Gwenview for Konqueror in KDE4?Generally finding KDE4 in 2009.1 quite usable (in contrast to 2009.0),
but installing Gwenview no longer seems to add functionality to Konqueror. Did some searching, but didn't come up with anything relevant. Anyone know anything about this? Kparts still function in KDE4? Am I just missing something, or is this a Konqueror regression in KDE4?? Thanks, Norm |

Story of Mdv2009.0: I think there are lots of bugs and dropped features. Mouse middle button functionality (mainly for launching applications appropriate to the file) has been dropped. Now, I have to strain my hand more to launch applications. I somehow, failed to bind xfig to fig files. Application binding used to work like breeze on earlier releases. Dolphin FM does not let me launch a terminal from the "Tool" menu item. Sizes of displayed icons in the Konqueror somehow became a step bigger. I have not been able to alter the size of displayed icons. -C |

What is it you expected to see? And have you installed kipi-plugins? The provide quite a bit of the functionality in Gwenview. That worked. But when I relaunch the FM, the icons are back to their old sizes. How can I save the setting? I tried Settings -> Save View Profile "File Management". But, that did not seem to help, as the icons were back to their old sizes when the FM was relaunched. I have a similar problem with "enable tool tips" -- unable to save that setting either. -C |

Care to explain more? I have a system running an older version of Mdv (2008/2007) where this feature works in konqueror as follows: Say I have a .mp3 file. When I click on the icon of that file with the middle mouse button, the application for playing mp3 files is launched and that file is played. Similarly, for other types of files (xpdf/kpdf/... for pdf, etc). In Mdv2009.0 I am unable to open with their appropriate application using the middle mouse button. I used to find that very convenient. Earlier, clicking on a directory using the middle button would open a new konqueror window while the left mouse button would descend into that directory within the current window. Is there a way to revive the middle button functionality? -C |

First check that the file extension is associated with the players that you prefer to use, then go to the Embedded tab and experiment with settings there. If you can't resolve it this way let me know and I'll try to get an answer for you. Anne -- New to KDE4? - get help from http://userbase.kde.org Just found a cool new feature? Add it to UserBase |

What you got in KDE3 is functionality for Konqueror so that when you select/view image files an embedded Gwenview viewer is used by default, which provides: (1) Appropriate resizing; (2) Next and previous buttons appear automatically in the toolbar to allow you to move among images; (3) A Colors entry appears under the View menu, which allows you to adjust gamma, etc. Looking a bit further now, I see that an embedded Gwenview viewer is being used in Konqueror in KDE4, but it lacks features (2) and (3) above. So unfortunately, Konqueror in KDE4 is pretty useless for dealing with directories of images. This appears to be a regression in the KParts elements of Gwneview for KDE4. The kipi-plugins packge is also installed, BTW, but it has nothing to do with what I was talking about. Norm |

Okay, but I am not able to "save" the size of displayed icons. "Ctrl + mouse scroll" changes the displayed icon size in both konqueror and dolphin, but the size is not saved in konqueror. Failure to save settings in konqueror (on Mandriva 2009.0) looks like a bug to me now. Not being able to launch a terminal (konsole) in dolphin is a pain. Someones brilliant idea to make things a bit more like windows, I suppose. > > I tried Settings -> Save View Profile "File Management". > > But, that did not seem to help, as the icons were back to > > their old sizes when the FM was relaunched. > > I have a similar problem with "enable tool tips" -- unable to > > save that setting either. > > > Where are you setting this? In dolphin changes in icon sizes are remembered without explicit saving. -C |

This may be a long-shot, but make sure that the current user is the owner of all of the konq* files in /.kde4/share/config and of the contents of /.kde4/share/apps/konqueror and that all such files are writeable. > Not being able to launch a terminal (konsole) in dolphin is a pain. In 2009.1, dolphin can open a terminal (View - Panels - Terminal). I don't recall if this option was available in 2009.0 KDE4 is still under rapid development and each new release adds new features (or restores features that used to be available in KDE3). An update to KDE4.2.4 will soon be released for 2009.0. That update will include many new features as well as numerous bug fixes. Jim |
