How can I globally watch every change to every page on a tiki site?

by Desilets, Alain :: Rate this Message:

I want to configure my tiki site so users can say that they want to be notified of any change made to any page on the site. How can I do this? Pascal St-Jean and I have been looking for 20 mins now.

I know that there is a permission tiki_p_admin_notifications. But granting this permission to all registered users seems dangerous, since it allows them to enable and disable notifications for all users of the system.

I also know about User Watches. They are enabled on the site. But it does not seem to provide a way to globally watch all wiki pages. If I go to the My Watches section, all I see is a list of pages that I am watching. Nothing that would allow me to specify to watch a whole site.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thx.

Re: [Tikiwiki-users] How can I globally watch every change to every page on a tiki site?
Hum... I am looking for a  way to do email notificication of changes, not RSS.

I know I have done that in the past, and I'm pretty sure it was from the My Watches pages.

Indeed, if I enable the preference User watches translations in the i18n admin panel and then go to MyWatch, I now see a Add Watch section, which has a picklist for the kinds of events to watch. It only has one element: "a new page is created in a language".

If I disable the User watches translation preference, the Add Watch section disappears from My Watches.

Sounds like a bug, so I have logged a bug report.

Thx anyway.

Looking for volunteer testers for Tiki 4.0 release

by Desilets, Alain :: Rate this Message:

Reply to Author | View Threaded | Show Only this Message

Dear tiki users,

As you may know, the Tiki development team will be releasing Tiki 4 soon:

    http://dev.tikiwiki.org/Tiki4

But much work needs to be done in the coming weeks to produce that release.
One of those things is continuous testing, to help our developers make sure
that they are always moving forward without breaking functionality that used
to work before.

THIS IS WHERE YOU CAN HELP!!!

We are looking for 5 advanced Tiki users with admin experience who would be willing
to put 1-3 hours per week over the course of two months, to test the 5 major Tiki
profiles and make sure that they remain in good working condition throughout
the release effort.

Essentially, you would be responsible for testing one of those 5 profiles,
once or twice a week, following detailed test scenarios and verifying that
Tiki works as it should in those scenario. You would also report any
discrepancy to the release team.

An example of what we mean by test scenarios, is the following Test plan
for the Collaborative Multilingual Terminology profile:

   http://profiles.tikiwiki.org/Collaborative_Multilingual_Terminology#Test_plan

If you are interested in volunteering for this, or any other tasks related
to Tiki 4 release, please contact me, or add your name and contact
information to this page:

  http://dev.tikiwiki.org/Tiki4

Thank you,

Alain Désilets

Does the tiki-user_watches.php  page do what you expect ?
It doesn't show in the menu when "display mytiki menu" is not active,
but it is operational when "my watches" is active.

No, it does not do what I expect, at least not on trunk.

On Trunk, when I go to tiki-user_watches.php, I see an Add Watches section with an Event picklist. In the picklist, the only two items I see are:

- Select an event type
- A new page is created in a language

I would expect to see other event types like:

- A page is modidified or deleted
- A forum posting is created
Etc.

Note that before I activated User watches translation preference, this Add Watches section and the Event picklst did not appear at all.

For example, if I go to my watches page on this site (which is running 3.0):

http://jiamcatt.ourwiki.net/

I see a Watches section with a Show picklist, and this picklist has a number of events in it. In particular:

  Wiki_pages_changed

This is what I expect to happen on trunk too, but it doesn't.

Re: [Tikiwiki-devel] How can I globally watch every change to every page on a tiki site?

As far as I know, Alain, you can right now do this through rss (but not
email watches). I guess that tiki code needs to be hacked in order to
add the feature from admin notificacions (watch by email all changes to
wiki pages to the site) to "My Tiki > My Watches" in order to allow
users to watch changes to the whole tiki by email.

In case it helps such small "pointing"... (from a non-php coder)

Very strange - in the tiki3 code there is only
A new page is created in a language
that is enabled if feature_user_watches_translations (admin->community)
If you have access to the code of jiamcatt.ourwiki.net - perhaps you can
commit - it will be nice

I thought we were discussing 3.2. My answers certainly refer to 3.2 :-)

Can you confirm that you have activated both "User Watches
Translations" and "User Watches" ? My guess is, only "User Watches
Translations" is active, since you see only the items relevant to it.

The other possibility would be that we have a regression in 4.x
relative to 3.2 but I don't know enough about 4.x to comment about
that.

I know this can be done, because it's enabled on this site:

   http://jiamcatt.ourwiki.net/tiki-index.php

which, I believe, runs Tiki 3. And I'm pretty sure that nobody hacked that code.

Oh well, I guess I'll have to dig through the code to find out how this can be enabled, cause I sure can't find it in the doc, and nobody seems to know how.

Thx anyway. I don't like resorting to looking at the code if I suspect that someone out there already knows the answer, so your answer is helpful in that way.

I don't have access to the code of that site but will ask. My guess is that this is a regression. I am pretty sure that I was able to register for all wiki page changes back with Tiki 2.

Sorry about that. At first, I thought it was just a "Stupid User Error"
on my part, and didn't assume that it was a problem with trunk.

Yes, both "User Watches" and "User Watches Translations" are active.

Yet, when I go to My Watches, I only see the following event in the
event list:

A new page is created in a language.
