Hawk Ridge is operated by the Hawk Ridge Bird Observatory in the Hawk Ridge
Nature Reserve (a 50 ha reserve managed by the Duluth Audubon Society).
Sporadic counts occurred between 1951-1971, and systematic monitoring
started in 1972.  Counts are made from the ridgetop Main Overlook on
Skyline Parkway, 1.7 km from the lake, and from a research banding station
0.5 km down the ridge from Main Overlook.  Main Overlook is accesible by
car; the research station requires a short walk.
