Hello people,

I am a design student at Coventry University and I am designing an Airship.

I would like to talk to Airship enthusiasts about what you think is important if airships were to come back into large scale production.

I want to create an airship capable of carrying heavy loads and would be interested in what you think I need to make this a realistic achievement. I am not an expert, but I would like to be well informed, so I have come to YOU. I have no target market in mind. I want to create something that can be used for lots of different uses; such as a luxury hotel, a mobile hospital and freight carrying. If I created an Airship that could be moulded into all these applications, it could be a relevent future vehicle, which has much better GREEN credentials that other modes of transport, such as the plane and boat.

Its the technical stuff, like structures, engines, volumes needed etc.. that i'm having trouble with so if you could help, it would be great.

looking forward to hearing from you

Patrick

Patrick:

How many years are you allowing for this course of study?

I'd start off by learning as much as I could about aircraft generally,
myself.

hey patrick,

i am a designer as well, and my thesis project was an airship. Take a look at it, perhaps it will help you.
google "Airship one" or my name.
 i started by researching deeply the area of aeronautics and aircraft construction. if you want i can send you my research materials.
i started with 2 rules of thumb:

calculate the payload you want to carry and then the volume of gas you will need
if you are going to use aerodynamic lift- estimate the cruising speed of the craft, and work with the lift equation:

L=(m*V(Sq)*s*cL)/2

m=mass
v=speed
s=wing area
cl-lift coefficient

good luck and contact me if you need more info

Hey Gosha,

Thanks for the link to your airship, its very impressive. I would be very interested in reading your research materials. I can email you my address if you dont mind.

Thanks

Patrick

Hi Patrick,

I'm Johannes, aeronautical engineer, working in the flight physics department of ZLT Zeppelin Luftschifftechnik. We get requests from time to time from design or aeronautics students, and I'm trying to give (hopefully) useful hints.

I'm running a yahoogroup on RC Airship Regattas (good fun!), where I posted some basics concerning airship conceptual design recently. Find the yahoogroup here
http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/rc_airship_regatta/
and the messages concerning the basics here
http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/rc_airship_regatta/message/505
and a correction here
http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/rc_airship_regatta/message/511

Please don't hesitate to put more particular questions.
Best, Johannes

Hey Johannes,

thanks for your help, your links have been a great help. I'm just trying to finalise what i want from my design, so i'm sure i'll have some more questions in the future.

thanks again

Patrick
