GNU Zebra manages TCP/IP based routing protocols. It supports BGP-4 protocol as described in RFC1771 (A Border Gateway Protocol 4) as well as RIPv1, RIPv2 and OSPFv2. Unlike traditional, monolithic architectures and even the so-called 'new modular architectures' that remove the burden of processing routing functions from the cpu and utilize special ASIC chips instead, Zebra software offers true modularity. Zebra is unique in its design in that it has a process for each protocol.

Hello fellows.

I have a FreeBSD 5.1 ( it's old, I know and soon it'll be updated ) and
a Zebra 0.95a version providing ospf dynamic routing. Recently I added
an IP alias to the interface where the ospf is acting and everything
went OK. When I removed the IP alias - ifconfig bge0 -alias .... - the
server lost all the routes learned on that interface, despite the
interface did not went down. I goggled a lot and did not find an
explanation to that behavior. I restarted the zebra using zebractl and
the routes went to the route table OK.

Is it possible the 'ifconfig alias' had interfered with the zebra ?

Sorry if it's a dumb question and thanks in advance for any help. Excuse
> > Hi guys:
>
> > I am new to Zebra and I have trouble following the doc (I am new.. )
>
> Sounds like you're a lot newer than the last release of Zebra is. If you are running a modern Linux distribution (or maybe the BSD's) you are probably running Quagga, a fork of Zebra, and not Zebra. There are now a lot of things in Quagga that never made it into Zebra. There hasn't been anything going on with Zebra, the project, in a long time.
>
> > There is a sample zebra config file provided in the Zebra doc, can
> > anyone please provide me samples of config files to "ripd", "ripngd",
> > "ospfd", "ospf6d" and "bgpd" please!! I am having trouble with
> > configure/running these routing daemons... I really need some help so please!!
>
> Insufficient information to proceed. Yes, the documentation is thick as mud but if you don't already understand the basics of the routing protocols and their configuration, there's not much we can do to help.
> Quite frankly, just your question tells me you shouldn't be monkeying with these. You're asking how to configure ripd, ripngd, ospfd, and ospf6d in one question? Do you even know which you want to use or what you intend to do with it? I won't say they are mutually exclusive (certainly ospfd and ospf6d could be seen together) but you carpet bombing us for newbie help and that tends to encourage me to direct you to an introductory text in routing protocols.
>
> 1) What are you trying to do with it?
>
> 2) What protocols do you require?
>
> 3) What platforms are you on.
>
> 4) Describe your network.
>
> 5) Take it to the Quagga list. At least that fork is maintained.
>

Hiii

I installed zebra without problems in fedora 11, my fedora11 have two networks interfaces,
eth0 and eth1. Both are configured only with an ip and mask (without gateway), I started quagga with commands:
zebra -d
ripd -d (rip is configured with version 2)

In each segment of LAN and WAN I have reply (using ping) from ip of router (fedora 11, zebra) but is not routing, I can't connect from WAN to LAN, LAN to WAN, there is no events in zebra.log and ripd.log with errors.
I don't know where is the problem.
Is there same configuration aditional on fedora 11 after of install zebra ??

My network topology is:

PC-WAN -------------eth1 zebra (fedora11) eth0 -------------------- PC-LAN
172.16.1.10 .1 192.168.1.1 .10

connection PC-WAN to zebra ok
connection PC-LAN to zebra ok

        1) You don't say what platform or distribution you are running.

        2) That version of Zebra (which is the latest) is almost 4 years old
and nothings been released since.

        3) Zebra itself has been pretty much replaced by Quagga, a branch years
ago, which is now approaching a release candidate for 1.0 before too
long.

        4) Current version for Quagga is 0.99.14, released not too long ago.

        5) What happens when you try with Quagga instead.

        http://www.quagga.net

        Mike

Hi, I'm developing a provider for sblim (http://sblim.wiki.sourceforge.net/)
using netlink sockets, this provider must give a routes list based on
user specified parameters. My question is, I can see that routes created by zebra uses the rtm_protocol flag equals to RTPROT_ZEBRA, but how can I identify what protocol had created that route.
What's
the way that zebra manage routes? It creates all routes on kernel route
table? if this is correct, how can I differenciate between a static
route and a dynamic route (created by ospf as example)...

Other question is: Where is stored the administrative distance configuration used by ospf, bgp, etc...?

thanks.

--
WARPTROSSE {The knowledge of a man belongs to all the humanity}
I’d suggest you check the ownership of the path /var/run/quagga/

Make sure you have read/write permissions all the way through the path down
to the config file.

If you don’t have the correct permissions, check the zebra.conf file, and
set the PID file to be stored elsewhere.

Hello, I have a company that wants to send me information (specifically botnet c&c channels) but will only send it via BGP. I am tring to find a way to process this information before applying it to my network. I am looking for a way to insert bgp add/update information into a database, or to a file and have a separate process manage that file.

Where would the best place to do this (sorry, havent done any c/c++ in the recent future)? I was looking at zclient->ipv4_route_add... Any other suggestions?

Thanks for the help.
software is still using this version.

However, if I specify this command
to set the version as 4+, zebra gives the following error
There is no such

it allows to set only version 4. Thus Zebra does not send these
MP_REACH_NLRI /MP_UNREACH_NLRI in its UPDATE.
I have tried zebra-0.95a for
this. Is there any newer verion of Zebra that supports these attributes.
Or

Multiprotocol Extensions for BGP-4.

Set up the neighbor's BGP version.
      <VAR>version</VAR> can be
<VAR>4</VAR>, <VAR>4+</VAR> or <VAR>4-</VAR>. BGP version <VAR>4</VAR> is the default value used for
BGP peering. BGP version <VAR>4+</VAR> means that the neighbor
supports Multiprotocol Extensions for BGP-4. BGP version <VAR>4-</VAR> is similar but the neighbor
speaks the old Internet-Draft revision 00's Multiprotocol Extensions for
BGP-4. Some routing software is still using this version.

However,
if I specify this command to set the version as 4+, zebra gives the following
error

There is no such command.
Error occured during
reading below line.
  neighbor 192.38.14.2 version
4+
I also cross checked Zebra
code, but it allows to set only version 4. Thus Zebra does not send
these MP_REACH_NLRI /MP_UNREACH_NLRI in its
UPDATE.

I have tried zebra-0.95a for this. Is there any
newer verion of Zebra that supports these attributes.

Or is there some other mechanism to enable Multiprotocol Extensions.

Thanks and
Regards,
Bishista
