Hi,

[Cc:ing general@portals as the sponsoring PMC of Graffito, please
follow up on graffito-dev]

The time for a Graffito report is again coming up. My thoughts on the
current status:

* JCR Mapping: I unfortunately haven't had as much time as I would
have wanted to push for a release of the JCR Mapping component, but
there's still been activity thanks to Christophe, Felix, and Ruchi. I
still think there's enough activity and interest to move the component
into a Jackrabbit subproject.

* Graffito: The rest of the Graffito project has seen no activity
since the status discussions two months ago.

Based on this I'd be ready to recommend terminating the Graffito
project as dormant once the JCR Mapping component has been moved to
Jackrabbit.

Comments?

Jukka Zitting

Hi,

Does this mean that there wont be any portal CMS? Does Jackrabbit
include any JSR168 CMS portlet that can be used with Jetspeed2?

The code is still there, but as of now it doesn't seem like there's
too much interest in the idea.

No, at least not currently.

I'm ok with the Jukka proposal.
When do you want to move the jcr mapping components into Jackrabbit ?
I'm need more time to work on the first release (see on :
http://www.nabble.com/JCR-Mapping-release-t3160384.html).

Same here... but the interest still exists.

I originally wanted to push for a release of the component to get a
clear baseline that the rest of the Graffito project could continue
using until we get the component integrated in the regular Jackrabbit
release process. But if we are to retire Graffito as dormant then
having the release out is not so important. I'll poll the Jackrabbit
PMC for opinions on how to best proceed with the move.

If there is no interested community for the remaining code or the
original idea, i think it's best to retire the project.

So +1 for the proposed ideas.

I use the Graffito API in several applications
Being that it is not the standard, it looks like I will need to
convert the apps to JCR or JCR Mapping

The Graffito portlets are a bit dated, so I wouldn't mind reworking
them into Jetspeed core

I don't want to see the project die, but being that I haven't
committed for a very long time, I feel I don't have a valid argument
for keeping it going

Hi,

I'm just a "lurker" at this point on this list and new to Graffito and
Jetspeed (and Java in general), but like what I've seen and have been
working through my learning curve to become a Java, web developer.

I've seen the Jahia project and was hoping that Graffito would become
the free substitute/companion to Jetspeed.  I'm "free-time" developing
sites for charity and non-profit orgs leaving Jahia w/ cost involved for
non-profits.

Since it appears that this project will be put on ice, if anyone could
point me to another similar project that would be free to both charity
and non-profit orgs, I would greatly appreciate it.

Wish you all well on your future endeavors.

Thanks,
Charlie Logan

PS David & Jetspeed team, nice work on Jetspeed 2.1.  Thanks.  Wish I
knew enough to contribute.

Hi,

Thanks for the comments! Based on the feedback I've prepared the
following report:

<report>
Graffito is a framework for content-based applications, especially in
portlet environments. Graffito entered incubation on September 20,
2004.

Despite recent efforts the level of activity within the Graffito
project remains low. The only part of the project that enjoys
continued interest and commit activity is the JCR Mapping component,
whose transfer into a subproject of Apache Jackrabbit is being
prepared.

There is little indication that the level of activity within other
parts of the Graffito project would increase in future, so we will
most likely request termination of the project as dormant as soon as
the JCR Mapping component has been moved to Apache Jackrabbit.
</report>

BR,

Jukka Zitting

Thanks, good to hear.
We will have another bug fix release coming out in a month or so
(2.1.1)
Where as Graffito is going away, we will still build content support
into the Jetspeed 2.2 site and page components

Good to hear.

IBM WebSphere Portal now included WCM...
BEA Portal is including some Web Content Management facility..
JBoss Portal also positions itself there theoretically...
Microsoft Sharepoint includes WCM..
It's definitively a trend...

I think the trouble here is, that this is a lot of work and that Graffito
was not at all a bad idea, no it was just too much work for the amount
of comitters at the time and therefore when the work can be splitted into
smaller compoents that can grow over the years, it should still be the
target for Jetspeed to include, collaborate or build content features in one
or the other layer..

Thanks to everybody,
Greets,
Marky

Just for your information, a free community
edition of Jahia which includes both some Portal
(based on J2) and WCM features exists. Moreover
all editions (including all commercial ones) are
free of charge for charity orgs.

Else, regarding the end of the Graffito project
and having developed an integrated CMS coupled to
J2, I am quite sure that we could redo something
based on a futrue version of Jahia. Jahia will
move to Jackrabbit (future version 6.0 - we
wanted to move faster into that direction... but
you know what it is: too many customers to deal
with, not enough time to refactor existing
code... and your product roadmap is always
delayed...). Combined with such a move, we want
to better isolate open source versus commercial
features (which is not possible right now based
on the existing code base). So this also mean
that a possible contribution of our combined J2
Portal+WCMS+DMS stack would be possible in a near future.

Cheers,
Stéphane

I have some enhancements to be committed  to  jcr-mappng. Do you suggest
that I should be doing it only after it gets
moved to Jackrabbit project ?

No need to wait, just submit your enhancements to the Graffito issue
tracker. I'm not yet sure how in practice we'll transition JCR mapping
issues in Graffito to Jackrabbit, but I'm confident that we'll find a
way that isn't too disruptive.
