How much can we accomplish in eight hours? That depends on how productive we can be! So, how can we improve productivity!

Hi All,

I might be making and asking a very generic question  But yeah as it is applicable at all level so I put it in this way. So please shoot up your thoughts/suggestions to improve upon PRODUCTIVITY. As it is very important to have quality work in less time to run the successful business.

I will be really thankful if I get the proven ideas which you may have implemented already into your work environment. I am trying to implement practice/methodology which may help me in improve my and teams productivity.

Thanks in advance! I am sure I will get one of the best practice on this list!

Thanks,
Prashant

ELIMINATE WASTE - This is one practice which can improve productivity by
a big margin.

With Regards,

Mayank

There are no silver bullets.

The team has to take responsibility not only for delivering value and the
rate at which they do, but continuously improving.

The team should iteratively reflect on what is not working for them and
identify just a few things to do in order to address those problems during
the next iteration.  Then the team should reflect on whether these things
are working or if they should try some other things the following
iteration.  This iterative improvement process never ends, not just because
no team ever achieves perfection, but also because changes in project
context create new problems to address.

In light of continuous team self-improvement, researching what other teams
have found useful in addressing the specific issues the team identified each
iteration can certainly be helpful.  Researching what other teams do in
general is not so helpful because it loses focus on the current most
pressing issues and creates a silver-bullet expectation.

At the Agile 2009 conference, there was an interesting presentation on the Pomodoro techniques which employs segments of highly-concentrated time, having a positive productivity impact.  You can check it out at www.pomodorotechnique.com

Don't focus on productivity or speed. Focus on producing the best quality
software that you possibly can. That's the number one thing you can do to be
highly productive over the long term. You need to establish a culture
focused on doing your best work, and the team needs to internalize the right
values.

We did this on my previous team. It took maybe a year to get very
productive. We took lots of time to master TDD, ATDD, understanding the
business and working well with customers to know the functionality to
deliver, our architecture, our CI, refactoring, managing technical debt, all
aspects of our process. As the years went by, we continued to become more
and more productive, delighting our customers in the process. My new team is
following this same path, though it is going faster as most of the team is
already experienced in agile practices.

If you focus on productivity, you're going to start cutting corners, doing
hacks, burdening yourself with ever-increasing technical debt, and you will
have the opposite effect.

I agree wholeheartedly.

"We value working software over comprehensive documentation."

Focus on *customer value*, rather than "productivity". How little process can we get away with?

We can increase our "productivity" in creating unnecessary documentation without increasing value. This is the death trap of most productivity improvement efforts.

I must re-emphasize that it is the team as a whole who should be identifying
waste and finding ways to eliminate it, and doing it one step at a time
monitoring all feedback as to the impact and effectiveness of these
measures.  Of course, each team member can help, but the team must own the
responsibility and decisions, not the individuals.

Agile is largely a reaction to how counterproductive big plans and big steps
have proven to be at one end of the spectrum (and ad-hoc loose cannons at
the other end).  We should also be agile (collaborative, iterative, and
feedback-driven) in how we go about improving our processes.

Absolutely.

I would also add people and product to the list.

At it's core, agile development is driven by incremental improvements to the product, process, and people.
