I don't know if this is your situation, but real
SCSI tape problems have been reported before, and
are already fixed if you get a new snapshot.

BTST. In my experience life is much easier if you use only aws (or
het, of course) emulated tapes with your running Herc system, and just
copy between those and the real SCSI tapes offline using tapecopy.
With your configuration it doesn't look as though you are trying for
any kind of accurate retro-computing experience anyway...

I already tried one of the latest snapshot from 12 octb 2009 and got the same result.
Hercules is still working ok with the tape, I mean, I am able to use the unit
but, I get a lot of HHCTA024E, and with "mt" cmd there is no tape errors, and
there is no error report in any linux log.

Yes Tony!
I tried that and works ok.
So, I concluded it is realy a herc version problem, since I did that before
in herc older version and worked ok.
I'll try to find the older version and let the people know so someone can compare
and try to find de diffs.

Hi Fabio!

Please forgive me for asking, BUT...

I would like to confirm whether you obtained your snapshot from the correct
place.

Ivan Warren has TWO DIFFERENT snapshots web pages:

One is the OLD/INCORRECT place:

  http://www.ivansoftware.com/snapshots/snapdload.html

The other is the NEW/CORRECT place: [*]

  http://www.ivansoftware.com/snapshots/snapshots/

If you obtained your snapshot from the old location, then that explains the
incorrect behavior.

If you obtained your snapshot from the new location, then we have a new
problem that needs further investigation.

Yes, after compiling the last hercules version fron svn, there is no more hang or error messages.
The strange situation is that I have to issue a "devinit 500 /dev/nst0" in order to have hercules to mount the tape for the first time. After that, the "auto_scsi_mount" works ok.

Thought so.  :)

That IS odd.

scsimount should automatically engage as soon as Hercules is powered on if
there's no tape mounted and it's working correctly.

If there is already a tape mounted when you power on Hercules then scsimount
should, after initially engaging, immediately exit (since there IS after all
a tape already mounted). Do you see these messages in your Hercules log?

Since this (second scenario, tape already mounted at Hercules power on)
occurs *before* your guest operating system is IPL'ed however, it of course
does not receive the attention interrupt that is automatically generated
(since there's no operating system running to receive it! And as soon as you
IPL all pending interrupts are cleared anyway).

But if your guest operating is working correctly it SHOULD automatically
query that tape device as part of its system initialization -- as long as
that device address is in its I/O configuration and as long as it's
configured to be "online at startup" of course.

Are you sure you have your guest o/s configured properly? What does your
guest operating system's i/o configuration look like for tape device 500?

RE: Hercules hangs during init with real scsi tape

My system looks ok!
It is working perfectly with the scsi 3490, and
looks odd, but after the first mount with the manual "devinit 500 /dev/nst0"
it goes all alone.
my   auto_scsi_mount is set to 30.
the tape unit is not mounted during ipl.
I'll do more testing with "mt /dev/nst0 status" before and after
mounting the tape to try getting more info.
