Details:

i want to describe interesting bug about how grub2 sees discs and partitions.
grub version is 1.97beta4 (default in Ubuntu 9.10)
first of all, user has 3 OSes - Ubuntu 9.10, winXP and vista. grub2 menu
looks like this:

ubuntu ...
....
Windows loader

when users chooses "windows loader" entry, NTLDR boots with option whether to
boot xp or vista. vista boots normally, but if choose xp, computer reboots.
if change boot disc in bios to one which xp installed on - computer boots
with NTLDR and both win-systems boot normally.
if user tries to boot through grub2 console via "set root - chainloader -
boot", we see strange behaviour:

set root=(hd2,1)
chainloader +1
the answer is "error: no such partition"

set root=(hd1,1)
chainloader +1
boot
NTLDR boots, but if choose xp - reboot

set root=(hd2.1) //dot instead of comma!
chianloader +1
boot
NTLDR and both vista and xp boots!!

ok, trying last succesfull way. adding entry to 40_custom with dot used:
set root (hd2,1)
chainloader +1
when user selects new custom entry, the answer is "No partition"

and here is the most interesting thing - what "ls" command of grub2 console
says. it sees 4 HDDs instead of 3! (see real partition table below to
compare)
(hd0) (hd0,5) (hd0,3) (hd0,1) (hd1) (hd1,5) (hd1,1) (hd2) (hd2,5) (hd2,2)
(hd3) (hd3,5) (hd3,1) (fd0)

here is windows entry in grub.cfg:

through console - no. if, according to "ls" answer, try "set root (hd2,2)":

black screen appears with blanking cursor in upper-left, and computer doesn't
respond to anything except reset.
if try "(hd2,5":

it displays this error message:

but if use "set root=(hd2)" - grub2 boots NTLDR and both vista and xp works.

suggestion - initial boot menu instructions

I am running Ubuntu 9.10 with grub 1.97beta. I have been using Ubuntu
for over a year.

My daughter also uses my machine with Windows XP.

On the initial boot menu I have been setting XP as the default for my
daughter and manually selecting Ubuntu for myself. On each kernal
update I have been moving the latest version down next to the Windows
entry so I didn't have to make so many keystrokes.

I have been surprised with the number of kernal updates that change the
initial boot menu. Now with the new version of Grub I can't easily edit
the menu list. I was able to enter the name of Windows for the default,
I like that, it doesn't get lost with a kernal update. Didn't like
using the up arrow up an increasing number of times as updates come in.

Finally I tried the page up key. PROBLEM SOLVED! Windows stays selected
as the default, and as updates come in and the menu changes I still only
need to hit one key one time to get to the latest version.

I suggest you add the Page Up and Page Down keys to the instructions on
the initial boot menu. Now it only lists the arrow up and arrow down
keys.

GRUB2 supports hybrid GPT. It has even a tool gptsync for manipulating MBR of
hybrid GPT. However Hybrid GPT has to have protective entry in MBR as its
first entry and I see no reason to break this rule, especially that hybrid GPT
is just a kludge for legacy systems and often is worse as either GPT or MSDOS.
So your partition table is just invalid. Contact the developpers of whatever
tool created it and say that protective entry has to be the first one

Hello,

hybrid MBRs are not supported by the UEFI 2.3 standard (see [1]), but
nevertheless found in the field (see [2]).
OpenSuSE has added support for syncing GPT-partitions to a hybrid MBR to
parted2 (see [3]) and so it would be nice if grub supports such (non-standard)
hybrid MBRs.

Hybrid MBRs can have the EFI-GPT labeled partition in any of the 4 slots of
the MBR.

A hybrid MBR may look in linux-fdisk like this:

To implement this feature grub2 should scan all 4 MBR partitions for the EFI
GPT-label.

This would also lead to an enhanced user-experience on the side of the
end-user (see [4], [5]).

I've attached a patch to implement the detection of GPT for hybrid MBRs.

Details:

I want to use grub2 (1.97.1) to boot OpenSuSE-ia32 (10.3) from a GPT-labeled
disk. The disk was prepared using parted2 (GIT-20091124):

Parted2 writes a protected MBR to the disk which shows up in fdisk:

grub2-install produces the following error:

/usr/sbin/grub2-install --recheck --no-floppy /dev/sda --force
grub-setup: warn: This GPT partition label has no BIOS Boot Partition;
embedding won't be possible!
grub-setup: warn: Embedding is not possible. GRUB can only be installed in
this setup by using blocklists. However, blocklists are UNRELIABLE and its
use is discouraged.
Installation finished. No error reported.
This is the contents of the device map /boot/grub2/device.map.
Check if this is correct or not. If any of the lines is incorrect,
fix it and re-run the script `grub-install'.

(hd0) /dev/sda

As shown in the parted2-output there is a BIOS Boot Partition on the disk
(flag bios_grug), but grub2-install fails to detect it, because it only checks
the first partition for the "EFI GPT" label.

I've attached a patch to fix this.

The "workaround mentality" comes from the fact that there are no clear
suggestions for how to resolve the problem. The error message is fairly
opaque, even though i think i have a decent grasp of what's going on.

It sounds to me like you're saying that the right solution is to create a new
partition table on the device with different (better?) parameters. This would
most likely destroy the data currently on the device, right?

I ended up taking this route, by creating a new partition table with 63
sectors per trac with a single VFAT partition on it:

umount /dev/sdc1
fdisk -S 63 /dev/sdc
o
n
1

t
c
w
mkfs -t vfat /dev/sdc1

Could you suggest how to make a GPT with BIOS boot partition? Would i use
parted for that?

Could the grub-setup error message in this case be friendlier?

What about something like "You could provide more space for embedding by
changing your partitioning scheme, though this may put data on the drive in
question at risk (see parted(8), for example)" ?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BIOS_Boot_Partition_%28GPT%29 suggests that you
need parted 2.0 in order to make a BIOS Boot Partition, but
http://www.gnu.org/software/parted/download.shtml suggests that version 1.9.0
is the latest stable version.

I don't see how to make a GPT with a BIOS Boot Partition, i'm afraid.

It looks like the USB stick i'm using has the same issue, according to fdisk
-l:

I'm also seeing this problem right now on a 1GB USB stick with lots of space
available. I'm using 1.97~beta3-1 on a debian squeeze system:

Details:

10_linux calls make_system_path_relative_to_its_root with the directory of
the vmlinuz file (dirname) instead of the filename itself.

The problem is that grub-mkrelpath (which is called by
make_system_path_relative_to_its_root to do the real work) doesn't work with
the boot directory itself (and my system doesn't boot without the fix):

#/usr/bin/grub-mkrelpath /boot
/boot

but

#/usr/bin/grub-mkrelpath /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.31-1-amd64
/vmlinuz-2.6.31-1-amd64

So 10-linux needs to be changed to use the full kernel filename instead of
its dirname when calling "make_system_path_relative_to_its_root"

A small patch is attached.

Actually this should be fixed in trunk now too.
I added make_system_path_relative_to_its_root() to grub-setup.
And when I tested it it worked for me. (And revealed some strangeness with
ntfs-3g and our ntfs code)

grub-mkrescue does not report errors properly

Hi. I'm using grub2, in Ubuntu 9.10:

# grub-mkrescue --version
grub-mkrescue (GNU GRUB 1.97~beta4)

This command works for me and produces a floppy image from which I am
able to boot my system. Great job!

The problem I've discovered is that error reporting isn't adequate. As
an example, this command runs to completion without complaint:

# grub-mkrescue --modules=crap --overlay=/boot/grub
--image-type=floppy /tmp/grub_two-crap.dsk
Overlaying /boot/grub
1440+0 records in
1440+0 records out
1474560 bytes (1.5 MB) copied, 0.0144632 s, 102 MB/s

Clearly, there should be some complaint about a non-existent module.

I ran into this problem trying via trial and error to discover the
correct format for the --modules argument. I tried this without success

grub-mkrescue --modules=raid,mdraid,lvm ...

So, I probably needed to add the file extension, or the full path or
such.

grub and AHCI

Hi,
in short: grub 2 is not operational with PC BIOSs using AHCI mode for
SATA drives.
Doing so it claims that partitions have not been found when writing the
boot code. Reversing
to legacy IDE seems to be a theoretical workaround (which slows down
drives).
Test equipment: A P6T Deluxe running an Intel Core i7 920 and latest
Asus BIOS 1701.

Details:

If I try to boot from a grub.efi image created by grub-install then when I
select a menu entry first nothing happens ( the menu flashes ) and if I try
the same menu entry again I get the error "unknown command: initrd". If I make
a grub.efi image with all modules except kernel.mod included then the same
menu entry boots successfully.

This is with grub 1.97 from
https://launchpad.net/~jordanu/+archive/supergrub

I have attached a tar.lzma with my grub directory and in case it is useful
here is the build log for the package I am using:
