We'd welcome any
insights into why it doesn't work in Balsa!

Git master has been patched to not max out the CPU. In a few tests, it
still displays correctly with WebKit 1.1.10. With 1.1.12 and later, it no
longer hangs with the CPU pegged, but neither does it display the content
:(

There's a reason WebKit support is still labeled "experimental"!

Insights from anyone with experience with WebKit are invited.

to happen when new mail arrives at the same time I do
something that opens a window, like replying to an email
or, perhaps, composing a new email.

priority text for toolbar buttons is now implemented in git master.

However...the implementation follows the HIG recommendations
<URL:http://library.gnome.org/devel/hig-book/stable/toolbars-labels-tooltips.html.en>:
set priority text on the buttons that are most frequently used, and at
most four on any toolbar. I took a stab at deciding which buttons are
most frequently used--corrections and other suggestions welcome!

Ahhh...so it matches only if the X-MS-TNEF-Correlator header is among the
*top-level* headers--I was testing it with some old mail that I forwarded
to myself, and it was an *embedded* header.

Actually, looking for "winmail.dat" isn't really relevant, since using
that file-name isn't required. We should really check for an
"application/ms-tnef" mime part, so something like this is probably better:

The recipe above runs ytnefprocess.pl as a filter for every message
provided that it has X-MS-TNEF-Correlator header and its body contains
winmail.dat string. The exit result of yynefprocess.pl is checked and
the message is discarded if the message is nonzero.

I am not familiar with ypnetprocess.pl - maybe it returns non-zero exit
result?

The ytnef documentation (/usr/share/doc/ytnef-2.6/README) suggest to
use a basically identical rule:

If you want to use ytnefprocess.pl, then make sure to do the following:

1) Make a directory ~/.ytnef
2) Make a directory ~/.ytnef/output
3) Install the MIME::Parser perl module. You can do this with:
perl -MCPAN -e shell
(let it load)
install MIME::Parser
4) Copy ytnefprocess.pl & ytnef to a place like /usr/bin.
5) Create a .procmailrc something like this:

The f11 ytnef package contains a Perl filter, ytnefprocess.pl, which
appears to do what you want (except that it hard-codes an incorrect path
to the ytnef executable). Some Debian notes suggested that adding

to your .procmailrc would call it when necessary, but that's pure

Trash is pretty universal. I think Reply, ReplyAll, and Forward are
also, but I just noticed "Next Unread" is also an envelope with an
arrow, so maybe only a half vote here.
