==============

Evince is a document viewer. It primarily displays pdf, though djvu,
supported.
> Hi, sorry for the late reply.
>
>> i wrote a little patch that lets you open an encrypted file if another
>> file with the same password was opened (and the key saved in keyring)
>> before.
>> This works by iterating through all "Document File" entries in the
>> keyring. If the right password was found, it gets saved together with the
>> file uri the fasten up the next try to open that file.
>
> hmm, I'm not sure looking at passwords of *other* documents is a good
> idea.
>

Hi, thanks for your reply.

I think, that gnome-keyring was not made for this, but what, in general
is bad on that behavior? I don't see a better way for avoiding to retype
the passwords for my PDF's again and again. I periodically have to open
new files with always the same passwords (from University).
> since i knew Evince supports .cbz comicbooks i got really addicted to
> it - i can do my own presentations making a .zip of a folder having
> pictures inside, and forget 'powerpoint' existed anyway (
> http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/words-to-avoid.html#PowerPoint )

Nice to hear that !

> the problem is, recently, i found from a wikipedia page (
> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comic_Book_Archive_file ) that .cbt is
> also a comicbook format, based on libre and very well documented .tar
> format
>
> otherwise, Evince still only supports .cbz and .cbr formats, both
> based on proprietary (even available as libre) .zip and .rar formats
> as daily user,

AFAIK, the cbr format is the most popular format followed by cbz format.
Evince also support the comics book format cb7.

> it seems to be such a problem, but as a GNU/Linux user,
> it's weird seeing Evince not supporting .cbt format, and does so well
> on .cbz and .cbr formats (and it's wonderful it does, since they are
> very useful)

The patch is ready [1], but I want to review it to make sure it applies
flawlessly with the current master version to easier the work of the
maintainers. The basic reason for the delay is that it needs
share-mime-info support. I submitted a patch [2] for it that was applied
and published on version 0.70 [3]. This version of share-mime-info was
not supported on GNOME til the lastest development version 2.29.3 [4],
so I think we are now ready for applying the patch.

With this stuff and your interest I hope we have the chance for
inclusion of cbt support on this development cycle :)

hi!

since i knew Evince supports .cbz comicbooks i got really addicted to
it - i can do my own presentations making a .zip of a folder having
pictures inside, and forget 'powerpoint' existed anyway (
http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/words-to-avoid.html#PowerPoint )

the problem is, recently, i found from a wikipedia page (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comic_Book_Archive_file ) that .cbt is
also a comicbook format, based on libre and very well documented .tar
format

otherwise, Evince still only supports .cbz and .cbr formats, both
based on proprietary (even available as libre) .zip and .rar formats

as daily user, it seems to be such a problem, but as a GNU/Linux user,
it's weird seeing Evince not supporting .cbt format, and does so well
on .cbz and .cbr formats (and it's wonderful it does, since they are
very useful)

i'd like to know further oppinions about this issue, and how scheduled
is the support of .cbt format on Evince

thanks and cheers,
Paulo
> Hi Jose,
>
> Since August or so Evince uses the gvfs metadata framework. I don't know
> too much about it -the gvfs metadata software for Evince doesn't work on
> my system-, but I think you can manage the metadata info with the family
> of gvfs command (on ubuntu/Debian this commands are installed with the
> gvfs-bin package)
>
> This link have some info about the use of metadata on Nautilus [1], it

i wrote a little patch that lets you open an encrypted file if another
file with the same password was opened (and the key saved in keyring)
before.
This works by iterating through all "Document File" entries in the
file uri the fasten up the next try to open that file.
Subject: [PATCH] shell, libview: new feature for password lookup

This patch introduces a new function to find a matching password to a
document by iteration through all existing passwords (for document files)
in the keyring.
Assume there are two ore more files encrypted with the same
password, we don't want to enter the password for every file we open.
First the old, direct password lookup using the file's uri is used. If this
wasn't successful, the new brute force function get called.
If a matching password was found (in the default keyring), the uri and
password of the file are being saved to speedup future lookups.

Hi,

I have noticed, that evince doesn't allow to use hyperlinks in dvi-files. Hyperlinks in pdf-files work fine. So i was wondering if there is an easy way to enable hyperlinks in dvi-files too.
I am using ubuntu 9.10 with gnome version 2.28.1.
> ===============================

hmm, of course I meant 2.29.1 rather than 2.27.91
> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8
>
> Hi Tobias,
>
> 2009/11/10 Tobias Koeck <tobias.koeck@...>:
> > Strangly does evince-gtk act differently than evince. Evince saves the
> > actual page and opens it after reopening.

Yes, saving metadata, like current page, requires dbus, and evince-gtk
is built without dbus support.

> I haven't worked on evince for a long time, please ask on
> evince-list@...
>

Hi Ankit,

Well, it is possible to write a program that use Evince, like the folks
of Sugar have done, however, for a good user experience it is necessary
to shrink the footprint of Evince for small devices like cellphones. The
bug #303365 [1] is one step on this direction. It is a hard bug to fix
but it is in our roadmap [2] (I'm not sure when it will be ready because
our scarce resources, but I'm pushing for this, though I'm not an
experienced developer)

Personally, I recently I adquired some interest on the mobile field, so
I'd like to see Evince on cellphones and I hope to work on this :)

Cheers,

Dear Evince developers,
I'm having a bad day. It's one of those Fridays. I'm a Lecturer, so a
lot of my job is preparing classes and class notes for students. Today
I did what I do most days of the week. I found some notes that needed
to be modified and modified them. I read through them on-screen just to
be sure that they were right. Then it occurred to me.
Every day I modify documents and every day I view them. Most hours of
the working day I open Evince and it lets me do my work. And thinking
more about it, Evince allowed me to view the text of my wedding
celebration when I got hitched. Evince allowed me to view and print my
flight details when flying home to see family. Evince allowed me to
print Cory Doctrow's "Down and out in the magic kingdom" with a two
pages per page and double-sided thus entertaining me and reducing
environmental waste.

Hi Tobias,

2009/11/10 Tobias Koeck <tobias.koeck@...>:
> Strangly does evince-gtk act differently than evince. Evince saves the
> actual page and opens it after reopening.

I haven't worked on evince for a long time, please ask on
evince-list@...

Thanks,
Martin

> What's the difference - how does it work?
>
> Greetings

The reply Roderich sent after your first message was valid (did you mean
page 39 in the document, or the page with "39" on it?) and formulated in
a friendly manner. As Peter pointed out with a supporting screenshot,
not everybody experiences the problem you described. Yes, screenshots
*do* help.

So, instead of insulting people by implying they are lazy (or stupid),
while in fact you were being lazy yourself, please come up with more
information and supporting evidence (a screenshot, for example) so that
the people who spend their (spare!) time diagnosing your problem don't
waste their time (mis)interpreting your vague description. (Or waste
their time sending messages like this.)

Oh, and please quote correctly next time. Thanks.

    — Wouter

Right...and in less time than it took for you *not* to do so, I found the
