Have database open and writeable while camping

Greetings all.

I was hoping to get word about this pretty quickly, as we are camping this weekend. The SA wants to have Troopmaster open but not in read-only while we are in the field. We use DotNet, so when he pulls down the database, we are good. But how does he keep it open and writeable, and shut down the laptop (several times) over the weekend (with zero internet access)?

Thanks,

In the DotNet settings, there is a checkbox in the upper left corner.  Un-check the box, and it will make your files active and editable.

Follow the steps below.

1.    Open TM on the laptop under dotnet to load your current files.
2.    Exit TroopMaster.  When it asks if you want to leave the files open, leave the files locked.
3.    When you boot the laptop on the overnight, pull it up in read-only mode, then un-ckeck the dot net box.
4.    When you return from the overnight, bring TroopMaster back up.  Make a backup of the files.
5.    Pull up the dot net settings page and re-check the box.  This will download the files off the net.  This is the reason you will want the backup made prior to activating.
6.    Restore your backup from step 4.
7.    Exit TroopMaster, and upload your files to the net.

Other possibilities include making a backup from a desktop in place of step 1, and restore it to the laptop after step 3.

Others may have different procedures, but this is what we use.

David

Drew:
The settings for the prompts on how to manage the database upon opening and
closing in PackMaster are under the menu:

"File" - "PackMaster DotNet"

I would assume TM would have something similar.

TM has similar settings. Go to menu File->TroopMaster DotNet...

Check "Prompt to upload/unlock"

When you exit you will get a popup dialog asking if you want to upload and unlock the database, or to keep the database locked. Choose to keep the database locked, and you can edit things locally to your heart's content. When you get back and want to upload all the changes to DotNet, choose the option to upload.

Voila!

I was going to refer to the manual in my post, but I forgot:

From section 3.16 in the manual:

There may also be times when you'll want to exit the program without unlocking the web
database. If so, select the "Prompt to upload/unlock database on exit" option. For
example, if you'd like to take data to meetings on a laptop computer and make updates,
you could choose to leave the web database locked until you come back home and upload
your changes. This not only prevents other users from making changes while you are
gone, it allows you to log back on later without overwriting your changes with the older
data from the FTP site.

I just don't totally shutdown my computer, I put it in hibernate mode which
saves the current windows environment and open files to the hard drive and
enters low power or zero power mode.  System restarts very quickly and
everything is where it was.  The other choice is to load / lock the
database, turn off Dotnet for the the weekend, then after camping, delete
the Server version and upload the laptop version.

You have the database locked, there's no reason to bring it up in
read-only mode.  Just keep working with it, and keep saying no to the
upload until you have internet access again.  Then the last step is:

What Greg says makes sense...I'll have to try that next time.

However, if you do find out once you get to the overnight that you've found that you forgot to lock the database, the other steps will do as a work-around, as long as the data on the laptop is the latest.  Just remember to make a backup before reactivating DotNet.

David
