Gramps, Windows Vista and french locale

Hello,

Someone reported that he was not able to run Gramps with french by using
a .bat (or .cmd) called by Windows' Explorer, Gramps is always in english.

source : http://forum.geneanet.org/index.php?topic=391946.msg

He has a solution by running script into 'FreeCommander' !

Does someone know what happen and/or what should be done for having
Gramps in French on Windows Vista.

I am not using Gramps under Windows OS, but is there any default
launcher or shortcut on menu ?

Best Regards,
Jérôme R.

Hi Jerome,

Sorry can't help you much, .. I signed up to geneanet (free account ) to
see what the problem was, but the link wouldn't dispaly anything for me.
So I did a generic search in their forums for GRAMPS, and the only
references I saw were all in French (sorry can't speak French).

My only pointer is a reference in the GRAMPS wiki about using a batch
file to start GRAMPS in other languages, I don't know if that's the
method your comrade is using or not?
http://www.gramps-project.org/wiki/index.php?title=GRAMPS_and_Windows#Setting_the_working_language

Being native English speaker, not knowing any other lanagauges I really
haven't experienced trying to run GRAMPS in other langauges, although I
did try the suggested batch file once (under XP) and GRAMPS did come up
in German.

If that method allows the user to work in French, then he will need to
alter the start menu shortcut to point to his batch file, which of
course will be destroyed and not remade should he upgrade GRAMPS in  the
future, so it will be his responsibility to maintain this batch file
outside GRAMPS upgrade cycle.

Best of luck
Steve

Hi Stephen,

Thank you for your help !
Yes, sorry, forum is in french. :(
I am not the user with the problem ... but as he does not understand/write english, I am making the link between mailing list and Geneanet forum ...

I get more informations : Vista asks for launching Gramps into user control dialog when he runs script into default explorer and Gramps is in english. Under 'free commander', there is no dialog and Gramps is in french !

The script is very simple :

SET LANG=fr_FR.UTF-8
SET LANGUAGE=fr_UTF-8
gramps.py

start menu shortcut seems to start Gramps in english too !

Best Regards,
Jérôme

To start GRAMPS every now and then in another language do something
like this in a terminal:

LANG=fr_FR gramps

works for me

Thanks,

In fact, the "UAC User Account Control" has been added for Windows
Vista, which is filtering commands who calls 'python.exe' application...

I do not know if users under Windows Vista with a simple user account
are allowed to modify admin rights ?
Is it related to rights used for python installation or all programs are
filtered by this UAC ?

Gramps runs in french when the user disables UAC, but he wants a better
solution ... Does someone have a better solution ?

[Fixed] : Gramps, Windows Vista and french locale

by Jerome :: Rate this Message:

Hello,

User has fixed this issue by :

* unchecking 'Property --> Compatibility --> Privilege level --> Execute as administrator'. He also unchecked this entry on 'display param for all users'.

Thanks all !

Otherwise, for a [feature request] I am testing a python-setuptool script as replacement of Makefile ...
Some files are specific for Linux but currently I just found 1 file specific for Windows OS : ped24.ico ! I think we can check windows' os.name by using "win32" value, isn't it ? Is there some specific file/directory for the windows port ?

Is there any launcher for Windows OS : gramps.pyw ?

Best Regards,
Jérôme

The source code for GRAMPS is common to both linux and windows.
In the source repository you will find off the root directory,  a
directory called "windows" this is where you will find some packing
scripts for windows. Similarly there is a directory called "debian"
which contains the packaging scripts for debian.

What is your python setup tool, ... waf?

This seems to be OK on setup.py (I did not test it under Windows ...)

> What is your python setup tool

was a test, has been added on feature request :

http://www.gramps-project.org/bugs/view.php?id=2621

It is working on my config (Ubuntu 9.04 and python2.6).
I did not know what should be done with mime icons for Windows.
The last issues are related to some variables for launcher, const.py, or man files for posix. And an install issue (under Linux), which (over)writes specific os files with admin rights... There is also an uninstall class with a log file and some config variables on setup.cfg (ex: source build in zip format for windows users !).

It is an experimental mix, but for after testing I agree with Benny : Gramps could try to use python-setuptools rather than Makefile.

Improvements, contributions and additionnal tests are welcome !
I suppose this will be properly coded.
Currently, this setup.py does the job (like Makefile process) under my config.

> which contains the packaging scripts for debian.

I did not look at debian packages yet, but I suppose this could be added on setup.cfg (see options on python distutils libs).
