Hopefully an easy answer??

Hi,

Was hoping to get started on some ActionScript tonight and was wanting
to use the flash.* API but I have read that this only comes with the
Flash IDE. As an open-source advocate, I hate parting with cash so does
anyone know of a project which mimics the flash API?

Thanks in advance,

Tim

Hi Tim.

All Flash Player intrinsic classes are kept in the flash.* packages. This means that they are native to the Flash Player and therefore you do not need to buy Flash. However, the classes kept in the mx.* packages are part of Flash (the product you buy from Adobe), so there might be some licence issues involved with that. You can do anything with MTASC with the need to buy Flash, you just might need to build some things from scratch in ActionScript.

Other than that Tim, open source isn't about not paying money or as you state "parting with cash". It is about the "freedom" of choice or better described by the FSF's slogan; "Free as in freedom, not free as in free beer". You are more than welcome to donate (or part with cash) towards MTASC (or any of Nicolas's other "free" projects).
