I will add the plugin to the page you mentioned.

The plugin has 3 menu items, Record Macro, Stop Macro & Play Macro.
Record Macro starts recording of all the keys pressed in gedit.
Stop Macro stops the recoding of macro.
Play Macro then sends all the key events recorded in macro to the
gedit window again.
>
> This is what I tried:
>
> ui_str = """<ui>
> <toolbar name="ToolBar">
> </toolbar>
> </ui>
> """
>
> I'm based on the file browser plugin ui description. That is:
> <ui>
> <toolbar name="ToolBar">
> <placeholder name="Tool_Opt1"/>
> <separator/>
> <toolitem action="DirectoryRefresh"/>
> <separator/>
> <placeholder name="Tool_Opt2"/>
> <separator/>
> <toolitem action="FilterHidden"/>
> <separator/>
> <placeholder name="Tool_Opt3"/>
> </toolbar>
> ...
> </ui>
>
> I think that if I had the same UIManager as the plugin has, I could do this job. Is it possible to access the plugin's UIManager? Is there another way to edit this toolbar?
>
> Basicly no, you can't change that toolbar from another plugin like that. What we could do is expose this similarly to how you can extend the context menu of the file browser widget, namely using the message bus API. Then you could add/remove toolbar buttons. What do you want to use this for? Is it possible that you could the same with putting new items in the context menu (which is preferable)?
>
>
>
>

Hello,

This is regarding gEdit for Windows, version 2.28.0-1.
- on my dual screen system, the editor does not open up where I had it
placed last, on the second screen (even Notepad does that), but instead
on the first screen

probably a gtk+ problem

- the editor seems to have problems selecting entire "words"
that are made up of letters and numbers, e.g. "abc12de3f" -
double-clicking selects either the letters or the numbers, but not the
entire word (triple-clicking selects the entire row, so that is not the
answer either); again, that is something Notepad does not seem to have
a problem with

this is a known problem in pango there is a bug already about
this

- it would be nice if there was an option to load all files
on startup that were open when the editor was closed

you could use the session plugin, not sure if it is already
available on windows.

- upon startup, the editor tells me that there is a newer
version available but when I click on Download I get an error ("there
was an error displaying the url")

this was already fixed, you can try the version 2.29.2 in the ftp

Thanks for pointing this issues, if you find more please let us
know.

Thanks for porting the editor!

> showing up on the top gedit toolbar.
>
> This is what I tried:
>
> ui_str = """<ui>
> <toolbar name="ToolBar">
> <placeholder name="Tool_Opt3">
> </placeholder>
> </toolbar>
> </ui>
> """
>
> I'm based on the file browser plugin ui description. That is:
> <ui>
> <toolbar name="ToolBar">
> <placeholder name="Tool_Opt1"/>
> <separator/>
> <toolitem action="DirectoryRefresh"/>
> <separator/>
> <placeholder name="Tool_Opt2"/>
> <separator/>
> <toolitem action="FilterHidden"/>
> <separator/>
> <placeholder name="Tool_Opt3"/>
> </toolbar>
> ...
> </ui>
>
> I think that if I had the same UIManager as the plugin has, I could do
> this job. Is it possible to access the plugin's UIManager? Is there
> another way to edit this toolbar?

Basicly no, you can't change that toolbar from another plugin like that.
What we could do is expose this similarly to how you can extend the
context menu of the file browser widget, namely using the message bus
API. Then you could add/remove toolbar buttons. What do you want to use
this for? Is it possible that you could the same with putting new items
in the context menu (which is preferable)?

Jesse

>
> Thanks

Dear List,

I could not find any (positive) information about the status of the middle mouse button issue yet.
Is this already solved in a newer version of gedit (mine is 2.28.2) from Debian Squeeze (testing).

The issue is that using the middle mouse button for inserting text makes the cursor jumping to the
original text (the one that is marked and that shall be copied). This is really annoying and makes
this feature more or less useless (as long as you are not copying on the same screen page).

Thanks for your answer!

Cheers,

When in notepad in M.Win. it automaticly follows the text cursor when
moving it with mouse or keys, not the same in GEdit. In GEdit text
cursor only follows keyboard movements not the mouse, if u select a
location with mouse that is out of the GEdit corrently visible
positsion it vont show it, i have to write something or move with the
keys to see the location of the text-pointer.
There is a more serious issue with printing in the windows version: Only a very
Maybe this has to do with metric measurements (mm) in the page setup dialog?

About this, no idea really.
>>>>> steps do I need to take to get the "Spell Checker" plugin working?
>>>>> Currently, I have the plugin enabled, but there are no languages listed
>> I'm sending the relevant bits, but you can look up the gedit-list
>> archives to review the thread in full if you like.
>>
>> ------------------<previous post>------------------
>> Hello, I am also posting this response to the list, as it may be of use
>> to others.
>>
>> I am using Gedit on Windows XP Pro. I assume that this will work in
>> Windows 2k onwards, but is untested by me. This is what I did to get the
>> Aspell spelling checker in Gedit (Win32) to work under Windows XP.
>>
>> I installed the binaries for Aspell Win32 found here:
>> <http://aspell.net/win32/> That is; both the Aspell executable and
>> dictionaries of my choice were downloaded and installed from that link's
>> page.
>>
>> I also installed the latest *stable* binaries for Gedit (Win32).
>>
>> Installing the Aspell Win32 binaries using its default settings, places
>> the Aspell directory in C:\Program Files\Aspell
>>
>> Inside the Aspell directory is the "bin" folder, inside this are several
>> files but the one of interest is named "aspell-15.dll".
>>
>> I made a *copy* of "aspell-15.dll" and re-named it "libaspell-15.dll"
>> I kept both DLLs in the same "bin" folder of Aspell because I use other
>> programs that make use of Aspell win32 and do not want to break them
>> (they are happy with using "aspell-15.dll" as is).
>>
>> Then I made sure that I set the PATH environment in Windows to point to
>> "C:\Program Files\Aspell\bin". For those who are unsure of how to do
>> this in Windows can follow the instructions here:
>> <http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000549.htm>
>>
>> Restart the computer or logout and log back into Windows.
>>
>> Spelling checks should now work properly in the Windows version of
>> Gedit. At least this is what has worked for me.
>>
>> HTH
>> ------------------<\previous post>------------------
>>
>> Now, Ignacio may have sinced fixed the plugin so that Gedit is no longer
>> looking for a "libaspell-15.dll" any more. So if you haven't been asked
>> by Gedit where this DLL is, then I think that all you need to do is set
>> the PATH environment to point to Aspell as described above and it should
>> start working for you.
>>
>> Cheers, Mike.
>
>
> Mike,
>
> That's brilliant! Thanks for taking the time to re-post your
> solution. I apologise for not seeing it earlier, but I only
> subscribed to the gedit list recently. I don't know how I missed
> finding your original post in my searches but...
>
> I'll try this approach and see if it works for me.
>
>> steps do I need to take to get the "Spell Checker" plugin working?
>> Currently, I have the plugin enabled, but there are no languages listed
>
> Feature request:
>
> Splitting the gedit window horizontally or vertically would
> allow to edit (or compare for differences) two documents side-by-side
> (possibly showing differences with color codes in the magin of each
> side).

We are working on natively supporting this in gedit 3.0 which should be
finished somewhere next year. You can follow the work in the multiview
branch if you want, but at the moment it is probably not very usable.

I think there might be a plugin out somewhere that implements split
view, but I don't know how good it is, or how well maintained. Other
than that, you can always drag one tab out of the window to create a new
window to kind of create the split window idea (at least you can view
two different files at the same time).

Jesse
>
> Sincerely,

gdp-0.3.1 (2.28.0): Markup completion
=====================================

This release adds XML-based markup completion.

    * Detection is based on the language/highlighting of the document.
The supported languages are: XML, XSLT, HTML, Mallard, Docbook, and
      Zope page templates.
    * When opening a tag, the completer suggests other open or empty tags
that are already in the document.
    * When closing a tag, the complete suggests the tags that are still open
before the cursor. This is helpful, though not perfect. The root element
for example, will always be listed since it is closed at the end of the
      document.
    * When the adding an attribute, the completer suggests the attributes that
      were used in other tags.
    * You still need to know the markup's grammatical rules since elements
and attributes are suggested from context rather than schema.
    * The implementation could be extended to suggest elements and attributes
      for specific grammars.

Important changes.

    * The completion key accelerator has changed from <Control><Shift>Space to
<Control>Slash (Ctrl+/) to avoid conflicts with HTML snippet commands.
allow to edit (or compare for differences) two documents
side-by-side (possibly showing differences with color
codes in the magin of each side).

Sincerely,

I come from Apple's MPW - Macintosh Programmer's Workshop - which runs only on classic Macs and is not supported for OS X. I miss it.

In MPW the text files that you work with usually contain shell commands that are executed by selecting them and poking the ENTER key which is not the same as a RETURN as it is on a Windoze-style keyboard. There were commands for editing what Apple called a "target" window which was just another text file which might not even be opened.

The commands you use stick around and a worksheet soon collects a bunch of things that you do all of the time. So. . . .

Have a look at: <ftp://ftp.macnauchtan.com/Software/gedit/target/installtarget.txt> and, if you like, the other files in that directory.

cd somewhere and then:
curl -O ftp://ftp.macnauchtan.com/Software/gedit/target/installtarget.txt
will do it in a terminal session.

What it all is is a pack of gedit tools that allow you to set up one of the open files in a gedit window as a target. After you do that you can execute perl commands, especially the ones that do substitutions with regular expressions, on the target file.

It's been working for me for a couple of weeks but it's probably a certainty that it will break when other folks try things. If it sounds interesting please give it a try and let me know if you're interested in a more robust implementation with nice error messages.

It needs 2.28.0 or better but it doesn't need the promised fixes to the tools bugs that I have identified before.

And all testing was done with ubuntu 9.10 Linux.

    Hello,

This is regarding gEdit for Windows, version 2.28.0-1.
- on my dual screen system, the editor does not open up where I had it placed last, on the second screen (even Notepad does that), but instead on the first screen

probably a gtk+ problem

    - the editor seems to have problems selecting entire "words" that are made up of letters and numbers, e.g. "abc12de3f" - double-clicking selects either the letters or the numbers, but not the entire word (triple-clicking selects the entire row, so that is not the answer either); again, that is something Notepad does not seem to have a problem with

this is a known problem in pango there is a bug already about this

    - it would be nice if there was an option to load all files on startup that were open when the editor was closed

you could use the session plugin, not sure if it is already available on windows.

    - upon startup, the editor tells me that there is a newer version available but when I click on Download I get an error ("there was an error displaying the url")

this was already fixed, you can try the version 2.29.2 in the ftp

Thanks for pointing this issues, if you find more please let us know.

Thanks for porting the editor!

Thank you for your hints.
I've investigated a bit and start building a dummy plugin for managing SVN.
Anyway I haven't found any signal sent from Filebrowser to the bus
when a file or a directory is selected.
Am I correct?

2009/11/23 Jesse van den Kieboom <jesse@...>:

> At the moment, this is not possible out of the box. However, the file
> browser plugin is accessible from other plugins for some time now using the
> gedit message bus. This means that in principle, the external tools plugin
> can get this kind of information from the file browser plugin.
>
> I can think of two possible solutions right now:
>
> 1) Add some extra environment variables like GEDIT_FILE_BROWSER_CURRENT_DIR
> which you could use in external tools
>
> 2) Implement 'internal tools' in external tools. These tools would run in
> the gedit process, using python, giving it full access to gedit internals,
> and thus the message bus. Basicly, you would write kind of mini plugins.
>
> Both solutions require work on the external tools plugin, so no immediate
> fixes. Solution 1 would be the simplest to implement, and if you're
> interested you could try doing this yourself.
>

At the moment, this is not possible out of the box. However, the file
browser plugin is accessible from other plugins for some time now
using the gedit message bus. This means that in principle, the
external tools plugin can get this kind of information from the file
browser plugin.

I can think of two possible solutions right now:

1) Add some extra environment variables like
GEDIT_FILE_BROWSER_CURRENT_DIR which you could use in external tools

2) Implement 'internal tools' in external tools. These tools would run
in the gedit process, using python, giving it full access to gedit
internals, and thus the message bus. Basicly, you would write kind of
mini plugins.

Both solutions require work on the external tools plugin, so no
immediate fixes. Solution 1 would be the simplest to implement, and if
you're interested you could try doing this yourself.
