Hi GNOME Marketing folks,

Larry Cafiero[1] is going to be taking over the GNOME US Event Box. Please welcome Larry to the GNOME Marketing team.

Thanks to Rosanna for maintaining the GNOME Event Box for all these years!

Larry's first trip with the box will be to SCALE. If you need the box any where in the US, please let Larry know.

We're still working on a few things to add to the box:
* putting stickers in the box (Rosanna)
* working on a banner (Vinicius)
* tshirts for the volunteers (Rosanna)
* working on handouts (Paul Cutler, Denise)

We're also working on an FAQ, talking points and other info for the people that man the booth - this info will be on the wiki.

For those interested in helping out, we are also looking for someone to send out Friends of GNOME gifts. I'm hoping this can mostly be done through our Zazzle store once it's up and running but right now it means maintaining our stash of goodies (stickers, tshirts, mugs, etc) and mailing them out every couple of weeks to people that have donated to Friends of GNOME. If you are interested, let me know.
I think it's a great idea.

Another thing that has been suggested is doing short blurbs on why companies sponsor GNOME or how they use it. We could put it in the same place.

Maybe an "About sponsors" section where each one gets a page.

I was recently asked by someone in Sun to provide a list of ways
that Sun has been involved with the GNOME community. I looked on
the GNOME Wiki for any information about this, but did not really
find anything.

This got me to thinking that we could do more to acknowledge the ways
that people and organizations help the GNOME Foundation and community.

Would it make sense to have a Wiki page where we could keep track of who
sponsored various events, hackfests, and activities? And perhaps put
logos of all organizations that have played a significant role in
GNOME's history.

This seems like it would be a nice way to acknowledge the organizations
and people who support GNOME via sponsorships.

Thoughts?

sponsored various events, hackfests, and activities? And perhaps put
logos of all organizations that have played a significant role in
GNOME's history.

This seems like it would be a nice way to acknowledge the organizations
and people who support GNOME via sponsorships.

Thoughts?

Hello,

I hope this mailing list is the correct place to send this offer, my
apologies in advance if it is not.

We recently launched the Ad Bard Network aiming to connect FLOSS
relevant businesses with free software community users, influencers,
developers and architects. The network operates under the guidance of
the Free Software Foundation:
http://www.fsf.org/news/ad-bard

We would like to donate an advertisement to the Gnome Foundation. Tag1
Consulting will pay the $250 fee for your advertisement, however you
will need to provide the actual ad which must be directly relevant to
free and open source software. Your ad will then be displayed on all Ad
Bard member websites through the month of December, 2009. We do not ask
anything in return, we are simply working to spread the word about our
new advertising network and to provide relevant advertisements for our
publishers:
http://adbard.net/adbard/websites

In order to move forward on this, we will need an image and text which
will be used as your advertisement. The advertisement must be a jpg,
png, or static gif measuring 120 pixels wide by 90 pixels tall. The text
must be no more than 80 characters long. We will also need to know
where to link the advertisement to.
http://adbard.net/faq

Please let me know if you have any questions. I can be reached by email

>>> also add products such as coffee mugs, tote bags, hats, sweatshirts and
>>> more.
>>
>> I'd keep it relatively simple -- so no more than three or four things
>> aside from the t-shirts. (I suspect there's some study that would show
>> that choice overload results in fewer sales...) But definitely a mug,
>> hat, and sweatshirt.
>
> I agree with "Keep it simple". I would say "no more than 8 items,
> total". Including t-shirts.

Yep. The good thing about Zazzle is that they have the tshirts in a wide
variety of colors.

> I would like to see t-shirt, polo shirt, maybe sweatshirt (not
> convinced), mug, and perhaps a poster or two. I'd avoid tote bags and hats.

I'd say drop a couple "green" stuff in there. Water bottle and/or coffee mug.

behdad

> One polo shirt design, with an equivalent t-shirt design, and 2 or 3
> Thanks to Daniel and Andreas for doing the design work and implementing
> the CSS on the store - you can see it at http://www.zazzle.com/gnome.
> Andreas still wants to do a little more work on the logo and some areas
>
> In a couple of months, we can do a call for artwork from the community
> to do special editions or limited runs or that kind of thing. Right now
> in the short term, I'd like to see us get the store up and running
> before we try to do to much.
>
> Please reply with your feedback and let's see if we can't get this
We have a Braille printing expert on staff here at the University of
Toronto who has offered to help me with embossing the GNOME conference
handout. Is there something ready for production yet? I can ask her to
provide some input on how well it will transcribe to Braille and the
issues involved with making a Braille handout with pictures and text.
Hi,

Diego Escalante Urrelo wrote:
> currently GNOME offers other groups, companies or projects to join the
> Foundation as Advisory Board members. This -as you know- implies
> benefits and responsibilities for both sides: a fee to be payed, a seat
> in the advisory board calls, etc.

Non-profits on the AB don't pay a fee I think, do they?

The major advisory board issue is that if it gets too big, the overhead
of interacting with it goes up, and the value that we or any individual
member gets goes down.

> So, we -the Board- are asking for your feedback to brainstorm and try to
> define a role or model that would allow new organizations to partner
> with GNOME Foundation in a more consistent way.
>
> Here are some ideas to discuss:
> - Organizations doing humanitarian work: we definitely want to work
> with organizations that do work in the developing world. How best could
> we help them? What can we offer, can we really help them? Can they help
> us?

Put another way - what do we have to offer? Training, resources,
computers, visibility? We can think of all kinds of mutually beneficial
partnerships out there - but many NGOs are now very conscious of the
value of their brand, and sell it very expensively indeed.

One ideas that comes to mind: "Become a Friend of GNOME benefactor
before the end of December, and give an OLPC computer to a child" - 50%
of the first year's donation could go to another cause.

On learning from other NGOs, I think thaty we can't do much better than
looking at their fundraising documents and annual accounts :)

> - For non profits or non business companies: should we have a
> one-size-fits-all donation fee for joining? should we judge case by
> case?

There's a world of difference between the Mozilla Foundation and the
Eclipse Foundation and (say) Debian. One size fits all is easier, but
leaves money on the table in some sense.

> - AdBoard relationship: if we were to have a group of non AB
> organizations, should we have 'open' AB meetings where they can
> participate?

No - the ad board is the ad board. There is nothing to stop the board &
more generally the foundation working closely with (say) an education
working group. I would suggest that the education working group, if you
have one, should be essentially "universities where free software
development is taught" rather than "universities interested in
researching free software projects". To be frank, we have very little to
learn from the second.

> - Some companies that use GNOME technology might be happy to support us
> with a logo exchange: how can we engage them and what can we offer and
> request concretely?

Engage with email first - we have contacts in pretty much every GNOME
partner & redistributor. Do you have a list of companies? Do you have a
logo? Is there a special logo for the logo exchange? These are all
things that were worked on by Jeff some years ago - reviving that would
be a nice first step.

> In the same fashion, here are some ideas about what we could offer:
> - Recognition as a GNOME supporter
> - A press release
> - Presence in our website as supporters
> - Promotion space in our website (as content, not ads)
> - Consider them "sponsors" or "supporters" of certain events

- Access, cross-marketing (buy something from them, give to GNOME, buy
something from us, give to them)
- Feedback, access to our members
- Assistance in projects (perhaps the GNOME Foundation should start
doing some paid work which is related to its mission, and start charging
some people for training, consulting, etc)?
- Access to our users (certain types of partnership could be possible
with online services).

Cheers,
Dave.
Diego:

> currently GNOME offers other groups, companies or projects to join the
> Foundation as Advisory Board members. This -as you know- implies
> benefits and responsibilities for both sides: a fee to be payed, a seat
> in the advisory board calls, etc.

Right. The Advisory Board is a useful forum for larger organizations
that have a big stake in GNOME, for organizations whose input is
particularly important to the GNOME community, etc. It is not well
suited for smaller organizations who may simply want to show support
towards GNOME or build a closer relationship.

> So, we -the Board- are asking for your feedback to brainstorm and try to
> define a role or model that would allow new organizations to partner
> with GNOME Foundation in a more consistent way.

I think it would be appropriate for the GNOME community to provide a
menu of options for consideration. I think the GNOME Foundation could
improve community relationships and increase donations if we made it
easier for people and organizations to participate and show their
support in a variety of ways. Friends of GNOME is good, but it seems it
should be a piece of a larger puzzle.

Below you highlight two very different kinds of organizations:

- Affiliation with like-minded organizations. I would think that if
the GNOME community has a strong ethical, philosophical, or moral
connection with another organization, that we would want to support
each other without requiring significant fees or donations.

- Organizations who want to show their support of GNOME by providing
a donation. The GNOME community could provide some services or other
benefits in return for a donation. As you suggest below, link
exchanges, promotional opportunities, sponsorship of certain events,
etc. seem like good incentives to encourage organizations to donate.
I would think that this type of sponsorship would appeal to small
businesses like consulting firms that do work with GNOME-related
technologies. It would be a way for them to show support of the
GNOME community and for the GNOME community to help promote them as
 well.

So, I would think we probably need two different types of programs for
these two very different kinds of organizations.

> Here are some ideas to discuss:
> - Organizations doing humanitarian work: we definitely want to work
> with organizations that do work in the developing world. How best could
> we help them? What can we offer, can we really help them? Can they help
> us?
>
> - For non profits or non business companies: should we have a
> one-size-fits-all donation fee for joining? should we judge case by
> case?

Earlier I suggest that it would be good to a "menu" of options.
However, such a menu could develop over time. It is hard to predict
what a menu should look like when we do not yet know who would consider
participating.

It probably makes sense to develop a more simple program to start and
enhance it over time. It will be more clear how to improve such a
program once we know what sorts of organizations will participate, what
their needs might be, and how we can improve the program to meet
particular needs.

> - AdBoard relationship: if we were to have a group of non AB
> organizations, should we have 'open' AB meetings where they can
> participate?

I suspect that most organizations who would participate would not have a
real interest in sitting in on advisory board meetings. If there were
such an interest, it would probably make sense to consider it on a
case-by-case basis.

However, there might be value in having 1-2 special (non-advisory board)
meetings per year where we would invite all organizations that show
their support to the GNOME community. Topics more focused on community
building would probably be more interesting to such an audience than the
usual advisory board topics.

> - Some companies that use GNOME technology might be happy to support us
> with a logo exchange: how can we engage them and what can we offer and
> request concretely?

I would say "companies that use or support GNOME technology". I would
think that this sort of program would be particularly interesting to
contractors who support GNOME, for example.

> In the same fashion, here are some ideas about what we could offer:
> - Recognition as a GNOME supporter
> - A press release
> - Presence in our website as supporters
> - Promotion space in our website (as content, not ads)

I do not see why we need to limit promotion to the web at this stage in
discussions. Perhaps there could be some space in forums like GNOME
Journal or other things we publish for such promotion?

> - Consider them "sponsors" or "supporters" of certain events

I think the main reason that the board has wanted to raise this issue
with the marketing team is twofold:

- To help brainstorm how to put together an attractive program. What
sorts of things can we realistically offer to make such a program a
 success.

- Such a program will obviously create more work. Much of the
additional work seems like things that the marketing team would be
expected to help with: press releases, logo exchanges, promotional
content. So, I think we need the marketing team to help shape such
a project so that we ensure that any additional work we create for
ourselves is manageable. Perhaps we should make a plan plan that if
this sort of program is very successful that some of the donation
money is set aside to provide compensation to those who do this kind
 of work.

Hello marketing list!

currently GNOME offers other groups, companies or projects to join the
Foundation as Advisory Board members. This -as you know- implies
benefits and responsibilities for both sides: a fee to be payed, a seat
in the advisory board calls, etc.

However, this doesn't necessarily works well for organizations or groups
that might have a different thing to offer to the Foundation by
associating, and that might be interested in something different from
the Foundation than a seat in the AB.

Can they help
us?

- For non profits or non business companies: should we have a
one-size-fits-all donation fee for joining? should we judge case by
case?

- AdBoard relationship: if we were to have a group of non AB
organizations, should we have 'open' AB meetings where they can
participate?

- Some companies that use GNOME technology might be happy to support us
with a logo exchange: how can we engage them and what can we offer and
request concretely?

In the same fashion, here are some ideas about what we could offer:
- Recognition as a GNOME supporter
- A press release
- Presence in our website as supporters
- Promotion space in our website (as content, not ads)
- Consider them "sponsors" or "supporters" of certain events

All ideas appreciated, thanks!
