>< new stuff snipped>

Mario had sent some info off forum to me earlier last week. Unfortunately we had a death in the family which delayed my investigation into his situtation.

His problem is reproducible by renaming the CYGWIN directory installed in the C: drive. Just like LINUX spreading stuff over various directories, CYGWIN, for the Turnkey at least, is expected to be on the C: drive. When it isn't located at c:\cygwin, the executable cannot find the stuff where the environment variable TERMINFO is pointing to "\usr\share\terminfo".

Regardless of whether the integrated console is utilized or not, he still needs a TSO Session which is provided by c3270 as well.

His choices would be to make sure where CYGWIN directory ( should be on c drive at c:\cygwin ) and revert the startterm.bat which he had modified and use c3270 supplied with the Turnkey CD.

Download and install wc3270 as either the no-install installation or install as a windows application.

Obtain other tn3270 client software.
> Best Regards,
> Mario
- - - old notes snipped - - -

You need more of an explanation of the changes
instead of us saying do this and do that.

The problem is that the old MVS 3.8j required
that at least one console be attached before MVS
could boot. Weird but that was thirty years ago.

Two of the console types were CRT and line-mode.
To start Hercules, attach a CRT, then IPL MVS took
coordination and you would need to learn CRT console
operation. Using the line-mode Hercules integrated
console solves the problems. With a properly
configured system, you only need to access the
console when you want to play on the console.
Your MVS shutdown procedure may need to be started
on the console.

To get rid of the CRT consoles until you want
to play on the MVS CRT console, comment out 0010
and 0011 in your hercules configuration file.
You could instead move them to be after the TSO
terminals starting with 00C0 so you don't connect
to them when trying to get to TSO. Naming the
CRT consoles is another method.

To use a Hercules intergrated console for a
console, change your 0009 console from:
0009 3215
to:
0009 3215-c / noprompt
This does not work with the really old Hercules
that was on the TK3 CD but you said that you were
running a more current release.

You may also want to automate IPL by updating
your hercules.rc to add two lines near the end:
ipl 148
/r 00,clpa

My hercules.rc changes often. It currently has:
# t+00c0
# t+0483
# devlist
automount list
logopt timestamp
panrate 1000
ipl 148
# devlist
/r 00,clpa

startterm.bat is not needed because you do not need
to connect another console after the Hercules integrated
console. Your system starts acting like a real system.
You then start startmvs.bat, start a TN3270 session and
log on and off of TSO as much as you like. If you want
to play console, use the integrated one or connect to
0010 and vary 010,console to begin. No more IPL timing
problems. No more startterm.bat without proper delays
problem. No more needing five CRTs to log on to TSO
or to enter console commands.

The option of you using the quick start procedure that
Paul suggested is also available. Whether you want to
debug TK3, do programming, or other is up to you.
>>after c3270 executes, the screen shows briefly and it
>>goes away and there is no connection.
> Ok, this symptom (closing window) is not the normal
>c3270 problem that I was trying to fix with my
>original suggestion.
> However,
> 1. Try putting in a "sleep 1" before the second
>terminal, since you have Cygwin available.
> 2. Try running from a command prompt to see if
> Also, it's a lot easier to get things to work if you
> use an integrated console. Here's my configuration:
> #
> # Device section - MVS Consoles and Terminals
> #
> # By default, just have a single integrated console, which is
> # to see a "normal" console, then uncomment 0010 and start a
> # terminal emulator
> #
> 0009 3215-C / noprompt
> #0010 3270 # Master console (3270) # 1
> #0011 3270 # Master console (3270) # 2
> 00c0 3270 # Terminal session # 1
> 00c1 3270 # Terminal session # 2
> 00c2 3270 # Terminal session # 3
> 00c7 3287
> 01c7 3287
> BFN. Paul.

That is a good configuration file and ends the need
for startterm.bat which ends all of the complaints about
all of the startterm.bat problems. After you get up and
running, you can play with CRT type consoles if you like.
CRT consoles do not require the slash before commands.
/d a,l becomes just d a,l

I would also suggest dumping CygWin and c3270.

Since Paul recommends:
"Actually, what I really recommend is TK3 quick start
in the files section of the hercules-os380 group."
then so would I.

It might not be the best link but one for wc3270 is:
and page-down to PF7 and PF8 but the directory
documented my be confusing or wrong. For Vista
and newer, I think it should be folder:
C:\Users\your.log.on.id\AppData\Roaming\wc3270\
older systems probably use:
> Thank you for you assistance. I tried your suggestion using
> only one entry only for the 3270. It connects to telnet
> as before and the one entry for the 3270 terminal after c3270
> executes, the screen shows briefly and it goes away and
> there is no connection.

Ok, this symptom (closing window) is not the normal
c3270 problem that I was trying to fix with my
original suggestion.

However,

1. Try putting in a "sleep 1" before the second
terminal, since you have Cygwin available.

2. Try running from a command prompt to see if
c3270 gives any error message when it terminates.

3. Look closely at the opening and quickly closing
c3270 window to see if there is any writing on that.

Also, it's a lot easier to get things to work if you
use an integrated console. Here's my configuration:

#
# Device section - MVS Consoles and Terminals
#

# By default, just have a single integrated console, which is
# what has the most chance of actually working. If you want
# to see a "normal" console, then uncomment 0010 and start a
# terminal emulator
#
0009 3215-C / noprompt
#0010 3270 # Master console (3270) # 1
#0011 3270 # Master console (3270) # 2
00c0 3270 # Terminal session # 1
00c1 3270 # Terminal session # 2
00c2 3270 # Terminal session # 3

Sequence is:

Steps 2-3 can be repeated for more terminals, or a
sleep can be used, but I recommend starting by getting
a single terminal to work.

Use IEBCOPY to restore the first file, and look at the $$$DOC
to use SMP to install the changes, or do things manually. SMP is
most convenient. The first file contains all the JCL you'll need.
>
> I think you'll find that was a joke, and that he was
> just listing the legal OSes so that the original
> poster knew what the scope was.
>
> > P.S. Care to share your copy of CP/67 and the hercules
> > mods required for running it?
>
> If it's not already available, it's very unlikely he
> has that either.
>
> I was surprised that he cited old versions of MVS
> and DOS, and missed out VM/370 (and 380), which will
> may confuse the original poster, who may think he
> needs to go back older than necessary. But I think
> the joke was more for regular readers than the
> original poster. The whole story about "testing
> disaster recovery and deleting all trace" is part
> of that joke.
>
> I remember someone telling me that he had backups
> of his friend's C64 disks, and from time to time
> he would pull them out to make sure the backup
> still worked.
>
> Anyway, the point is that telling a subtle joke is
> not hypocrisy. And I believe debates about running
> possibly-illegal software are off-topic here, and
> in either case, no-one here is IBM's enforcer. :-)
>
> BFN. Paul.
>

Laddie,Paul,

of course it was a joke: I was amused to see a question about the possibility that IBM could give free licenses of z/OS when there are hundredths of posts excluding that for the past, the present and the future.
The citation of CP/67 instead of VM/370 as well as of OS/360 instead of MVS was to enforce the 'legality' of the OSes I used; as Paul correctly deduced I haven't neither CP/67 nor the Hercules mods needed to run it.
I was very displeased to have been charged of hypocrisy, a 'crime' that in some countries (luckily not in Italy) is punished with death.

Regards.

Hello!
This stops as of tomorrow Morning, 9AM GMT.

Z/OS running via Hercules isn't an accepted option as far as IBM is
concerned. In fact the mere mention of the fact makes all of them want to
hide.

Currently the only accepted option is indeed IBM accepted hardware. Complete
with pricing and hardware requirements as appropriate.

There was an interesting discussion on a related issue on the L-390 list,
and it was tabled after we realized that the resident IBM specialists were
getting rather unhappy.
> >
> > Dear All,
> >
> > I have installed and run MVS38J on my windows machine running Hercules.

I would like
> to find out where can I download a z/OS version and how can I obtain free
license or at
> least demo license.
> >
> > Moreover, have anyone done installation of z/OS on Hercules? Does it
have ISPF and
> TSO/E capabilities? Is there a windows emulation version of the HMC for
Management of
> Hercules?
> >
> >
> >
>
> Yes, z/OS can run under hercules. Yes, it has ISPF and TSO/E.
> Look here: http://www-03.ibm.com/systems/z/resources/swprice/
> for license information and pricing. It's not cheap and it may also
> require IBM approved hardware.

Neither thing is available. Your choices are:

1. US$4000/yr for ADCD.

2. Bootlegged ADCD from emule etc.

3. There has been progress on MVS 3.8j as a
programming environment, depending on what you
are after.

> Moreover, have anyone done installation of z/OS on

Yes, all of that has been done and is available if
you bootleg it.

> Is there a windows emulation version of the HMC for
> Management of Hercules?

No idea about that one.

The cheapest LEGAL way is:

1)  Become an IBM certified ISV;

2) Buy an IBM zPDT emulator;

3) Buy an ADCD z/OS package;

4) Run it on Hercules as a disaster recovery test.

The minimum cost to get zPDT is:

$ 3,750,00 (per year - the cheapest version for 1090-L01)
$ 299,00 for USB key (1090)
$ 900,00 for ADCD z/OS
$ 0,00 for z/VM 5.4 Startup
$ 4,949,00 Total

> Moreover, have anyone done installation of z/OS on Hercules? Does it have ISPF and TSO/E capabilities? Is there a windows emulation version of the HMC for Management of Hercules?
>

I tried step 4 on behalf of a friend of mine who owns a FLEX-ES to verify the feasibility of making Hercules a disaster recovery machine; everything worked fine; then I cancelled every trace of that illegal OS from my PC ;-)

Now I run only legal OS, like OS/360, DOS/360 ,TOS/360, TSS/360 and CP/67.

To manage Hercules remotely I use VPN and a remote access software (Radmin). It should have a web server but I never tried it.

Regards.
Look here: http://www-03.ibm.com/systems/z/resources/swprice/
for license information and pricing. It's not cheap and it may also
require IBM approved hardware.

Neither thing is available. Your choices are:

1. US$4000/yr for ADCD.

2. Bootlegged ADCD from emule etc.

3. There has been progress on MVS 3.8j as a
programming environment, depending on what you
are after.

> Moreover, have anyone done installation of z/OS on
> Hercules? Does it have ISPF and TSO/E capabilities?

Yes, all of that has been done and is available if
you bootleg it.

> Is there a windows emulation version of the HMC for
> Management of Hercules?

No idea about that one.

Greetings,

Just an FYI for those interested in TSO/VTAM mods
for MVS 3.8.

There is a new rework of the ZP60009 usermod which
can be downloaded from
www.prycroft6.com.au/vs2mods

The change is to improve support for LOGON RECONNECT
when the new screen has different dimensions from the
old screen.

With the small changes of this rework, it is possible for a
TSO app to monitor the screen dimensions using the
GTTERM macro, and take appropriate action if the
dimensions change. A good time for a fullscreen app
to do this might be when the RESHOW AID is detected.

Before this rework, GTTERM would continue to present
the old screen's dimensions to the GTTERM issuer.

If you want to apply the rework, the first step is to
perform an SMP RESTORE of any existing ZP60009
usermod before running the job supplied in the
download file. (Change the JOB card to suit.)

There is no need to reIPL between the RESTORE
and the new install. After the supplied job is run
reIPL with a CLPA. But of course, you knew all that.

And drifting the topic ever so slightly, the next release
of REVIEW should tolerate a reconnect to a screen with
different dimensions (under MVS 3.8 or z/OS) in any
function including edit. The one glitch will be that a
browse will show the browsed data from the first record
after such a reconnect. (I wonder if there's any chance
I can blame Bill for that one... <joke>)

Have fun!

Cheers,
Greg

Never used FLEX-ES, but I'll take a stab. Assuming the Flex host
machine is running a Unix-like operating system, you could install a
VNC server or NX[1] on the *nix side. Ideally you would tunnel the VNC
traffic (NX apparently does this by default) over an SSH connection to
the Flex host, since VNC does not offer encryption and has a weak
password scheme. If you've never used either, I would say VNC is
probably easier to setup since it can be deployed and run without root
access. Once it's setup, the Flex host's desktop will appear on your
local machine and you should be able to interact with the master
console.

A friend has a flex-es system (I know that's not hercules-390). He's given me a telnet login and an ssh login. I also have x-windows (via cygwin). I'm able to access the native operating system ... unix, and do things there by using both telnet and ssh from my home PC.

I'm also able to get to the system via TN3270, although I don't have a TSO login, which is another whole story. If I did, I'd have a way to get to the console. Anyway.

I want to access the zOS main console, and I understand it runs (appears) in a x-window on the machine.

Can anybody explain to me, if it's possible, how to access the console from my PC here? Either off list to my private e-mail, or on the list if you think others might be interested.

Hello!
(Current members may ignore this message, or read it anyway for an
interesting view on the whole group.)
And Welcome to this group.

All of you have been granted an exciting privilege. And what privilege is
this you are all asking? Why to shape how much further to take an older
release of MVS. This is the same operating system that is found in advanced
form everywhere running sites who with a fellow operating system, are
largely responsible for the banking and regular sales via credit card
activities we take for granted. Together with one which most of us probably
won't have anything to do which is named simply TPF and a descendant of
DOS/VS they are busy buying and selling stocks, and even the aforementioned
banking and regular credit card activities. And these transactions also take
into account our trips on vacation. And there are more.

What will all of that mean to the computer hobbyist? Probably nothing. But
it does explain in a nutshell why this group is one that rarely gets
involved in trivial discussions, or even worse suffers from receiving junked
e-mail advertising nothing important from members who knew better.

Please consider reading the entire contents of the messages stored on site
before sending out something. Further along please consider examining the
stored messages for answers to your problems before posting something. It is
possible that your question was asked and answered even before your decision
to join.

In addition before sending anything out to the group, please ask each of
you, is this message going to add to the sum total of knowledge concerning
MVS, (or even Z/OS) will it even create an interesting discussion? I would
like to limit our discussions to on-topic postings, and generally keep the
signal to noise threshold quite low.

Also please consider explaining exactly who you are and including a very
brief bio. (To be sent to me only.) This is for those of you who forgot to
do so inside the comment block on the request form.
--

> Downloaded a fresh copy of wc3270 non-install version this morning
> and it does not enable 132 wide display. IIRC x3270 under linux
> does however ( it has been a while since I tinkered with this ).

Re-visiting this this morning, I looked back to when I last conversed with Paul Mattes concering a standalone distributable of wc3270 for inclusion in a future TK CD. It looks to have been in April and a solution for 132 selection was limited by a windows glitch IIRC. The non-install solution he came up with was slightly different than what we had been exchanging ideas about. When the initial wc3270 wizard is run and then wc3270 started with the init file as it's argument, 132 column support becomes available.

>Greg's modifications don't utilize the logmode data and instead query the 3270 client as to what it is
capable of displaying ( IIRC ). The switch between various modes is automatic without needing the entry
of "term xxxxx".

Right on!

After logon, the terminal screen should have the appropriate

Backed up all my volumes.

Next thing I did was update Queue to P6.2007.Jan.01 and RPF to 1.5.3
because from what I read they each have 132 col support.

Then I made the following recommended changes from Paul to
SYS1.VTAMLST(ATCSTR00).
IOBUFF=(020,3992,10,F)
PPBUF=020,3992,10,F)

Unrealted to 132 col I made some changes to TSO APPL and NETSOL so I asm
the VTAM tables.

And did a IPL

Applied UMODs ZP60008 and ZP60009.

Did a IPL with clpa and everything worked.
> Hi Frank,
>
> Could you recap the steps you took to make it work with wc3270?
