as at least Drew surely already knows :), there's a release candidate of
HSQLDB 1.9:
http://hsqldb.org.
While HSQL 1.9 won't work with an existing OOo in embedded mode (i.e.
storing its data into the .odb file), it would nonetheless be
interesting to know how 1.9 works with OOo in server mode.
If you're interested in helping us here, and want to play with the
combination OOo / HSQL 1.9, then your feedback would be welcome! In this
case, grab a copy of 1.9 RC 4 from
https://sourceforge.net/projects/hsqldb/files, and stress it a little
bit ...
