Host OS (OS X 10.6.1) panic when booting 8.0-RC2 in VirtualBox 3.0.10

Hello,

I have been experiencing reproducible kernel panics in Mac OS X 10.6.1
when booting 8.0-RC1 and -RC2 (amd64) in a VirtualBox VM.

I had a (mostly pristine) 7.2-RELEASE running in this VM and tried to
upgrade to 8.0-RC2 with freebsd-update. after the second
freebsd-update install and reboot, when the loader tries to load the
kernel, it fails

a) if I select boot with ACPI, it stops with "ACPI autoload failed -
no such file or directory"
b) if I select boot without ACPI, the host OS panics (grey screen of death).

This is reproducible and independent of whether hardware
virtualization (VT-x) is active or not.

I remember having the same problem with -RC1, but did not follow up on
that and instead reverted to a snapshot of the VM just before the
upgrade due to lack of time then.

VBox.log for both cases and the OS X panic report are attached.

I have created a ticket in the VirtualBox bugtracker for this [1]

I will try a clean installation now.

Suggestions are welcome...

thx, Matthias

This does not happen in a new, freshly installed VM. Now it hangs at
usbus initialization, but I suppose that's a different story (the
pains of using USB with VirtualBox, they never end).

Any ideas what went wrong with the update?

thx, M.

It could well be that a bug in FreeBSD is triggering the bug in VirtualBox,
but we're unlikely to make much headway debugging the FreeBSD bug (if any)
until the bug in VirtualBox is diagnosed/fixed.  I'm not sure what the normal
debugging procedure for vbox panics on Mac OS X is, but I'd suggest making a
backup copy of the bad VM so that you can trigger it on demand later.

This, on the other hand, could be our bug; there's a new USB stack in 8.0.  I
suggest creating a new thread for that issue with a usb-related subject line
to make sure the right folk see it.

And if you turn off USB support in virtual box?

Hi,

I just booted FreeBSD 8.0 RC-2 the live ISO in Virtual box (3.0.8) on a MAC
and I don't see any problems. Are you sure that the /boot/kernel/ is free from
stale modules from FreeBSD 7.x ?

No need, the problem resolved itself by de- and reactivating USB in
VBox (thanks HPS). This is definitely not a FreeBSD-related problem, I
have been having problems accessing a specific USB drive from within
VMs, both FreeBSD and OpenSolaris, and that one appears to have been
the problem here as well.

So, the current status is: The cleanly installed 8.0-RC2 works, the
updated one not. So this is either my bad or the freebsd-update did
something wrong. I'll try to find out what and keep you posted.

thx for all the suggestions, M.

If they're supposed to be the same binary kernel (check the version
string/etc on early boot), then it might be worth simply doing md5
sums and seeing if they are the same (likewise loader binaries and
kernel modules).

Is there any chance you have non-base system kernel modules installed
in /boot/modules or the like?
