I have seen the pelicanhpc.org website and i have seen the news "i recently upgraded my research cluster to 32 node" i wonder how many gflop's it has created. and can be compare gflop to Ghz that we seen most of the processors. (intel quad core 3.2 ghz.) and what may be the gflop of a sing quad core processor?

The machines have dual quad core AMD opteron CPUs, running at 2.0 and 2.3 GHz (if I recall correctly). Two of them are Supermicros, and 2 are Sunfire 2200's. I haven't figured out the theoretical gflops it can do, but it shouldn't be too hard to calculate. I'm sure that AMD's web page must provide the information.

The Sunfires are super easy to rack mount, had them mounted and running PelicanHPC in about half an hour.

Do you use any special network cards or the in built motherboard network card?

I'm using the motherboard NICs. My work is CPU bound with relatively little internode communication, so I haven't worried about improvements along that line. Maybe I could get a small improvement from better communications, but I think that the effort and money required to go that route would not pay off for my research.

I think your videos are really cool! I very much enjoy seeing people getting some use out of PelicanHPC, and it seems that you are well on your way, using the cluster monitor and so forth. Getting a high score on the HPL benchmark is going to be just about impossible, I think, because it is quite sensitive to the bandwidth and latency of the network. A cluster like yours would work well for CPU bound tasks like Monte Carlo, though. You might look at the mc_example programs in Octave which are included on the PelicanHPC CD.

I don't have any photos of my cluster, it's just a boring, standard pile of 1U servers and a switch. I have made clusters like yours in the past, in a university computer room. Your videos are a pleasant reminder of that work.

Cheers, M.

Wow, Sudeep, those are cool videos!  All I have on youtube is an old interview with Grace Murray Hopper from 60 minutes I copied to DVD from an old VHS tape I made eons ago.  How did you make that video?  Did you use a camera phone?  I didn't hear any audio, was there supposed to be some?

Speaking of videos, Michael, I would love to see one of your workshops as a streaming video.  Watching you teach students about clusters and programming with octave would be very helpful!

This stuff is so cool, I put links to www.pelicanhpc.org and Sudeep's videos on my blog (listed below).

Thanks AJG. I have used a Digital cam to take the video. I have compressed to fit in you tube that is the reason why the video is very faded. There was no voice actually. Since you have asked it i will make a complete video on pelican clustering and upload it. Thanks for your advice. You can mail me at sudeepemails@gmail.com if you like discuss about clustering. since i am working out on clustering from few months it will be good if we have some discussions.

Oh, wow, thanx, that would be great.  My students and I are just starting to use pelicanHPC, so any input is most welcome!
