How does Musicbrainz decide on the list of  related artists when you
look at an artist ?

thanks, Paul

It used to come from AgentArts (not sure whether by feed, or installed
analytic software); but now they've been bought by FAST so I have no
idea where our relationship stands (or whether that matters, if we have
a license to use installed software).

I don't think it's been updated for a long time though, as there are
artists I've worked on over the last year that are very well ARed,
compilation credited etc but don't appear to have any similarity data.
Of course I'm making assumptions about the input to the similarity
calculation here.

Would be quite interested in knowing where we're at on this as it's been
asked about a few times in the forums as well.

I thought Lukas did some work on his own similar artists system?

That was for similar folksonomy tags, although it shouldn't be hard to
use a similar approach for artists (using tags, labels and appearances
on VA releases).

I've actually removed related artists from the upcoming release
because the data is so bad/out of date.

After this release I am going to start providing log information to a
bay area start-up that is going to generate much better relationship
data on an ongoing basis.

Stay tuned!

Sorry, but I am unwilling to talk more about things that haven't
hatched yet. Managing expectations is important in open source as it
is in other more classic businesses.

I'll say that these people are pursuing US for supplying this new
feature. :-)

Stay tuned!
