Help with wonderland project

Hello everybody
I am teacher in a high school in Greece. I would like to create a virtual world for educational purpose, using the wonderland.
I am not an experienced developer. I would appreciate if anybody can help me giving some information how can i start (basic books, tutorials, videos etc. for the very beginners!). Searching the site i am little bit confused.
