How far is 1000 words? How far does the "average" person's pen tip travel after writing words?
I want to know because I want to know how long a pen that claims it can write for 2km will last me. -- [ solarwind ] -- http://solar-blogg.blogspot.com/ -- http://www.piclist.com PIC/SX FAQ & list archive View/change your membership options at http://mailman.mit.edu/mailman/listinfo/piclist |

Or the equivalent of 1 x picture. -- Brent Brown, Electronic Design Solutions 16 English Street, St Andrews, Hamilton 3200, New Zealand Ph: +64 7 849 0069 Fax: +64 7 849 0071 Cell: +64 27 433 4069 eMail: brent.brown@... -- http://www.piclist.com PIC/SX FAQ & list archive View/change your membership options at http://mailman.mit.edu/mailman/listinfo/piclist |

I think you're one digit off. 20,000 words * 0.01 m/word = 200 m. Also, 1 cm/word sounds awfully short. I would guess it's more like 4 cm/word. Re: How far is 1000 words?I think when they say it can write 2km, they probably mean a straight
line? I figure so, because they would know how much ink gets released per ball "roll", probably based on it's density or something, and thus the ballsize would determine how many rolls it will take to clear the volume of the ink. And with that they can calculate how many meters it would take to empty the pen. So I would say about 8mm/letter avg. and 5letters/word avg. so it's about 4cm/word. With 100000cm per km that's 200000cm per 2km, thus 50000 words, give or take a few? I write an avg of 15 words per line, with 31 lines/page that's 465 words per page, so the pen would probably last me 107 pages, or 3.5x30page writing pads. Sounds quite good. Further I think it's just an advertising scam, since 2km sounds a lot. The average pen doesn't last that long if you write a lot. Deep Discharge Batteries ?Hi, does anyone know if common lawn tractor batteries are deep discharge ? I want to use a 12 volt battery to power a mobile robot. The two motorss I am using say the stall current is 10 amps. I am looking at the local pep boys and they have a decent selection of lawn & tractor batteries. They also have a resonably priced marine battery (I know that is deep discharge ) and some motorcycle/atv batteries. Are motorcycle/atv batteries deep discharge ? I think they are because they list the same battery for motorcycles/atvs/ and some electric scooters. So my thinking is Car Battery -- not deep discharge Marine Battery -- Deep Discharge ATV/Motorcycle -- Deep Discharge Lawn Tractor -- Don't know ??? I am trying to find the best power to weight ratio in my price range. A marine battery is the only one that is rated as deep-discharge (thicker plates) Car/motorcycle/lawn tractor batteries are most assuredly not deep discharge. -- Martin K. -- http://www.piclist.com PIC/SX FAQ & list archive View/change your membership options at http://mailman.mit.edu/mailman/listinfo/piclist |

Re: Deep Discharge Batteries ?Don't know how it works, but does the motor of the tracker drive off
it, or is it a fossil fuel engine and the battery is used to start it? Re: Deep Discharge Batteries ?The thicker the plates, the better. Actually "deep-discharge" is something
of a misnomer - Discharging a cell to say, 20% of capacity is just as harmful in a "deep-discharge" cell as an "Auto" cell - It just takes longer, and the deep-dischg cell will tolerate more deep cycles because the plates are thicker. Runners-up are "traction batteries", "marine batteries", "golf-cart batteries". You may not get what you pay for, but you surely won't get what you don't pay for - As someone mentioned, price is a good index. deep-discharge batteries are expensive. A good source for cheap lead-acid cells is medical equipment - Quality stuff, generally maintained on trickle-charge for their tour (usually two years), and then replaced. These can be in near-new condition, if you can get them before they've sat on some surplus dealer's shelf for years... -- http://www.piclist.com PIC/SX FAQ & list archive View/change your membership options at http://mailman.mit.edu/mailman/listinfo/piclist |

Re: Deep Discharge Batteries ?Not necessarily.
I might be mistaken, but iirc they use non-deepcharge batteries for starters because it can handle the large "current requests" better. If there is no such benefit over deep charge, I guess it's possible to be either, though more likely to be non-deepcharge since it would be less costly to ship with a manufacture.
