Gx based on existing PHP MVC framework?Splitting from the main Gx thread. Seemed like a big subject unto
itself... When the thought of using an existing framework was tossed out a few weeks back, I wondered how seriously is this option being considered. If thoughts on this subject have already been discussed in IRC or in the thread, I may have missed them, sorry. Could folks share their thoughts on this subject here? Seems like making the choice to use a framework could free up developer cycles and provide more focus on Gx feature development. On the other hand, the Gallery framework is pretty damned powerful, tested, and known by the team. Thoughts? What are your attachments/ interests in using Gallery 2, existing PHP Frameworks, or something else as a foundation? Here's what I've read/heard recently about about CodeIgniter and Zend Framework. CodeIgniter seems to now be known as providing significantly better performance than the rest of the frameworks. This is in part due to Rasmus' recent talk on PHP Frameworks. Other than performance, I don't know much else about the merits of CodeIgniter. http://www.sitepoint.com/blogs/2008/08/29/rasmus-lerdorf-php-frameworks-think-again/ I've worked a bit with the Zend Framework in recent months. It's been dinged for increasingly poor performance in recent releases. The next major release promises to focus heavily on performance improvements. Their roadmap states that v2.0 will heavily leverage improvements in PHP 5.3. ZF has support for unit testing (to some degree), dojo integration (should be able to substitute YUI or other), a nice ACL component, and Zend_Tool promises to offer all sorts of command line tooling capabilities. Seems to me that ZF has really increased project momentum over the past year. Their partnership with Adobe to simplify interactions between Flex and ZF apps might be of some interest when discussing RIA interfaces/features in Gx like drag and drop, etc. All of this is fine and well, but ZF 2.0 won't be released until well into next year. http://phpimpact.wordpress.com/2008/09/16/zend-framework-controller-22-drop-in-responsiveness/ http://www.phpjack.com/content/zendframe-works-future (see Matthew's Clarification comment) http://blogs.adobe.com/flex/archives/2008/09/adobe_and_zend_announce_collab.html Thoughts? ------------------------------------------------------------------------- This SF.Net email is sponsored by the Moblin Your Move Developer's challenge Build the coolest Linux based applications with Moblin SDK & win great prizes Grand prize is a trip for two to an Open Source event anywhere in the world http://moblin-contest.org/redirect.php?banner_id=100&url=/ __[ g a l l e r y - d e v e l ]_________________________ [ list info/archive --> http://gallery.sf.net/lists.php ] [ gallery info/FAQ/download --> http://gallery.sf.net ] |

Re: Gx based on existing PHP MVC framework?GalleryUrlGenerator and GallerySession have gotten crazy-complex in
order to support: interoperability and security. If a framework has reasonable performance and it gives us these things, seems like a pretty good idea to me. - Alan Chad Kieffer wrote: > Splitting from the main Gx thread.
