[Bug gas/10946] New: Odd behavior of character escapes

The gas manual says "The same escapes apply to characters as to strings"
(http://sourceware.org/binutils/docs-2.20/as/Chars.html#Chars), and one of the
string escapes is "\ digit digit digit", "An octal character code."
(http://sourceware.org/binutils/docs-2.20/as/Strings.html#Strings). Also, "Any
other character when escaped by \ gives a warning, but assembles as if the `\'
was not present"

Gas appears to directly replace a character constant with the number, instead of
replacing the whole field, so things like 'A0 are legal ('A becomes 65, and it's
like you typed 650). I assume this is intended behavior and not a bug, although
I can't find it documented anywhere.

However, constants like '\000 appear to be handled incorrectly. \0 isn't a valid
escape, so it's just handled as a normal 0. '0 becomes 48 (the code for 0), and
the other 0s are suffixed as above, so '\000 = '000 = 4800

I tried to reproduce this problem, but failed. :-(

The bfd_plugin_set_program_name symbol is defined in plugin.o which
should be included in the libbfd.a library mentioned above. Can you
check to see if it is there, or if the bfd/plugin.c file was
mis-compiled somehow ?

Try this:

1. Download the sources for binutils. Even though you do not want all
of them there is no standalone gprof tarball available. It should not
matter that you have a few extra source directories lying around.

2. Unpack the tarball, create a build directory, and run the configure
script with the target you have in mind. e.g.:

% tar xf binutils.tar.bz2
% mkdir build
% cd build
% ../configure --target=arm-elf

3. Now just build the gprof part of the binutils:

% make all-gprof

4. If you want gprof installed then run:

% make install-gprof

Well basically it is what ARM have stated in their Architecture Reference
Manual. In this particular case for example we had a mode 3 address with the P
bit clear (indicating post- addressing) and also the W bit clear (indicating no
writeback), which does not make any sense. Why compute an address after the
memory access and then ignore it ?

What it really means is that ARM hardware implementers are free to do whatever
they like in UNPREDICTABLE situations. So for example in this case the hardware
could assume that post- addressing always implies writeback and ignore the W
bit. Or it could check the W bit and not update the address register. Both
implementations would conform to the ARM specification but obviously would
confound any assembly code writers or compiler implementers.

What I meant was that the instruction itself is still defined. (So for example
in the test case you supplied the instruction is still a store-half-word). But
the exact behaviour of the side-effects of the instruction is undefined. (So
again in the example the r0 register may or may not be updated with the post
computed address).

I have checked the patch in, but I will leave this issue open for reports of
other UNPREDICTABLE bit patterns.

That part is never going to work with gold. It is asking the linker for the
default linker script, editing it, and passing it back to the linker. gold does
not have a default linker script to edit. Building glibc with gold will require
using a different approach of some sort.

[Bug gold/10938] New: There should be a way for ld and gold to coexist

gold is faster and a few things (e.g. llvm) have started to require it -- but at the moment, it isn't
possible to build everything with gold (e.g. gold can't link glibc, building VirtualBox with gold seems to
cause corrupted debug info, ...).

Distributions are starting to come up with hacks to make both coexist (e.g. suse seems to have
/usr/bin/ld==old ld, /usr/bin/gold==gold, hacked in gcc option to make it use gold on request, using
traditional ld by default; we're thinking about /usr/bin/ld==gold, /usr/bin/gnuld==old ld, hacked in gcc
option to make it use gnuld on request, using gold by default).

To prevent lots of incompatible hacks to make a coexistence of ld and gold possible, one way
should be added upstream.

the output of objdump still can be run through gas.

That patch is right, thanks, except that that PE is rather surprising
because is not used as a target symbol within gcc docs. I cannot tell about
BeOS because I never got in touch with one. I am going to report a bug
against MinGW as soon as the ld documentation is fixed to specify the
startup symbols supported. That information should probably go to the
platform-specific section of ld also, except that I hope it is subject to
change because the implementation should be augmented to support
wide-character applications properly (or at least as properly as MSVCRT
allows, which means UTF-16LE and BMP only).

It certainly does look like a binutils bug.

Are you able to repeat the test using a more modern version of gcc ? Say one
of the 4.x series ? (This is just a guess, but maybe there is a problem in the
binutils linker which was worked around by a change in gcc. This would explain
why this problem has not shown up before).

Can you upload the test_binutils.o, sun_ld and gnu_ld binaries so that we can
have a look at them ?
