The Human Media Lab of the School of Computing at Queen's University is
inviting applications for a PhD in Computer Science with an emphasis on
human-computer interaction. The project is supported by a grant from the
National Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC).

Industry/University Partners

The project is in collaboration with industrial partners Autodesk
Research (known for their Maya line of products), fuseproject (with
designer Yves Behar) and the University of Tokyo's Rekimoto Lab.
Opportunities exist for internships at these institutes.

Project Description

With evolving display capabilities come new capacities for
Human-Computer Interaction design. Over the past few years, there has
been a quiet revolution in display manufacturing technology. One that is
only comparable in scope to that of the invention of the first LCD, one
that directly resulted in Kay's DynaBook and the modern laptop. The
e-ink electro-chemical pixel, combined with advances in organic
thin-film circuit boards have resulted in displays that are so thin
and flexible, they are beginning to resemble paper. Soon displays will
completely mimick the high contrast, low power consumption and
flexibility of real ink. This will cause a revolution in computer user
interface design. This revolution marks a final frontier for
Human-Computer Interaction: one in which interactive computer displays
can have any organic form or shape, rather than the rigid technological
surfaces of DynaBook. One where the shape of the computer is the
input device. One where any object, no matter how complex, dynamic or
flexible its structure, can display information. This new paradigm of
Organic User Interface (OUI) requires a new set of design
guidelines. The proposed research is to study the design of Organic
User Interfaces from an engineering, design and empirical standpoint. As
part of this project, students will work with some of the world's top
designers to design new user interfaces based on new form factors
allowed by flexible OLED display technologies. These forms will be
related to product design, rather than conventional flat panel computer
forms. Some example form factors will include flexible e-book
readers, spherical displays and actuated display technologies. In
future products the physical shape of the computer will communicate its
functionality through physical affordances. This allows users to deduce
function by examining physically possible interactions with shape. As
the function of the device changes, so should its shape. OUIs may embody
form factors that are similar to clothing, or biological life forms, in
that they are flexible and multifunctional. As part of the project
team, you will be responsible for designing and building hardware
prototypes, as well as for designing and implementing software
interaction techniques for these prototypes. You will subsequently be
working with a team of expert usability specialists to evaluate the
designs using known empirical methods.

Application Criteria

The applicant will have a Master’s degree and strong interest and
background in human factors, computer science, industrial design,
cognitive science or electrical engineering. Interest (and preferably
experience) in two of the three areas of hardware engineering, software
design and empirical research is required. Applications must also meet
the regular admission criteria and will undergo the regular admissions
process for the PhD program.

Funding

The School of Computing will provide support to all admitted students
for a period of four years. The level of support will be competitive
with that offered by other Canadian universities, and may consist of a
combination of grant, research assistantship, and teaching
assistantship.

funded ISCC project team in the School of Engineering and

The Eindhoven University of Technology and Fontys University of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands seek candidates for a PhD position in "Design Research on physical and social play".

This PhD is part of a collaborative nationally funded project called 'PLAYfit' which aims to create playful solutions that stimulate secondary school students to be more physically active. The main goal of the project is to explore whether and how teenagers can be activated by translating aspects of gaming into physical concepts. The PhD candidate will work on the design, development and validation of a physical gaming environment that is tailored to the needs and motivations of secondary school children.

The project is a collaboration between the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) and the Fontys University of Applied Sciences (Fontys Hogeschool). The PhD student is jointly supervised by the User-Centred Engineering Group of the Department of Industrial Design, TU/e and the Serious Games lectorate of the Fontys Hogeschool. Other stakeholders in the project are the Physical Activity and Health lectorate of the Fontys Hogeschool and various companies.

The project will follow a user centred design approach in which various stakeholders, such as secondary school students, gaming experts and physical education teachers will be involved in all stages. The project will have a strong focus on validation of the concepts through design research and field studies especially with a view to develop generalizable knowledge about how to structure and facilitate this type of co-development process.

The PhD candidate will be participating in education, e.g. by supervising student projects on topics related to the PLAYfit project.

Requirements
- A Master in Industrial Design, Information Sciences, Media Studies, with a strong background in human-computer interaction and/or gaming.
- Affinity with the topics of persuasion and tangible or graphical user interfaces are valued.
- Also valued is prior experience with design research and with setting up and executing user tests.
- Excellent social and communicative skills and affinity with teaching are expected.
- The candidate should be fluent in Dutch; good knowledge of English is required.

Appointment and Salary
The appointment is for 4 years, starting January 1, 2010, subject to finalizing funding arrangements. As an employee of the university you will receive a competitive salary as well as excellent employment conditions (including excellent sport facilities and child care). The research in this project must be concluded with writing a PhD thesis. A salary is offered starting at EUR 2,042 per month (gross) in the first year and increasing up to EUR 2,492 per month (gross) in the last year. Moreover 8% bonus share (holiday supplement) and 8.3% bonus share (end-of-the-year allowance) are provided annually. Assistance for finding accommodation can be provided.

The PhD position will be carried out within the research group User-Centered Engineering (Industrial Design, TU/e) and the lectorate Serious Game Design (Fontys Hogeschool).

1. Data analyst for behavioral data
UIx is looking for a data analyst / information visualizer to join
projects in the area of interactive ubiquitous computing. We offer
several projects with large real world data sets from state-of-the art
interactive technologies. We expect the following from candidates:
* Strong, demonstrated skills in mathematics, statistics, and/or
quantitative methods
* Competence and interest in analyzing data from behavioral studies
* Interest and skill in development of tools for data collection,
analysis, and visualization
* Training in experimental design is a plus

2. Integrated sensor system developer
UIx seeks a person for developing a lightweight, wearable system for
integrating, synchronizing, processing and storing data from multiple
sensors, including video data for eye tracking. The required competencies
include capability for independent problem solving, experience from
designing and implementing embedded systems, familiarity of electronics
and embedded systems programming.

3. Interface developer
UIx is looking for interface developer interested in and having experience
in 1) Mobile applications, using sensors and/or multimodal processing
and/or 2) Ubiquitous installations involving multimodality processing
(including mixed reality). Competence in C++, OpenGL, QT computer vision,
psychophysiology, or multimodal processing is necessary.

4. Interaction designer
UIx is looking for interaction designer with interest and experience in
designing mobile applications, public installations, information

We are seeking a skilled usability specialist to join our Health
Services Virtual Organization (HSVO) project, funded under Canarie's
Network-Enabled Platforms (NEP) program.

The goal of the HSVO project is to create a sustainable research
platform for experimental development of shared ICT-based health
services, including supporting patient treatment planning and team and
individual preparedness in the operating room, emergency room, general
practice clinics, and patients' bedsides. This includes a collection
of functioning services supporting: patient treatment planning; team
and individual preparedness in the operating room, emergency room,
general practice clinics, and patients' bedsides. Existing resources
include a medical mannequin, various anatomical and physiological
datasets in association with viewer software, a virtual patient
simulator, and a dense camera array for dynamic control while viewing
both live and on-demand surgical procedures.

Duties

The usability specialist will be primarily responsible for designing
and conducting usability evaluation and user experience tests related
to our prototype systems being deployed for distributed medical
education. Frequent interaction with local and remote colleagues will
be expected, in particular with another UI professional, also working
at McGill. Some travel will be required, in particular for
participation in our project workshop in the summer. The position is
available immediately and runs through the end of August 2010.

Requirements

The successful candidate must have significant background in HCI with
demonstrated experience in usability testing. Excellent communication
skills and a proven ability to work with both technical and
non-technical team members is imperative.

Northwestern University

Northwestern University’s McCormick School of Engineering and Applied
Science, the Segal Design Institute, and the MMM program are seeking
applications for a senior person in design to become the McCormick
Co-Director of MMM. The MMM Program is a long-standing extremely
successful dual degree program run jointly by the School of
Engineering and the Kellogg School of Management, enrolling
approximately 60 students each year for its two-year duration. There
are two directors, one from Kellogg in operations, the other from
McCormick in design. Strong leadership is crucial for this position.
The candidate will also play a lead role in the Segal Design Institute
and/or the Farley Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation.

The Co-Director can either be a tenured faculty member or a Clinical

Graphical user interfaces (GUIs) are crucial in making computers accessible to
end users. However, different users often have different requirements and thus
need different GUIs, e.g. because of different skill levels, different devices
being used to display a GUI, or disabilities. Existing technologies for GUI
customization are either so complicated that they can only be used by
experienced software developers, or so limited that many user requirements are
not adequately supported.

For end users, GUI customization can only rely on very simple, direct means of
interaction, e.g. input gestures with the mouse such as dragging and dropping.
Despite this simplicity, customization should be flexible enough to satisfy all
user requirements. As a user customizes a GUI, e.g. by adjusting its layout or
taking out unused parts, the consistency of the GUI must be maintained.

Our goal is to develop a GUI customization approach for end users that can rival
the complex customization technologies currently only usable by software
developers. Customization operations will be specified algebraically, with clear

Postdoctoral Position: Community Annotation of a Resource for Protein
Structure and Function

The Resource for Biocomputing, Visualization, and Informatics at the
University of California,
San Francisco (UCSF) is seeking an enthusiastic and self-motivated
computational biologist
for a postdoctoral position conducting research on augmenting automated
function prediction
with community annotation of protein function. Knowledge of protein
function is key to
understanding a protein's role in biological processes and how loss of
function may impact
those processes. This project will enhance an existing, deeply curated
but limited resource,
the Structure-Function Linkage Database (sfld.rbvi.ucsf.edu), to take
advantage of the
expertise of the broader scientific community to dramatically increase
the breadth of our
knowledge without any decrease in the accuracy or precision of the
annotations provided.

We are seeking a candidate who has a strong computational background in
the life sciences,
with an interest in how to employ the power of the scientific community
to tackle large
problems that are beyond the scope of any given lab, resource, or
collaboration (e.g.
computer-supported cooperative work, or other disciplines related to
collaborative
environments). Experience developing and deploying web services for life
scientists is a plus,
as is a demonstrated skill programming in Python. The ideal candidate
will be familiar with
protein structure and function, especially the function of enzymes, but
outstanding applicants
who are new to the field will also be considered. Excellent
communication skills are essential.
The successful candidate will share a lively research environment with
students and postdocs
from multiple labs at UCSF and will be offered a competitive salary

of postdoctoral experience and accomplishments.

Nokia Research Center (NRC) is looking to recruit a Principal Researcher or Team Leader for the User Experience and Design team that focuses on new human practices and societal trends leading to mobile user experience prototypes and interaction guidelines. The team balances theoretical user experience research with practical research-through-design and prototyping projects. Our ideal candidate is a respected member of the global research community of the corresponding area and has the capacity to bring and lead new research topics in the areas of new user interfaces and mixed reality experiences.
