Re: Gramps 3.0.4.1 Windows Version AvailableDuncan,
Per your request, I renamed the windows version "gramps_3.0.4-1_winxp2000.exe". Download it from: http://drop.io/gramps4win Password = gramps I have loaded on my Windows XP machine and it works there, for those functions that I use (which is NOT every function). I have no way to test on Win2K although, in theory, it should work. I have only placed it on the drop.io site so that others could test it. After a while, assuming that I hear of no problems, I will request that it be loaded onto the regular GRAMPS site. As far as testing is concerned, I refer only to the installation process as all that I have done is package GRAMPs for Windows installation and cannot address functionality problems of GRAMPS itself. Re: Gramps 3.0.4.1 Windows Version AvailableFYI, this installer does not seem to install on Vista. It complains
about pygtk, glade, and pycairo not being installed, even though they are (under python 2.5.2). If it can be made to work under Vista, a better name might be gramps_X.X.X_win32.exe (but marking it for Python2.5 as well. There will have to be another version for Python2.6). As Benny mentioned in another place, GRAMPS should be able to be installed through easy_install. Anyone have experience with that? Perhaps we can make a windows sources version in zip format, too? Installation seems to be hard to do on a regular Vista box. -Doug Edward Comer wrote: > Duncan, > > Per your request, I renamed the windows version > "gramps_3.0.4-1_winxp2000.exe". Re: Gramps 3.0.4.1 Windows Version AvailableHi,
> FYI, this installer does not seem to install on Vista. It complains > about pygtk, glade, and pycairo not being installed, The "pygtk, glade, and pycairo not installed" error may be due to a bug in the nsis install script that Ed is using. If you run the installer again a second time (while python et. al are still cached) does it work? The problem is in these lines of the nsis install script: Exec '"$3" $TEMP\gcheck.py $1' DetailPrint "Pausing for gcheck.py exectution..." Sleep 1000 This will create a thread to run cgheck It will then sleep one second, and then go looking for results, ... the thread my not have finished (due to having to load python, and libraries, and write a file to file system), this is when it fails, the second run of installer, it seems python? is still resident in memory and faster to start up? If you replace those three lines with: ExecWait '"$3" $TEMP\gcheck.py $1' The install script does not proceed until the execution of cgheck.py is complete, it's a better solution. I have done a number of fixes/new features to the nsis install script (already committed to version control), however as some of the new features are writing things to the registry it now requires a user with privileges for installation. - don't know in the scheme of things if this is an issue or not - are there many people who install as restricted users?. I need to learn more about windows registry and permissions, to change the script so it can be run as a more restricted user, i.e. saving into the registry under 'current user' Vista may also impose other restrictions on what and where we can install things to, that may need to be worked into the install script, however I am not currently able to test under vista. Also I don't have time to work on this until Feb next year. > even though they > are (under python 2.5.2). If it can be made to work under Vista, a > better name might be gramps_X.X.X_win32.exe (but marking it for > Python2.5 as well. There will have to be another version for Python2.6). > I agree that gramps_X.X.X_win32.exe is a better name, however I am unsure if adding python version is relevant, given that the installer is not installing any python libraries, it is the users responsibility to get their python/pygtk/gtk environment setup previously before installing gramps. The only thing that is 'compiled' before installation is the language files, and the install script itself, I don't know if that precludes it from running on 64 bit os, if you have the python/gtk/pygtk chain in place. The install script does do some trolling through the registry looking for python, to run the gcheck.py program. It looks under various registry keys, including several with python2.4 and python2.5 in the key name, it would seem we will need to add some for python2.6 Also it seems it will use the first version of python it finds, if someone has multiple versions of python installed or dags hanging around in the registry, it might give unexpected results. > As Benny mentioned in another place, GRAMPS should be able to be > installed through easy_install. Re: Gramps 3.0.4.1 Windows Version AvailableOK - I just implemented Steven George's suggested change and uploaded to drop.io. I have NOT tested it to see what effect the change will make with Vista, Win2K or XP. I can only test with XP. I don't own Vista, and never will.
windows version of "gramps_3.0.4-1_winxp2000.exe". Download it from: http://drop.io/gramps4win Password = gramps ONLY tested with Windows XP! Re: Gramps 3.0.4.1 Windows Version AvailableThe idea with the naming structure, as I understand it, is that the
version is named x.x.x-b_os. Here 'x.x.x' is the version of the developers and -b is the version of the build. So each time the package is re-built/ re packaged it should be -b+1. Otherwise there's no way to see if the version I've recently downloaded is the most recent built. Which reminds me, is this version number also being set inside the program? I don't have it running on windows so I can't check. Does the designation win32 include win95 and win98? Re: Gramps 3.0.4.1 Windows Version AvailableThe version number is manually set in the install build script in order to fetch the proper sources, but the program is untouched in any way. Therefore, whatever version number, etc, would be present in the Linux installation is also present in the Windows installation.

Re: Gramps 3.0.4.1 Windows Version AvailableEd is correct the version number is manually set in the build script to get the correct sources, the script also uses that same (manually set number) to write out const.py which is the version number that gramps uses and displays in the about box. I would not say this method is fool proof, but it seems to work note: const.py is a build generated file no matter what build process you use. however other build process get the number from configure.in which is a version controlled file along side the sources. Re: Gramps 3.0.4.1 Windows Version AvailableI've downloaded and installed on my Vista-Box (Vista Home Premium, Serv.Pack 1 German) over an existing 3.0 GRAMPS. It installed very nice - but I strugle with 2 issues:
1.) opening media files (this issue was known already from previous version, still open, please see other thread) 2.) can't change properties in GRAMPS When I try to open the properties-dialog, GRAMPS comes back with the error: 3620874: ERROR: gramps.py: line 160: Unhandled exception Traceback (most recent call last): File "C:\Program Files\gramps\ViewManager.py", line 715, in preferences_activate GrampsCfg.GrampsPreferences(self.uistate, self.state) File "C:\Program Files\gramps\GrampsCfg.py", lin When I open a new, empty database and re-start GRAMPS, the dialog opens as expected. I don't know if that's new or also comes from previous installations. When I updated to 3.0.4-1, I left all the other components (GTK, Python, etc) untouched - but I've double-checked that they are on the required versions ... Any ideas? Thanks for your help ... Eckhard

Re: Gramps 3.0.4.1 Windows Version AvailableThese would be issues with the Python GRAMPS code, itself, and not the Windows installation. If these problems aren't reported in Linux operation, then it may be a coding incompatibility issue with Vista. I don't experience any problems running on XP.

Re: Gramps 3.0.4.1 Windows Version AvailableBased on the replies I've seen, it seams to me that this is not a bug in GRAMPS but most likely something with my local installation and configuration. So I de-installed GRAMPS and everything that came with it (python, gtk, etc) and removed everything else related to GRAMPS that I found. After new installation (exact versions as recommended on wiki) I found he same behaviour...
Again, I de-installed and installed with sligthly newer version (e.g. python 2.5.3c1, gtk-2.12.9, pycairo 1.4.12-1, pygobject-2.14.1-1, pygtk-2.12.1-2 with the same result... positive findings: GRAMPS works with that newer versions (on vista) but I still had the previous issues. Some more findings though experimenting: the error while opnening the preference-dialog did NOT occur as long as I had the language package of GRAMPS NOT installed. With Lang set to GERMAN it worked with an empty database. As soon as I imported data ( gpkg-file generated with GRAMPS 3.0.4 on Ubuntu 8.10 ) I had the old problem again. I found no configuration that had an impact on the issue with opening jpeg-media ... Any ideas how to solve the issue? Any recommendations?

The real error is at the bottom of the list, but I can't tell if this is the top, middle, or almost the bottom. Re: Gramps 3.0.4.1 Windows Version AvailableHi Eckhard,
I told you before, that seems to me like http://www.gramps-project.org/bugs/view.php?id=2416. Up today I know no fix for this problem. My ideas to the topic are placed in http://www.gramps-project.org/bugs/view.php?id=2438. If you real fight against the same problem as me, you may try my work around to be able to work with GRAMPS (I assume too that you don't use the build-in archive function): 1. start GRAMPS with it's default language --> experiences in my cases: the problem didn't appear 2. disable the option 'automatically open last database' (Edit --> Preferences --> Database) This is because GRAMPS internally stores same settings (especially the user name format) into the next database if it was opened without closing GRAMPS before (may be I'm wrong in some cases, it's mostly a result of same trials) 3. Close GRAMPS, start it again with it's default language and open the database having the described problem --> Don't worry if the displayed names of persons seems to be wrong. It's - so far I know - the display only because of a mishandled user defined name format. 4. Export the complete database as GRAMPS XML database. 5. Close GRAMPS. 6. Do a copy of the exported file 7. Use an Editor able to handle UTF-8 (I use jedit; http:\\www.jedit.org), but for sure there are also other editors available. 8. search for the section <name-formats> ... </name-formats> 9. If found (it should be immediately behind the section <header> ... </header>) just delete the complete section. I tried to describe all related findings and ideas in item #2416 and #2438. --> If not found: you have an other problem than me and for the moment I don't know how to help you, sorry. 10. Open GRAMPS again (language doesn't matter) - but without to open the "old" database having the problem!!! 11. Generate a new family tree and import the modified database (see 9.) That's hopefully all ![]() But keep in mind, the problem I know (and I assume it's also your problem) may occur every time you play with user defined name formats and you switch between several databases. So, every day I change my data, I do an Gramps-xml-backup before and afterwards that's why and also to be sure to don't loose data. I hope this helps. Good luck -Helge |

Re: Gramps 3.0.4.1 Windows Version AvailableHelge,
I executed exactly the steps as recommended - and it finally did solve my problem as well ... Your assumption seams to be true that the problem I had and yours are somewhat the same. Hope that the developers can find the root cause in order to fix the issue. One additional observation: the XML-file contains all the researcher-information - but these data are not imported... Maybe that's on purpose - but it may be worth to be mentioned here, just in case it helps to identify the root cause of the issue. Do I need to add something to your bug-reports? Many thanks for your help.
