How to link places, Groups etc in GRAMPS

I have built several websites using GRAMPS, which I, along with my cousin, selected to replace another GEDCOM-based family tree solution.

GRAMPS offered us a lot more latitude in adding data and data types, especially photos, scanned documents and historical documents.

The graphic capabilities alone clinched our decision to migrate.

But now I have run into a problem with one of our GRAMPS sites.

Many of the individuals served in specific armed corps, i.e., the Canadian Navy, the Royal Canadian Airforce, the British Air Force, the American Army - we used the PLACE attribute to define the corps, and linked the individual to the Corp via an EVENT, defined as MILITARY SERVICE. We added, where available, a note linked to the event with details of the individual's service.

Now what we want to do is to link the individual to the boat, platoon or battle, ie.

How can we define the HMS Whatever as a PLACE, link the individual to the PLACE, and link the boat (PLACE) to the Canadian Navy (PLACE) - in this way, we can see all the individuals in our database, who served in the Canadian Navy, and also see the subgroup who served on the HMS Whatever?

How can we define the Company A as a PLACE, link the individual to the PLACE, and link Company A (PLACE) to the US Army (PLACE) - in this way, we can see all the individuals in our database, who served in Company A, and also see the subgroup who served in the US Army?

My limited capabilities with GRAMPS leaves me, rather than a hierarchical set of relationships, with multiple entries - an individual with an EVENT for Company, an EVENT for Corps, and event for Boat, and no relationship between these EVENTs.

Has someone tackled this before?

Does someone have any suggestions as to how best to build these hierarchical relationships, and display them in the Web Report?

Many thanks for your feedback and guidance,

StevenB

Normally you have linkage like this:

Person -- Event -- Place

That is, a person experienced some event at some place.  In your case,
the event is Military Service.  In the event attributes and/or notes,
you can put information on the ship.  Notes could be a good choice for
your application since they can be shared.  So, you could compose a
note, or series of notes, about the ships and navies involved, and
link those notes to the Military Service events.

What should you use for Place?  If it were me, I'd put the home port
of the ship or the sailor's corps, which would likely be a naval base
somewhere in the world.  I would not make the ship itself (or the
navy) a place.  You can see from the dialog that Place is generally
used to describe a specific location in the world.

Use a military service event.  You can put the service, company and
corps in the description.

For the navy, you could combine the ship name and home port as a place.
For example:

Street:  HMS Whatever
City:  Portsmouth
County: Hampshire
Country:  England

If they were involved in a particular battle you could create another
event and another place (the physical location of the battle) to
describe it.

Gerald's suggestion of creating a "Ship" attribute for the event is also
a good one.

Use notes to record the detail.

Regards,

Nick.

Remember the heated discussion about whether they should be shareable?
I've found this a useful enhancement since it was done. I guess this
is another example of that.

I'll put in my 5 cents too.

If you make an event: 'Military service on HMS Victoria campaign
2001', connected to the port of origin, then you can share this event
among all people who served there.

So if you want to know who served in the 'Royal Canadian Airforce',
you would list all people connected to the event "military service
royal canadian airforce', and in the eventref put the source of this
one person.
If you need to know who was on a ship, you need to list the people
connected to the event 'Military service on HMS Victoria campaign
2001''

I expect your question comes from the fact that in a website we do not
list events, only people connected to places (eg see
http://library.gramps-project.org/users/charette/plc/a/a/aa946ce048763819255.html
)

So you would need to extend the website output, to generate a page for
specific event types. This would be usefull addition to GRAMPS. So you
would then have page listing all events of type eg "Military Service",
and on click, obtain details of this event, so all people who share
this event, and where this event took place (usefull for a battle).

Yes, quite some work, but some people could help to set this up. I
would not misuse the PLACE structure due to the fact the website look
is what you want, instead enter the correct data in GRAMPS, and work
together to have the report changed to your liking.
