Goodbye Barracuda

Hi Fellows,

I just got a CVS-commit-mail from Franck - which reminded me that there was
something I wanted to do for a while now.

I think it's obvious that I haven't been using Barracuda in years now. And
since half a year now, I've got a job at ableton which is my first actual
Python-Job. As some of you might know, Python is the language of my heart,
and unless I'm forced to, I'm not going back to Java. So - it's time to say
goodbye.

My personal preferences aside, I wanted to say that I very much enjoyed my
active days of development back 5, 6 years ago. The technology and community
were thrilling and it was a very positive experience, Barracuda being the
first project to achieve commit rights for me. Especially Christian & Jacob
have massively contributed to me feeling welcome.

Additionally, I still think that albeit maybe an overhaul by now would be a
good thing, I still believe in the principles and concepts Barracuda has. My
new Web-Framework of choice, TurboGears, whilst being different in many
aspects of course (Python-based as it is), has much in common regarding
templating, components and form-validation/handling I already knew from
Barracuda. So much of my own perception of the do's and don'ts of
web-programming have been positively shaped by Barracuda.

The one big project I did with Barracuda I still consider my first "real"
piece of commercial work, and even years after I had my final touches on it
(by now it's gone), I remembered design-decisions and technicalities and
could stand behind them.  Much of that is due to Barracuda.

And I worked with or saw other Java-based Web-Frameworks such as Struts, JSF,
Spring and the like - and even details might have been nicer, I always felt
that much of what Barracuda provided way earlier was missing from them.

So - I wish all of you guys here the best! My email used here will be
available for the forseeable future, so whoever likes to keep in contact is
welcome to mail me.

It has been a fun ride - thanks!

Diez

Hi Diez,

I must say to you the same thanks you say to Christian, Jake and the
others. While I was still learning Java, you were always helpful to me
while learning Barracuda. I also recommend your contribution package to
those trying to understand the framework.

So thanks for the nice words, and thanks for your contributions to the
project and the community (for the record, you were the european
coordinator for the fund collect to buy the BarracudaMvc domain name :)

I hope we'll meet in "another virtual life" :)

Best regards,

Franck

Hi Diez,

Thanks for all your contributions over the years.  As you describe, it was a
very active and fun project a few years back.  And you, in particular, helped
make it the fun project that it was.  It's been nice to feel like I have a
friend overseas, even if we've never met each other in person.

These days, the project has slowed down, both because Barracuda matured, thus
requiring less active development, and because, to this day, people still have
a hard time settling on one application framework.  Always gotta try something
new.  In many respects, Barracuda was ahead of its time.  These days, I think
Barracuda could use some work to keep up with the times.  Thank goodness for
Franck's active development!

Good luck with your new work and take care not to get tripped up by any of
that Python whitespace-is-significant issue :-)  I wish you the best in
whatever life brings to you, and I hope our paths cross sometime in the
future.

later,

Jake
