Dear Doc-Bug-Hunter,

Here are some hints for the site:
http://lilypond.org/doc/v2.13/Documentation/alternate-input

It's seems, that you don't want to use screenshots from
project homepages? If I should provide you some "handmade"
screenshots (tuxguitar, musescore, canorus), I would be
glad to have a hint where to upload these. Or a mail
adress to sent to?

Thanks for your good work and
kindest regards
Chrisch

* Denemo
Link: http://www.denemo.org
Denemo runs with MS Windows
[Source: http://www.denemo.org/index.php/Get_Denemo ]

You writing about denemo at the top of this list,
so it's redundant to have under "others".

* Texshop
Link: http://www.uoregon.edu/~koch/texshop/
add #desktoppub to Link for "avaible at":
(the add of #desktoppub will help to find the right
subjekt on this long page.)

* Lilykde
Homepage include some good sreenshots.

* Canorus
is still missing at this list:
Link: http://canorus.org
Homepage include some good sreenshots.

"Canorus runs on Linux, Windows and MacOSX."

BUT: "Warning: Canorus is still beta-software and is
not usable for serious
work! Testers and early users are welcome though :)"

* Tuxguitar
offers versions for Gnu/Linux, Windows, Mac OS X, BSD
and a live "Java web
start" for trying tuxguitar online
With Lilypondexport it's like tabbing the music and
transform it in notes.

* Musescore
offers versions for GNU/Linux, Windows, Mac OS X.
"Import and export of MusicXML and Standard MIDI Files (SMF)"
Export to Lilypond. Import from Lilypond is experimental.
Import Capella-Files.

I'm totally fine with using screenshots from project homepages.
The problem is that nobody wants to work on that page.

Could you send a patch?

Definitely -- could we get a patch?

... ditto for everything else.  They look like exactly what I'd
like to have on this page.

I'm very sorry!  I forgot to mention that we don't use HTML
directly; we build the pages from the texinfo markup-language.
The source files for the website are in
  Documentation/general/

More details about editing texinfo is in the Contributor's Guide.
I'll go write some info about working on the website, but the
fundamental issue of "edit the texinfo" is all you really need to
know.

Could you try only changing one or two things on the page, then
send me a patch for that?  I'd like to check that the technical
side of things is working before you spend much time re-creating
your work.

Sorry again,
- Graham

Correct.

(we are working on a gui to make this process easier, but it's not
ready yet)

The info in CG 1.3.1 will only apply if you have checked out the
entire git tree.  Simple output like "diff old new" is perfectly
fine for me*.

* note: some people want contributors to produce a patch with git,
since this adds more info (such as your name + email address), but
I don't think this is necessary.  If you're familiar with diff,
then by all means use that tool.

I will be at a conference for the next few days, and might not
have internet access.  If anybody else wants to view + commit any
patches from Christian, that would be nice; otherwise, I'll do it
when I return.

Cheers,
- Graham

Uuh, please always say

  diff -u old new

to get a diff with surrounding context.  Without that, it is easy that
somebody has extended the docs in parallel, and your patch gets
applied at the wrong place where the line is accidentally identical
(`diff' intelligently tries to find a matching line in case there is
some fuzziness), but the context differs.

Here are the first small changes of the file
  Documentation/general/introduction.itexi

I generate the diff with the "-u"-option Werner mentioned above.

Until the technical side is checked, I will wait with more contributions and
questions.

Thanks!  In the future, please avoid changing the filename --
leave it as "introduction.itely" (with possibly a .old or .new
file as well).

Other than that, it looks great.  Committed, and will appear
whenever 2.13.8 is out.

Sorry for the delay.

Cheers,

Thanks, added!

Please note that this file is now in the directory
  Documentation/web/introduction.itely
Other than the general->web alteration, nothing has changed about
the way to work on this file.  :)

I don't quite follow... I suspect that there's a CSS problem,
which is unfortunate since I'm not really familiar with CSS.

>    - added names for links

I'm fine with this, but make sure that we have a link for which
the displayed name is the same as the link -- this is important in
case somebody prints the PDF; the paper version obviously won't
have a clickable url.  :)

(I'm not certain if you realized that the .itexi file you edit is
processed into HTML, PDF, and info formats)

>  * What means the "@"  in some content of @uref?

In texinfo, @ means "this is a command".  If you write
  uref{blahblah}
then it will be interpreted (and printed) as literal text; if you
write:
  @uref{blah,blah}
then texinfo knows that you want to make a "universal reference".

>  * the itemitze about apps exporting LilyPond
>    - reorder to have all non-graphical tools together

Ok.  We're now getting to more interesting questions -- how should
we present this information?

The top part of the page is somewhat in "most recommended" format.
People will begin reading from the top, so the best way to make
sure people notice something is to put it at the top.
Unfortunately, we can't put *everything* at the top, so we need to
make choices.

My thought is that Frescobaldi should get its own box (just like
lilypondtool), and be moved between lilypondtool and emacs/vim.
But I'm content to leave these judgements up to you -- you're a
very good and careful contributor, so I'm sure that you'll make
good decisions.

>  * screenshots for MuseScore, Canorus, Tuxguitar,
>     Rosegarden, Noteedit
>    - This will lead to a bad alignment between text and

This is a CSS issue, so I'm not quite certain, sorry.  :(

>  * Would you like to see all apps including

>     importing formats?
>  * Would you like to differ the lily-exporting
>     apps in graphical and command line tools?

Hmm.  I definitely think we should indicate graphical /
command-line tools, but I'm not certain what the best way to do
that is.  Maybe something like:
  box: denemo
  box: lilypondtool
  box: frescobaldi
  box: emacs/vim
  box: all other graphical tools
  box: all other command-line tools
?
I'm only making a suggestion here -- as far as I'm concerned, you
have the final say on this matter.

As for the export/include formats... hmm.  My initial vote would
be "no", but maybe it's worth it.  My concern (as always) is the
length / amount of information.  From years of writing
documentation, I know that the more info you present, the less
people read.

The general idea of this page is to present a quick overview of
each editor, so that somebody can decide which one to try without
having to try all of them.  We need to make guesses about the
length of text description, size of screenshot (or whether to
include a screenshot at all!), and lists of operating systems,
graphical/text tool symbols, etc.

I'm happy to discuss these issues, but I want to make sure that
you know that you make the final decision.  If you disagree with
me, that's fine -- you're in charge of this page, so do whatever
you think is best.  :)

>  * Using the icons/symbols for each alternate
>     input application to help the recognition?

I like this idea!  Unfortunately, unless you are an artist, it
might take a bit more work than you realize -- we need to make
sure we use copyright-permissive icons.  If you find some symbols
published under the Creative Commons, that would be good.

Cheers,
- Graham

Ok, here the next few changes:
 * new "stand alone" box for frescobaldi
 * LilyKDE before TeXShop to mention graphical first
 * new svn link for TextMate (still ignored)
 * new box for "Other programs can export LilyPond code"
   * order tools using subsubsections:
      first graphical, second text/command line

Yes, it's CSS related. The new box for "Other programs can export LilyPond
code" will avoid the collision.

I'm used to PDF with hyperlinks from LaTeX. But a printout with clickable url
is still science fiction ;-) This become part of the todo list.

Sorry, I should have read the manual before asking. I meant the "@/" like in:
@uref{http://@/www@/.rosegardenmusic@/.com,Rosegarden}
-> They allow page breaks in the printout.
